Converting My Wooden Bike into an E-bike

  • About four years ago I built a wooden bike and it's been working great! I decided to see if I could convert my wooden bike in to an Ebike using a front hub motor conversion kit I bought online.
My kit came with a 350watt front hub motor which hopefully is just enough to help me up the hills and won't put too much stress on the frame. I haven't cycled very far on it yet but so far I've been impressed with how well it works.

Sad to hear you have chronic fatigue. Well done on the upgrade. Would have been great to see your legs out either side of the bike as the motor and battery got you up that hill, but assume this current model only provides assistance? All the best. Thanks for the video. Cheers, David

Haha yeah it did come with a throttle, but I decided not to use it because I wasn’t sure about exerting that sort of force on the front of the frame without pedalling supporting it. But also I don’t think the 350watt motor would be powerful enough to get me up that hill alone! When I’ve been having good-ish periods I’ve been able to cycle 5km on my normal bike so hopefully the motor will help equal out the hills a bit and get me further! I struggled up that hill a few weeks back on a regular bike but was up and down it a few times filming this no problem!

Interesting thanks. I wondered if you have found online the Beach Racer (?) bikes by a bloke over in San Francisco? In wood of course very flowing curves as I recall. Also the recumbent bikes? The AtomicZombie diy recumbent bike site? Compliments on your large workshop! Laurie. Tokoroa NZ. 😊

David, I used to go on 22 mph average bike rides, same problem with chronic fatigue. Double vaxxed with Pfizer, also had COVID twice, biggest regret was moving to a blue state where they restricted everything and threatened the job....
    Hope you are feeling better

Ah so sorry to hear that! I wouldn’t wish it on anyone but hopefully so many people dealing with long covid more research gets done into treatment!

Thanks! I haven’t been able to take this out much but I just moved house and there’s some lovely quiet roads nearby!

I think so! I haven’t been able to cycle much further than up that hill and back a few times thanks to rain/sickness but definitely seems to make it lots easier up the hills which was my goal

Could give us the link to the conversion kit?
    Great project 😀

Unfortunately I bought my kit from a New Zealand based company as none of the international e-bike conversion kit suppliers would ship to me. But it seems to be a generic kit like you’d get from AliExpress or Amazon etc
