REC is a classic horror. It’s just done so well, very scary, intense, and even if you don’t like found footage, this movie just works. Also, def need to watch it over the remake Quarantine. REC is WAY better

Most of the reactions were genuine cause the director who also played pablo casted them on their improv and had a very loose script also the fact that they didn't tell the actors about the jump scares to make their reactions that much realer

Rec and Rec 2 are intense movies. The best in the genre. Rec 3 and 4 well let's pretend they don't exist. I actually thought the origins of the virus being supernatural vs biological was a brilliant twist on the genre.

My unofficial Resident Evil film, with certain liberties. Instead of a mansion it's an apartment complex, the 'evil' residence is a demonic virus, rather than descending into a basement to find a laboratory responsible for the outbreak we ascend into a religioustic penthouse with it's own Lisa Trevor; the Medeiros Girl.

That being said, I really like REC and REC 2. And I still remember one thing I loved about REC 3 was that there was SOMETHING about the way it portrayed a wedding that I felt I would never get from an American movie, and that felt very organic. Can't remember what, so many years later, but I still remember the feeling.
Quarantine, on the other hand, earned my antipathy before it even started because, for some reason, the producers decided to vehiculate the trailer for Quarantine before every screening of REC.
What's the problem, you ask? Did you watch Quarantine's trailer from the day? It, literally, shows the ending to REC. Like... a spoilerific trailer for the remake of the movie I'm about to watch right now? Just... why? Why did you have to be such a dick, Quarantine?

The whip cracking pace of the dialogue also (sadly) reminds me of how much Spanish vocabulary I've forgotten.

I watched this movie at 1am in the dark sitting alone in my house (which is fairly remote in the middle of Scotland). As a result the final 5 mins of this are about the most scared I have ever been when watching a movie. Terrifying. Loved it ever since. And personally I think the idea that the virus is a supernatural manifestation was amazing. Took the film way beyond a mere zombie romp. The first sequel is also fantastic. The subsequent sequels are.... OK.

    REC: Brilliant
    REC2: Meh
    REC3: Fucking garbage
    REC4: Meh
A lot of people shit on it because it is nearly a shot for shot remake, but I thought the American remake 'Quarantine' did a good job of recreating the panic and claustrophobia of the original, and it completely removes the supernatural undertones and makes it a pure infection story. And the sequel 'Quarantine 2' is far superior to any of the REC sequels. Great review gents!!

I for one, abhor found footage films (Blair Witch and Cloverfield can suck it) but I love this movie. There is two things that I disagree with 1) Quarantine is not a bad film, just more of the same. Second, I understand character development is light but the short run time does not allow for that much development and I am ok with that. Plus, I took it as this is pretty much what actually would happen in a crisis situation. People are either trying to save each other or they get in the way. Hollywood stylization of what a hero is has hurt the movie industry so much that certain films use it as satire or as a misdirect under the guise of “subversion” which is bullshit. Honestly, it felt true to form that people show you exactly what they are about within ten minutes of a crisis and Rec does a great job of that without having to have that annoying scene of one up manship “I lost my daughter--Oh yeah well I lost my daughter and my dog” bullshit so prevalent in survival movies, especially fucking found footage films.

Im from Spain, REC 3 was literally a spanish wedding, with [infected] in the same universe of REC. A lot of spanish famous sitcom actors and basically a collection of bad jokes one after another. It was trash in Spain too, and although some people liked it, i dont know any, it had nothing to do with the first 2 movies in terms of quality or creativity. It is the movie that killed the saga for the fans; theres another one that is not that bad but after the third not many people payed attention i think.
I skip the third everytime i watch the saga, and i never notice i did, it has no story.

I usually don't like found footage, the only ones that come to mind when I try to remember liking them are:
    - "The Taking of Deborah Logan" because
    a) Debora is such a sweet character that you just can't avoid sympathizing with her
    b) it has the ONLY cameraman in the history of found footage to, at a certain point, just proclaim "Nope!" and leave. And not in a "tried to leave so he was killed, he turns out to be one of the survivors because he left.
-"As Above, So Bellow", mostly because I'm kinda fed up with found footage movies that end with the person being killed in another dimension or a lost cavern. I mean... for the subgenre to work this freaking movie hae to, at the very least, be FOUNDABLE - And As Above So Bellow is one of the few that explain how the heck the taps would become public.

I felt Quarantine improved a bit on the original, i liked the characters more , they had more resonance especially Angela Vidal, the cameraman , and Jay Hernandez's character , he was the best thing about the remake , huge improvement over the guy in the original who i felt didn't resonate at all on an emotional level
The makeup fx and gore were better , the action scenes were staged more effectively , sound design is expert mode, and i felt it captured the sense of dread and the feeling of being trapped much better than the original
The standout sequence in both films was easily when all hell totally breaks loose and they are trying to get to the loft , it was done in expert fashion in QT, those scenes with the elevator and how Hernandez starts laying a beat down on all the infected is amazing , those last 20 minutes had my nerves jangled . It's still a great sequence in REC, but it was perfected in QT .
Great review, this movie is a bit of a classic for me , i actually feel they are both great films but i prefer QT just a bit more
REC 2 though, man , that one is the best out of the entire series ( remake and originals ) , truly awesome

It's about as much disappointment to me, as was Texas Chainsaw Massacre, when I did finally see it. You see, it was banned in Finland for a very long time and at my youth it became something that every youngster talked about, though no-one had actually seen it. Then I finally had my paws to a (bad) VHS copy of it and was very disappointed. Even now, something like 30 years later, I still don't like it...
Anyway, that's just my thoughts ;)
One of the things, why I don't like "found footage"-films, is that I HATE "shaky cam"-style of filming (Bourne-movies are an exception). It's horrible, just like "Action Directors" who shoot fighting- or shooting scenes with extreme closeups and millions cuts, so that one cannot make any sense of action... Alex Cross, first Expendables and even the first of Nolan's Batman... Though Nolan probably understood this himself and the action is much better on the two sequels...
    Well, rant off :D
REC seems an interesting film though, maybe I'll check it out. I knew about it before, but you know, because of the shaky cam and Found Footage, I never decided to see it ;)

@@Luvie1980 It is a classic and I don't deny it of the impact it has made and rightfully so.
But still it didn't make any impact to me... I find it to be boring and hate that constant screaming and even the fact that there really is no any gore. The best point of the film for me was when LF hits the guy on the head with mallet and he twitches on the floor. That's a horrible scene.
I love Halloween, first Elm Street, first Friday, Night of the living Dead and so on. But for some reason, Texas just didn't "Do it" to me... Don't know why.
But again, I'm not saying it's not a classic or that it's a bad movie. Just that I didn't (and don't) like it very much ;)
      Opinions, opinions ;D

I could never fully get into these kinds of movies. No matter if Blair Witch, Cloverfield or this. It just bores me and I eventually fall asleep lol

This may go again St the wisdom of Lain but I only seen the American remake n it's sequel. I know that those r lesser films but I kinda prefer their explanation for the virus.

It's fascinating and unexpected that the story _seems_ like a zombie/infection crisis-- but in the end we learn it is actually a supernatural cause/monster. A contagious demonic possession? Sounds nuts, but I'm open to anything. The best thing is that the last ten minutes of this movie gave me one of the most wonderful suspense moments I had had in ages. That penthouse and all its trappings: so ominous, creepy, unsettling and troubling ... and then you bring in the hideous she-thing and the night vision, wow. I recommend the movie and while I was watching it I said to my friends, "This would make the greatest Halloween walk-through experience if you could somehow turn an apartment building into this scenario".

Brilliant movie but the demon stuff ruins it, i dunno, whenever i hear demons/supernatural as an explanation when something more mundane would fit equally good if not better just bugs me. Especially when the supernatural hasnt been established as existing in universe up until the final reveal, it feels like lazy writing.

Like with Cloverfield, went to see this movie without knowing anything about it (there wasn't anything better at the time) and was supremely surprised when it became a zombie like movie. The fireman fall is one of the best moments I have had in a cinema - the sudden, overpowering loud echoing sound was worth seeing in there. Also, it might not look it for English people, but the first 5 minutes of the movie has such an incredibly cringe-inducing bad acting from the girl, that I was already at the exit door when the incident started to unravel. So glad I stayed. Thanks for the great review. Hope you put one for Cloverfield, and Overlord soon.

I thought Quarantine was a decent enough remake, but I am rather hard for the lovely Jennifer Carpenter, so maybe I'm biased?
