Abandoned Neighborhood 'part 2'

  • Almost exactly a year late I return to have another look at the ‘abandoned neighborhood’.
Since my last video, a great deal of vandalism and theft of building materials has rendered many of these homes in grave condition and needing total demolition.
Some of the homes, maybe about half, can possibly be brought up to code, but I have my doubts. There really isn’t any significant historical value to this small development of homes, so I’m relatively certain that they will rebuild this entire neighborhood sooner or later.
*Beware: the state and local police have SIGNIFICANTLY stepped up patrols in the area, presumably a result of the rash of vandalism there and in other areas surrounding the complex. I was followed out by the state police who made absolutely certain I was leaving the area.
    Don’t go!*

Went there a few months ago. All the windows to every house are boarded up. This video makes the neighborhood feel more alive but walking through it in real life, it feels totally dead. My friends and I brought some life back to it when we found a ball in one of the garages and played kickball in the middle field area.

I agree with you. Too much homeless panhandling vets not enough federal housing for them. But we can house other people from other country's for for free. Its a big kick in the pants. Not only this. All the the Ex cons can get social security. While the disabled that worked have to jump threw loops of paper work to get back what they worked in to. The system needs some revamping

If there are any homeless vets on this thread they can receive housing assistance by dailing 211, press 3 and follow the prompts. Hopefully the land is put to good use, it all depends on the ownership.

I'm sure homeless people would be squatting there if it appealed to them, but there's a reason they aren't. You can't put homeless or disabled people out in the countryside with no amenities. Even if you turned on their water and electricity, you'd need to give them a car (assuming they are able to drive, which they probably can't which is part of why they're homeless), or check up on them periodically, and deliver food and supplies. That's why homeless people tend to congregate in cities. Even if they're on the street, they can get access to food, some basic community of other homeless, jobs, and drugs without needing a car. Shelter is important too, but not if it means starving or being completely alone.

Found online...This place is completely closed off to the public and has no car access, which is why most people don't know it's there. But it used to be residences for the staff of the Southbury Training School, a school for people with disabilities. To this day, the roads are maintained, the lawns mowed, and the hydrants freshly painted, in spite of the lack of residents, and it doesn't help that it's part of a 1,600 acre campus.

Crazy to read that last comment in the description. To imagine cops having to significantly step up their resources in order to protect a completely abandoned neighborhood. This is certainly a great use of time, money, and energy.

This doesn't make sense. What town is this? Was it possibly bought out by the state of CT by eminent domain? Possibly for a highway? A whole neighborhood does not lose their job and move. It looks like either a developer bought every homeowner out, there was a toxic spill and no clean water or the State bought them out for other plans. It is very, very disturbing for the reasons already stated. Possibly also was a part of one of the closed down CT mental health facilities (sadly, thanks Reagan). There are people (of course especially our vets) that would love to live there. The land is beautiful. The houses at this point would be gutted and rebuilt. But, of course, how in the world would CT "afford" anything like that. Oh ya, the casinos were going to save us.

Pulling the siding off and ripping the copper tubing out is common practice in the older cities hit hard by the Recession. Not just abandoned places. I know one guy who pulled the aluminum siding off a 2 family he inherited. Drugs and foreclosures.

I think this was the cash cow. They were maintaining all those lawns and getting paid. Once your first video hit, accountability stepped in. If the siding was removed, was the copper wire and plumbing removed too? Maybe the fire dept is going to use them homes as practice homes. If the street lights are on at night, that might answer other questions. An up date would be awesome to see

I had no idea Connecticut was so green. In California we never see such lushness. I recall taking a cross-country bus trip with my best friend at the age of 19 and being astounded at how green and full of life most of the rest of the country was. Born and raised in the SF Bay Area, I was astonished that the whole country wasn't packed full of people the way the Bay Area was, and that most of the country didn't have people all over the place. What I learned in high school was so wrong, in our country anyway, not India, say, that the world was so solidly packed with people we would all starve. And most of the USA is beautiful and nice and green once you get past Utah. (in a straight line, I mean).

Well, this is the Personnel Village where staff of the Southbury Training School lived and raised their families. It's a tiny part of a 650 acre campus that was shut down. See my post above. This video caused such a crazy ruckus. It had nothing to do with mortgage crisis. It was about the dramatic changes in mental health care and the shift from institution for mentally disabled to group home settings on case by case bases. They DO care about the STS as it was put on the Senate floor as a bill in 2015 to close permanently but no plans were made to reourpise it. It was about money. The state has huge budget problems and was cuting social services. This campus was the lifeblood of the entire town for 40+ years. It's not about this little village of 25 houses. It's about the whole campus where those people worked and it being closed down. That housing was provided to them as employees. Children were raised there.

Y'all can keep CT for what you pay for taxes in year you can buy a decent used car. May be a brand new Kia

Daniel Grace you are up on these posts like you know something aren’t you! Well let me “school” you, since you swear you know so much but look like you don’t know ish!
Fact: SOME of CT has high taxes
ALSO fact: SOME of CT has LOW PURCHASE PRICE.
Incase you don’t own a house, low purchase price + high taxes is the same mortgage as high purchase price and low taxes! Some people prefer to pay their taxes twice a year, me, I get mine rolled into my EXTREMELY LOW 1.2%APR home in a quiet Rural town, square footage of 3,100, 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, 2 car garage..... purchase price of my home was $156,000. I pay a mortgage monthly of $567, plus my taxes are $612. My total monthly cost is $1,179- which is about what I was paying out of Connecticut to rent a 2 bedroom apartment. My children also go to one of the best schools in the East Coast for free, and my town has one of the lowest crime rates in our country. So.... pretty sure CONNECTICUT is the shit and I’m staying.
So, if you can buy a brand new Kia for $5,000 a year, then you a bad mama jama!!!!
I hope we all learned just because you wear a suit doesn’t mean you know shit.
      Be blessed.

Stop and Think a minute, not only are you trespassing on State owned property you made 2 video's and posted them for all to see.
This facility is slowly shutting down and like all the other state training schools it is falling into disrepair.
I do agree that it is a shame that this has happened, but is it worth a charge for trespassing?
