A lot of good info. I mentioned to you in a past video about the large produce auctions we have up here in PA, and our thoughts about selling produce at them because of the prices they command sometimes. You mentioned in your video about being first to market with certain products, tomato's for example, and that is where the auctions hurt us. People go down to the auction and buy produce that was brought in from growers down south, thus being able to bring things to market first. Not that I have an issue with farmers buying and reselling fruits and veggies, but 95% of the ones that I know do that up here falsely misrepresent these products as their own. To me, part of buying from a small farm is knowing who and how your food was grown, and buying from an auction, you have no idea how the food was grown lol
I should make a video about their topic!
@@farmerdre1 Yes, I think that would make a very good video :)
Very educational and forthright video!! Really enjoyed the video. Thanks. Good for everyone to see both sides of the sale!!
Awesome! Thanks for Watching!
@4:01 maybe not for an apple, but for leafy greens, the nutrients break down much faster and there really is a significant nutritional benefit when eating a fresher product.
but you're right: the biggest value farmer's market customers gain is being able to talk with the person that grows their food; it somehow tastes better knowing how it was grown and who the person is that cultivated it. farmer Dre's apples.. that's something special there
note: i like your honest & open attitude. you're a likable guy. that prolly helps w/ yours sales
Awesome content Farmer Dre. Starting ground work for strawberry tunnels in ireland, love the info!
I would love to know more about hign tunnel strawberries!
Very educational!
Thanks!
Great information and you are very correct about grocery store apple cider. That stuff is not even drinkable.
👍😂😂😂
"...You absolutely can find 'Product-X' at the grocery store at a lower price, possibly shipped over a month ago from somewhere out of the country in a cargo container on a slow boat, then stored for days or weeks in a wholesaler's warehouse, then trucked hundreds or thousands of miles to finally end up on your grocery store shelf -- BUT -- you sure won't find it *this* good & fresh at the grocery store. That's the difference we bring..."
Yes! I appreciate you Watching
farmer DRE, have you ever done comeback coupons? Like 10 percent off your next order if you return within 7 days?
that's a good strategy though

Dang y'all are getting way better prices for strawberries. the you pick near us sells for $1.50 per pound we started at $2.5 per pound and still get lots of complants so went down to $2 this year may go back to $2.50 again for this spring. For prepicked berries we get $5 quart and $18 a gallon.
Just to let you know, I stopped by because The Veggie Boys ask us all to ck you out. I just subscribed and will be watching. Have a nice safe day and thanks for sharing!! PS: I just shared this on my Facebook also. ;) Hope this helps you out.

I’ve been learning to run our business since 1997 Regardless the price anyone else sells a product , the first thing you need to know is , how much money you will spend to operate , even better if you know what each type of product costs you. Then you can set a sell price.
Yes! Thanks for Watching
The only grocery store that I can get fresh apples at is a regional chain that gets theirs from the local growers. That's mostly because it's predominantly apple country so it would be stupid to ship any in.

I'm glad you can get what you do, but it won't fly around here. We are lucky to get dollar to a little over a dollar a pound for tomatoes. Selling out of the quart containers with 6 tomatoes, getting $5 is good but most charge $4. I think it's because more people grow their own or know someone who grows them and will give them some in my area.
💪🏼 Good video 🇺🇸
All good stuff hope veggie boys help you get to the 10k always watched you both 👍 cheers 🍻
Yes! Thanks for Watching
We sell at farmers markets and other vendors come over and check out our prices and then go and price themselves at a dollar less per pound. Pretty frustrating. They don't realize that they are only shooting themselves in the foot.
It happens to me all the time! But they dont realize that is we both sell 100 lbs of tomatoes. You will make $100-150 more then them!

2/25/22 I own a restaurant, but also grow my own vegetables. My delivered price for grape tomatoes is $2.41/#
cherry is 6/quarts for $24.09
10# of 5x6 for $18.40
10# green tomatillo for $18.80
25# yellwo $48.52
25# roma 25.05 or the number 2 romas are $14.98
what all these have in common is that they have NO flavor. It is worth paying extra for a flavorful tomato!!!
if you can't grow it yourself, go to a farmers market, even those "on the vine" tomatoes at the grocery store are picked green, packaged, shipped thousands of miles then exposed to ethylene gas to get them to turn red, then shipped and sold to you, NO FLAVOR at all.

Is it possible to make it from just selling at a farmers market?
Absolutely. Its more than half our farm income

Farmers markets used to be a place where a person could afford to buy some fresh items. Not anymore, now it is nothing more than profit profit profit.

Strawberries here are $4-$6 CDN no one would ever pay $8-$10 USD, they would literally sit on shelves and rot, i see that when they sell them for $6.99. U-Picks are typically $2.50-$3.50 a quart.
As he said, it depends on where you are at.
@@shanelamell2229 And i'm just saying no one would pay that here.
@turbomasterful, if you could taste the difference between store bought strawberries and real USA farm strawberries, you would pay the difference in $$. US soil grows great fruits and produce. Have you ever had a real Jersey (New Jersey) tomato? They are unbelievable.
@@Naplesfrank154 I live in Canada, My local store sells local farm fresh strawberries in the summer time as well as a few different vendors set up around town with all farm fresh veggies. Can't beat farm fresh. I also grow my own veggies just for myself and family. I do however sell some preserves.
$4.00 a pound number ones tomatoes $3.50 For number twos
That's a good price!

I've never raised my prices in 19 years! If anything, the cost of doing business has gone down with innovation and everything has paid for itself several times over. Plus my kids are older and can do quite a lot of labor now.
However, we are willing to do a hell of a lot less for our customers. Once we grew out of the farmers market circuit, we were mostly taking it right to their door. We won't do that anymore, come pick it up, organize one person to go pick up several orders for an area. That's it.
We want all people to have access to good "real" food! In Jan we're starting a rewards program. 10% of current purchase goes towards a future purchase if your year to date amount spent is $249 or less. Once you hit $500, it goes to 20%. $750=30%, and $1000=40%. And we double your food stamps if you have a government card.

I know farm fresh is best. I don't drink cider and have no idea what it sells for anywhere but do know I won't pay $7 a gallon for anything I drink. You have to be careful about talking bad about the stores. They're selling your product too even if your product is superior.
