If I remember right, Skraeling / skrælingi doesn't mean ugly, but rather comes from Skrá, the most accepted translations from that is 'Dry hide sheet piece' or 'Dressed in hide'.
In my old history book, it was translated as "the screamers", and that the vikings in general found their fighting tactics, including the war cries, to be really annoying.
I'm of Scandinavian descent, a heritage I am very proud of...The Vikings were in North America at least 500 years before Columbus. The first known European born in N America was Snorri Thorfinnsson, the son of Thorfinn Karlsefni Thordarson & his wife Gudridr, daughter of Thordbjörn. He was born in Vinland, most likely in the area of Newfoundland, at L'ans aux Meadows.....They returned to Iceland 2 years after his birth.....I suspect if the climate hadn't changed to colder, N America would be much different than it is today....There is still a strong Viking Hermitage in the Hebrides and other North Scottish Islands....The Scottish brogue has the same sing song way of speaking as the Scandinavians
Just to make it clear.. Finland is not part of Scandinavia, but is part of the Nordics.. Finland is geographically not in Scandinavia and their culture is not "germanic-scandinavian".. i see many people still think Finland is part of Scandinavia, and even though i wish it was true, its just in all regards impossible.. we in Scandinavia however do love the finns, but they are more like cousins than brothers and sisters.
@@lindaberg1695 That is true, but is also because Sweden for a period in history laid claim to a huge part of Finland. Same goes for towns in the Faroese Islands and Greenland, having 2 names.. one being danish and the other being local.
you've watched like sooo many videos about the Nordics by now, how do you not know which country is which? You literally pointed at Iceland and asked if it was Finland, I'm so confused how you STILL don't know where Finland or Iceland is by now.
Iceland is a heck of a long way from Finland...Finland shares a border with Russia....Iceland is an island south east of Greenland.....an ocean separates them....
One thing worth noting is that at one point during the middle ages the king of Norway was considered for the position of Emperor of the HRE. If he had been given the position that would bring the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy under Norway, at least on paper (the HRE was a fairly loose union with member states like say Switzerland often acting as independent states) During the viking age Norway almost conquered England. Norwegian Vikings held several major cities in Ireland and large parts of Scotland. A combined HRE+Norway army would probably easily defeat Denmark and take Denmark and what's today southern Sweden. So yeah, imagine if England (and all her colonies), Germany, Italy, Benelux and Austria-Hungary where all Norwegian.
Yet Dublin was founded by the Danes and the Danes were the only ones to actually rule over England.. the terms danelaw and danegeld are pretty obvious evidens of that. Speculating what could have been but that never was is too easy.. danish Vikings almost conquered rome if we all have to speculate from a rather biased viewpoint 🤷 I know its often hard for Norwegian and Swedish nationalists to accept, but the prime power in Scandinavia was Denmark.. both during the viking age and later, not just during the Kalmar union but also during the period where it was litterally named Denmark-Norway. To this day the danish influence on Norway is still very present, especially in bokmål being a 90% copy of Danish.. even the royal family in Norway is to this day Danish. Instead of speculating on fantasies, people should embrace scandinaviaism and accept our common history, where Denmark by far was the prime power both when it came to conquest and colonial power. Denmark held carribean colonies until 1917.. Today a united scandinavia would be a economic powerhouse and would be ranked in the very top among nations, despite a fairly small population. As a small sidenote, Denmark is in all theoretical regards still a empire, the kingdom encompassing 3 countries and danish being mandatory in school in 4 countries. I respect my fellow Scandinavians but i also accept the historical facts that place Denmark at the top during the periods that we here talk about..
Kalmar Union was actually formed under Queen Magrethe 1st . He son was meant to rule Denmark but was too young at first and she expanded meanwhile
Her son was heir to the Norwegian and Danish Thrones. Unfortunately he died before he could become king. And Eric of Pommern became king instead.

Yeah, in the old Norse language the meaning was closer to weakling (e.g. just skin and bones, lacking in muscles).
Bruh they literally called them beta males 💀

Very true!! However, there are many towns in Finland that sport 2 names, the Finnish and the Swedish....

@@jimmywayne983 Oh yes, I am very aware of these things. Tack så mycket!!
As an EU IV player, love how this guy relied on the maps.

Weird map of Denmark. The “now” map shows how the country looked between 1864 and 1920. Where I live has “disappeared” 😂
