Oh heck yeah!
Your jig was brilliant! A bit off topic but have you made any cannons in your career. The trunions made me think of it. 😁🤙
great view at the end spinning camera .. can the factory where you get the honing stones ,, re stone the brackets ?? or are they a 1 time use ..
After reading this back to myself, I must issue this PSA... For Curtis' eyes only, or anyone who's as broken and warped as me lol.
You could hone one big assed engine with that sucker.... Although it doesn't really suck anything does it? It more resembles a f machine kinda action... Or with all the thrusting and twisting motions I'm picturing more of a giant fisting machine... Omg that's a bit disturbing isn't it, and brutal lmao. I'm a little worried how my mind works sometimes lol.
On a more wholesome note the spin cam was a bit of fun chaos... and my brain just now visualised those 2 things happening at the same time... I am right to be concerned, aren't I?
Excellent results with the new hone Loving the cross hash marks 👊🏼….come on part 3
The best thing about this video is seeing Kurtis' obvious pride and joy in owning and operating such an interesting and cool machine. Very nice.

Kurtis really is the embodiement of "work smarter, not harder". The jig for the standoffs and using a rod for hand support to weld them in one go was quite genious! 😲😎🤟
I was wondering what the rod was for, thanks!
Mate, with all these tools, jigs and gizmos, you're better set up for production than most factories that crank these things out. Awesome job!
That is also my opinion!
Just to present another viewpoint... in 'production' there would be dedicated setups for repeated manufacturing operations. Kurtis's shop is not equipped that way because he has a large range of parts to make or restore, and they all come in as one-offs. Aside from his shop aid tooling it is not equipped as a production shop, but he is extremely well equipped for the one-offs that make up his bread and butter.
@@eldorado96 this is true. I'm a machinist at a company that exclusively builds hydraulic cylinders. We have all sorts of specialized jigs and fixtures for the things that we produce.
Not really, the equipment used for manufacturing is very different from what is used for this kind of work. This kind of equipment is used for one offs and specialized jobs.
He's better Because he does Not do Production. He's "Specialized" in everything and nothing particular.
Hey Kurtis, it's always nice to watch a man work who really knows what he's doing. I have a friend who's a Fitting and Machining trade teacher, I'm recommending he uses your channel content as a teaching aid, top work mate 👍.

Absolute genius that he took the time to make a jig to weld pieces on. Very few guys can come close to what he can repair or fabricate. Get a kick seeing his dog chewing up his toys.
Hey mate thanks for watching we appreciate it! 👍😊
One of the first times i've seen him actually supporting one end of the object while lifting/transporting it. Always been so fascinated by his (possibly edited) feel for the mass midpoint of a cylinder. Awesome vid as always.
Yeah, I doubt we always see the first lift.
@@SocialMoron as a carpenter i can tell you than likelly we see first ones. After some time you just feel your material...
@@boobrowsky Kurtis is a master, no doubt. If we're seeing first lifts of the the odd-shaped jobs, he's a grand master -- and I don't doubt he is.
It’s his superpower😅😅
The fixture for the stand-offs is THE clue to this project !! Nice job Karen & Kurtis.
I found that to be genius!
We saw how easy it was to place the new parts, but the other genius part is how easy it was for him to make the jig. He ran bolts through tabs on the original and just cut flat stock to join all the points. The only critical part was to ensure the jig wouldn't flex too much. If he builds more of the same cylinders later, the payoff will be huge. It goes to show that sometimes the best solutions are the simplest ones. The guide to weld the standoffs was also very smart. It takes some skill to be smooth while changing direction in welding, but he is great at it and running spray arc makes it look like it could have been done by a robot in the factory.
I never really had an interest in machining or welding but I find this compulsive viewing. You explain everything so well and your expertise in your profession is on another level. Along with the brilliant video work this is a great start to my Fridays. Thank you
Well said. I find machining fascinating, but I know nothing about it. Generally, I feel like I know what's going on due to spot-on explanations, but most of the time I can't guess what'll happen next. Then it just comes together. I think the kids call it "satisfying". Perfect viewing during a pandemic!
Why we all watch!!!!
I just want to see the dogs adventures really, the machining/welding/new equipment is just a bonus.
There sure is a lot of work making that barrel. No doubt it's worth a small fortune when it's finished, but still a lot cheaper than the large fortune that a new barrel would cost. With making and repairing all these big parts, it shows why you need all the big equipment. Very interesting videos that you post each week.
Brings back memories of my almost 20 years in the automotive engine rebuilding industry. Sunnen was the absolute tops in honing. I could smell the honing oil, as I watched. Thanks!

Oh gees I hope not Micheal. The dying breed bit I mean.
@@gardengnome3249 I wish it weren't the case, but with each succeeding generation of machinists, there are fewer and fewer who have, or even want to learn, the skills to do this kind of work. More and more automation and less manual skills, whether it be using the machines, doing the layout work to set, adjust, and calculate dimensions, appropriate materials for the part being fabricated, and so on. A hundred years ago, machinists could do mathematics in their head, or they figured it out on paper, having to do the calculations themselves, instead of having a computer do all of it. I love technology, but if we were have a situation where all of our electronics were rendered useless, we would need people with those skills to keep things moving. And currently, there just aren't enough of them.

I am constantly amazed at the accurate results that can be achieved by honing such a long bore with stones that wear at unknown rates. With a carbide tool the size pretty much stays at a known size whereas stones are steadily wearing down. When using a manual style honing machine to hog out 1 mm (~.040 inch) there is even more of a chance that the bore ends up wavy. These CNC honing machines have changed the game!

Hey Paul we are impressed with the new hone, it's a lot quieter and more efficient than the vintage vertical hone. Karen will try and show a shot of the filter in Part 3 video and she's hoping George comes back with a little family! Have a good weekend, cheers
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Here is a crazy idea: Collect the sludge, clean it up with a suitable solvent, magnetically separate out the steel content and sell the resulting steel powder 🤔 (Told you it was a crazy idea 😅)
Can't wait for part 3. Great videos thank you both for your hard work.
Thanks for watching!
You are doing an awesome job of showing how to and what for. Thank you so much for the education.

I’ve been hanging to see the new hone in action !
Every Friday I sit down with my CCE mug with Jack Daniela and coke, and watch with my daughter, she just turned 1
She is almost as fascinated with your weekly video as I am !

I hope you guys enjoy doing these videos as much as all of us enjoy watching them. I got to visit Sunnen Canada back in the 80s. They were and are still are state of the art equipment manufacturers.
Outstanding filming and editing as usual. Another great example of the precision and top quality work/product CEE delivers. Love your boots Karen! (stepping on the crunchy bits)
Well, I’m so excited about finally going home to my native country so that my 3-year old can finally meet her paternal grandparents that I couldn’t sleep so I stayed up to see the brand new Sunnen in action! Totally worth it. Great episode as always and congrats again on the new machine. You deserve it for all your hard work.
P.S. since I subscribed you’ve gained like 50K subscribers. Glad to see the channel is also growing.
Hey mate that's real exciting, safe travels and enjoy the visit home!
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Thanks for the kind words. Looking forward to the next episode already!
