Rory is in the "your favorite guitarist's favorite guitarist" category. Always thrilled to see him get his recognition.
Best guitarist in the world
Agreed
Who's to argue with Jimi?
To witness Rory you have to see a better live version of this song, like the Montreux live one.If you want to be blown away I perrsonally recommend "Do You Read Me" live at the Rock goes to College series in 1979, it's mind-blowing. Nobody can touch him 'till this day. He's on another level than everybody else. His tone, the playing and his connection with his guitar are overwhelming. And he never played the same song the same way twice! I've seen a lot of versions of his songs and every time he changes the solo, the pacing, it's just makes it a new song. Even Ritchie Blackmore said he's the most natural talented player he's ever seen. And he should know, Rainbow and Rory toured together. Truly the greatest of all time, hands down.Start listening to him, you won't feel sorry.
Agreed
Shinkicker always blows me away!
The live version of Follow Me on Stage Struck/Live in Europe has some of the best guitar work from anyone!
I always loved Rory’s vocals. He was the distinctive backdrop to my youth. I remember when he played in Taste as a teenager. I was 15, he was probably about 19. Rory was just absolutely spectacular.
Saw him live at Preston Guildhall in 80s ,he had to be seen live ,Rory's joy and enthusiasm on stage was infectious, mesmerising player.
Rory Gallagher……worshipped by most of the best players ..as one of the original icons of guitar!
Joe Satriani, Brian May, Alex Lifeson, Toni Iommi, John Petrucci, Neal Morse, etc…all look up to him!
I saw Rory live about 13 or 14 times from 1976 onwards, absolutely awesome guitar player and as you say revered by many of the top guitar players, died far too soon.
So great that reaction channels like this one are helping bring Rory to a new generation. The first time I heard him I said "who is this guy and how is it possible I had never heard of him before?"
Perhaps you might check out Rory On the BBC ‘Old Grey whistle Test’. I particularly like the version of Bo Carter’s ‘All Around Man’.
Check out "A million miles away" from "Irish Tour 74"
I don't think this was one of Rory's best performances. You'd have been better listening to A Million Miles Away or Walk on Hot Coals.
2022 and people discover now the greatest white man who played the greatest blues rock in 70s!!Legend!!Forget about the overrated famous others English guitarists of 70s!Rory is the man!You should do A Million miles Away and Who s that coming!
Rory was the greatest of them all.best looking one as well
Best rock artist ever!
I'm guessing your Greek? IV noticed our Rory has a massive following over there
Love❤❤🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷 from Greece🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷❤❤
Love to see Just Hit Town by Rory and any early Chicago! Thank you.
Greatest Irish guitarist in the world
A cool reaction video, it just doesn't get any better than Rory Gallagher.
RIP Rory Gallagher saw him open up for Rush Irish Legend he is a Bad MF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely the best. Peerless!
Rory wasn't only our greatest guitarist here in Ireland, but I'd state that he was the greatest guitarist in the world. When you have the likes of Clapton and Hendrix saying he was the best, then you know how serious a player Rory actually was.
Nice reaction , but not Rory's best performance. Please delve deeper into his catalog and let more folks experience the genius of this master musician. Rory played amazing slide guitar ( Bullfrog Blues), acoustic (Pistol Slapper Blues), mandolin ( Goin to My Hometown), harmonica and sax. He was on the short list to replace Mick Taylor in the Rolling Stones, blew away most of the acts at the Isle of Wight in 1970 (including Hendrix) with 7 encores with his band Taste, and is quoted by Slash, Brian May, Alex Lifeson and others as their major influence. Clapton said Rory was the one who got him back into the Blues. Sadly, he never attained the recognition in the States he deserved but he never compromised his vision for fame. And Rory's voice is best heard singing the blues.
Irish and proud of Rory we have a statue of him in Ireland 🇮🇪
Thats not one of the best Shadow Play try;
Rock Goes To Collage version is best solo
Montreux version highest energy
Belfast version best crowd
Lorient version most emotional
Agree, good descriptions!
I'm still waiting for that day when someone will react to rock goes to college version.
You need to delve deeper guys, Rory actually had an amazing voice!
Most guitarists (even the very good ones) play like they are driving a car. Rory played like riding a motorcycle, all feel and nuance. It's very rare to hear two renditions of the same tune that are similar.
He had is deamons and was a heavy drinker which contributed to his death.
But as a natural player of different styles IMO he has no peer.
Brilliant player listen to top priority album unbelievable
There are also incidences where rock lyrics are nothing more than words that rhyme.
Shin kicker
I believe he is! Very, very unique! Very, very energenic! His enthusiasm puts him above all others. His interactions with his fans are just great. He turned down joining Rolling Stones, they wanted him badly. Hendrix was a mediocre singer. Bob Dylan can't sing but a great song writer. Deep Purples lead vocals - Ian Gillan is famous for his 5 octave screams. Each have their own talent. You also need to look at the band as a whole. Watching his other videos, you won't be disappointed.
Now I know what band inspired Dire Straits. This song sounds like a basis for Dire Straits melody and arrangement approach.
Even these days guitarist still recognizes Rory talent as soon as the see him or hear him play he was on another level compared to the guitar players of his time
not the best version but i enjoyed it for that reason. i like philby live at montreaux
There are videos of Rory where anyone who doesn't know him should be introduced. My favorite is the 1977 concert at the Hammersmith Odeon. Fabulous. Since 1965 Rory Gallagher has shown who he was and comparisons with others of his time are absolutely unnecessary and misguided.
Wow
Rory loved old movies + He was really into Kim Philby as far as to write a song Philby. Being from Ireland with their dislike of the English. I personally think this song is another Philby reference. Double Agent Hiding in the shadows playing multiple roles, A little Dr Jeckel, A little Mr Hyde
Do You Read Me is incredible.
As has already been said, this isn't the best performance of Shadow Play to react to, not that it's bad, far from it, just that there are better ones. The setting here, a TV studio, doesn't convey the energy and rapport with the audience that Rory was known for.
The Jeckyll & Hyde line COULD refer to the difference between the way he was offstage/onstage - Offstage he was a quiet, softly spoken, polite person - onstage he was electrifying!
But also as he explained, Rory wrote Shadow Play in bed while suffering from a bad bout of flu , "feeling dazed from too much sleep and so on, and I think it affected me with the lyrics".
Sorry you didn't like his voice, personally I find it very expressive, and well suited to his music. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter, Rory covered a range of styles, from acoustic country blues to hard rock, with a sprinkling of folk and jazz here and there.
Here are a few suggestions
Bullfrog Blues - Old Grey Whistle Test 1976 ua-cam.com/video/2gsqNLvcKT0/v-deo.html
Calling Card - Hammersmith 1977 ua-cam.com/video/4munizC7eJM/v-deo.html
Barley & Grape Rag/Pistol Slapper Blues - Hammersmith 1977 ua-cam.com/video/ayGZ10FngoE/v-deo.html (Acoustic)
I do not agree to the comment in this video that singing is not his thing, by the same rule Mark Knopfler, Bob Dylan, Sting and Joe Cocker are not amazing singers, their voices are either broken or not so powerful, yet they all have something unique in their voice and style that makes them great, anyway the guy is an amazing musician
You need to listen to other copies of the song. Try Bad Penny
AS USUAL , WRONG VIDEO VIDEO BY A MILE ... THE LIVE AT MONTREUX SWITZERLAND IS HUNDRED TIMES BETTER BOY..
It's g ER not her Gallagher the H is silent

Too much talk, not enough Rory
Mate, you are wrong about Rorys singing. Nothing wrong with it.
You two don't have a clue musically Rory was a guitar master best of the best. Put to much on the lyrics its a song take it face value
