Moro Reflex - Everything You Need To Know - Dr. Nabil Ebraheim

- Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes Moro Reflex in infants.
The Moro reflex is an infantile reflex that is normally present in all newborns or infants. The Moro reflex is normally seen at birth and it is an involuntary response to stimulation. This reflex is present up to 4-5 months of age as a response to a sudden loss of support. The infant feels as if it is falling. The doctor will check for this reflex after birth and during well-child visits. The Moro reflex evaluates the integration of the central nervous system.
How does the reflex work?
The head is gently lifted with enough support to begin to move the body weight of the infant from the examination table. Support of the infant is then released suddenly, allowing the infant ti fall backward for a moment, but then quickly supported again. The normal response for the infant is to have a startled look. As the reflex ends, the infants draws its arms back to the body and then relaxes.
The absence of the Moro reflex in infants is abnormal. If the reflex is absent or abnormal, tests may be needed to examine the child’s muscles. These tests may include shoulder x-rays or test for disorders associated with a brachial plexus injury. Absence on both sides suggests damage to the brain or spinal cord. Absence on only one side suggests either a broken shoulder bone or an injury to the brachial plexus. Infants that are born vaginally with forceps may not move correctly and suffer an injury to the upper extremity (brachial plexus injury). Palpation of the shoulder may cause the infant to cry. The infant may have an associated clavicle fracture.
The Moro reflex involves three distinct components:
1-Spreading out of the arms (Abduction)
2-Unspreading the arms (Adduction)
3-Crying (usually)
An intact Moro reflex signals that the infant does not have a true brachial plexus injury.
Differential diagnosis of brachial plexus injury on newborns:
1-Clavicle fracture with pseudoparalysis (most common): isolated clavicle fracture is most common. Infants with pseudoparalysis from a fractured clavicle usually have an intact Moro reflex. Most infants recover in 7-10 days from pseudoparalysis. The patient should be followed up for clavicle fracture and for observation of pseudoparalysis. The condition is easily distinguished from a brachial plexus injury because infants with isolated clavicle fractures have an intact Moro reflex. Clavicle fractures occur in association with a brachial plexus injury in approximately 10-15% of patients.
2-Proximal humerus epiphyseal separation
3-Posterior shoulder dislocation.
Persistence of the Moro reflex beyond 4-5 months of age occurs in severe neurological problems. Persistence of the Moro reflex beyond 24 months of age indicates a poor prognosis for independent ambulation, especially if sitting balance is not achieved by two years of age.

Sir but plz also tell why moros reflex happens and why it will disappear at 6 months ??
My teacher has asked me in Viva and I don't have answer
Infants can support their head from 4 months of age and once they can support their head,Moro's reflex starts to diminish.
Last night my son was doing this when I put him down also he was just on his changing table and did it after I changed his diaper he usually doesn’t do it for as long as he did which led me to research and discovered this video

My baby is 3 days old and I feel like I’m failing her. She jumps when sleep. I think because I let people be loud around her while she is trying to sleep. Now she does this every time she is asleep. It’s like she is having nightmares about loud noises. Makes me sad and I have postpartum depression all over again, and I start to cry. But I’ll wait and see if it goes away.
I know exactly what you mean 😞 My baby is 9 days old and he is doing the same thing. It breaks my heart and I dunno how to help him cos feeding definitely doesn't help. Swaddling does help a little though maybe you should also try that. I searched on UA-cam and came across this video and I must say it gives me great comfort to know it is part of nature. It doesn't make me feel any less sad though 😞

Unfortunately it doesn't really sooth mine, since it is awefully similar to infantile spasms ☹️
@@nisa3612 true, but one is inspired by an actual test. The other occurs naturally without handling or positioning the infant.
@@missryanswers I know, thing is, my LO did this in his sleep even without any noise, and he's waking up in following 5 minutes or so. But several of my friends also experience this and it's actually nothing, I'm definitely going to check it with pediatrician, hopefully it IS nothing.
@@nisa3612 Very responsible actions for any concerns about your child. What isn't healthy is a parent who worries about everything and every development stage that occurs precisely within the time AVERAGE time frame, parent(s) who worry because their infant twitches, parents who worry because their infant doesn't twitch. Actually the lack of movement is of great concern. Babies are born twitchy. I'm certain you realize babies have a long development period of figuring out the mechanics of all of their muscle motions from head to tippy toes. When a baby freezes for several seconds staring into space in a fixed way... is typically a seizure. THAT is worrisome and deserves an instant call to the pediatrician or urgent care visit depending on the length of time it lasted or if it has happened before or regularly. Babies dream and startle IN their dreams and will do that reflex. Sort of like dogs running in their dreams. All normal. I've worked with living babies, babies being taken off life support, and babies that have passed. Normal twitching and occasional startles in early life are good to see, compared to the other options. Ironically, this "over worry" capacity I've seen in the equestrian world as well. Some owners call the vet because their horse isn't as happy one day to the next. And then when the vet arrives, they ask a million questions, they nearly cry, or do cry, they keep the vet there 40 minutes longer than needed to due to their unending worries and a captive vet. They pay for his time, so that is their option. But to other owners who have invested time to know horse illness and wellness symptoms and typical horse behavior worry very little. Parenting is the same way. If you are with your first baby, your worries are going to by on the high end of the meter if you are a worrier. Do know your baby's habbits. If they change, be concerned. Do know what the average side of "normal" is, then relax knowing you have the knowledge needed to not harm your child. Knowledge is power and the key to kill worry in about anything you pursue in life.

Please sir my son will be two years by September, and hasn’t started sitting he use to also have that frightens, I have been to the hospital but am not getting any results, what will I do
I am not a doctor, but if your child seems developmentally delayed and you mentioned your child having a history of this movement, have them tested for infantile seizures or spasms, immediately!
There are different kinds but is basically a form of epilepsy that affects the entire body & needs to be treated right away.
The brain waves need to be measured during a seizure episode for an accurate diagnosis.
There are medications that can help.
Please do not delay and I pray your child is found to be happy and healthy. 🙏

My grandson used to do this frequently. Without the drop maneuver. We would be holding him, and his arms would just fling out to the side, like he thought we would drop him. He outgrew it, but later on had issues around ADHD/Autism (not sure what the final diagnosis was) Wondering if the random startle was an early sign of a differently wired brain?
Not sure what happened to my usename? Should I change my channel name to match?

I wouldn't recommend it but I realised he could sleep well on his stomach but I had to get supervision from a doctor. Got him a firm mattress, made sure that there were no pillows/toys basically anything that could hinder his breathing and lastly made frequent check ups until I was sure he got used to it. It lasted until around the 6month mark when he gradually stopped the reflex.

Nice video
Good morning dear,
This video very wonderful In deed i should say very informative for everyone not only parents.
I should like to add few things for you all , whenever we hold a child never push their should up because you will be moving their shoulder joints which can cause a child sleeping disorder, due to infant joint are very delicate.
Little note: Always do oil massage for your child before taking bath of him because my mother used to do this for us sisters.
Reason is to nourish our skin and make us have good blood circulation, after drink milk , i used go back to sleep , so my advise please do same for your child , stay healthy .
Not to use grease oil, my mummy used baby oil on us those days.
Have a wonderful days , stay healthy all of you.
God bless you.
Best regards
Sarjit

Is it necessary to scan all babies born for this? I would not like a doctor to startle my newborn baby like that. Are there other symptoms of brachial plexus injury in infants?
What a baby goes through when they're being birthed is much more startling to them!!
You should want a doctor to check your kid's reflexes.
