- At the Baltic Sea construction of the world's longest underwater rail and road tunnel is underway. The 18-kilometer passageway, due to be completed in 2029, will link Denmark and Germany. The €10 billion project crosses a stretch of the Baltic Sea known as the Fehmarn Belt and will have two double-lane motorways and two electrified rail tracks. The entire tunnel will be built using pre-fab concrete elements.
Right now it's not much more than Europe's largest construction site on the coast of Denmark, 2000 workers are busy preparing for the tunnel. It will consist of pre-fab sections, currently undergoing testing. The pre-fab segments the tunnel will be built from will later allow for two tracks for trains and two roadways for cars and other vehicles. Each one is over 200 meters long and 42 meters wide. The segments will be built on land, lowered into the sea and connected at a depth of 30 meters.

as someone who has traveled through Denmark to Germany many times, I am very excited for this tunnel. It will make Denmark and Sweden more connected to the rest of Europe
Now if we could just get the ferry service restored between Norway and Scotland... or at least Northern England.

Don't worry Hamburg will become one huge traffic jam because North Germany is not able to build a second tunnel through the elbe River to the south of Germany

That comment doesn't really make sense at this phase of the tunnel project (actually projects) in my view. Whether there will be funding or not, we will find out later, but there certainly is some interest. If there weren't any interest and potential final funding, millions wouldn't already have been spent to preliminary studies by different actors (officials in both countries, the EU and private companies). The only thing we can say for sure is that nobody knows yet whether the tunnel will be built or not.
A new high speed railway line from Poland to Tallinn, Estonia is in construction. But getting from there to Helsinki will be a struggle. The crossing is around three times the length of the Fehmarn Tunnel.
@@adoatero5129 yeah but either country doesn't want fund it and he EU has stated multiple times that there are other bigger priorities, according to the entrepreneur who is trying do it.
and there was a news in Finland like in 2019 what said the tunnel is not going be profitable based on how much it cost, so no private funding.

It's Denmark only building the tunnel, Germany is not involved. It's all Danish money. Germany is responsible for the connection on German soil. The map showing the route today and in the future, is misleading. The island of Als/Alsen/Alsia is not part of the existing route.
Although this is a huge and expensive project, it will save both the environment and economy in the long run. Saving longer transports through Jutland, or more polluting transportation by ship. Denmark chose to finance the more expensive, but also more environmentally friendly solution of a tunnel instead of a bridge. Ensuring this will absolutely be a win win in the long run.
there's the slight caveat that the immense quantities of concrete will set a truly immense carbon footprint themselves - the actual carbon reduction will be very little in total, kf it won't in fact encourage so much traffic that it will end up making a bigger carbon footprint than if it had just been kept as a ferry line 😅
@@jakobraahauge7299 Yes you are right, concrete is a huge problem regarding CO2, the biggest danish company to make concrete, has a process that saves 30% of the CO2, compared to traditional production. Hopefully it will get better with more research.
Ferry lines cannot pull nearly comparable traffic to what the tunnel will. The huge advantage will be from rerouting traffic that currently goes through Jutland and the Great Belt connection, more than what is saved on the very polluting ferries.

@@jakobraahauge7299 You may be right, but AFAIK Denmark pays almost everything (the entire tunnel), Germany only pays the parts that is on German land. EU contributes 1.1 billion Euro. Ultimately it will be user paid, so Denmark only guarantee/front the money. So Sweden paying besides being users, is completely news to me.

Just make something clear. Germany is not building the worlds longest underwater rail and road tunnel.
It will be completely built and run by Denmark, and is paid by Denmark and a little bit of EU.
All Germany is doing is the connecting infrastructure on the German side.
Germany opted out of the partnership after stalling the project for 15 years.
Though many German Nationals have migrated to Denmark to work on the project, since it is better paid than most German construction work, due to the higher wages in Denmark.

This isn‘t true. The partially state-owned and largely state-funded DB (Deutsche Bahn) Group of Germany is doing a huge amount of the rail construction and operation of the tunnel, and the german government is also paying for infrastructure required on land on Fehmarn.
Thankfully it's being built by a Danish company. If it was built by Germany it wouldn't be finished until 2100.

Dutch Government is also planning fast high speed trains from Amsterdam to Groningen and is researchinh the possibility to build new tracks from Groningen to Bremen. Hopefully we can build a comprehensive network in Europe

But only to Hamburg, any further will be a problem, because capacity is missing. Since the additional capacity new HSR line between hamburg/Bremen - Hannover is in typical german fashion delayed and still in planning phase, after a solid 30 years + of planning already....
The so called "Y-Trasse" if smbdy wants additional informations about how 30+ years of planning is possible, when your existing lines are out of capacity and trains have delays of 30+min. and total canellations nearly daily....
Finally!!! When the Öresund bridge was about to be built there were also too many against it. Today not a soul would ever want to take the shaky ferry.
I’m excited to see this undertaking moving forward! It will certainly make it a quicker from Hamburg, Lübeck to Copenhagen and Malmö. I know the costs are billions of Euros, but I would also like to see another Baltic crossing, this time as a spur from this route that would connect Denmark to Rostock, which would connect Berlin, the east of Germany and the rest of Eastern Europe, which (ideally) should ease congestion in Hamburg.
Interesting how there isn't a single mention of the fact that it was the German state that was a major delaying factor in the project as they had no interrest in it at all and it only was possible to get the project started because Denmark decided to take the majority if not all of the costs for this project. But now that things are moving ahead it suddenly can be presented as this amazing common project 🤷♂🤦♂ Btw, it's not the first time Germany is a major obstacle when it comes to common european infrastructure projects. You can ask pretty much every neighbouring state to Germany. So much for Deutschland Geschwindigkeit.
Denmark would be a bigger beneficiary to the tunnel.

@@blackbogbrewing3186 For half the Danish population the "old" land connection will still be the normal route to Germany. For people and goods on trains. BUT the limits of capasity is reached regarding transportation of goods across Denmark. So this new fast link to and from Europe will take some of the burden away from the existing roads and rails. And for the half of the population living in the eastern parts of our country, and for Sweden!, this new connection will be much faster and direct. Time IS money in our modern world. And this is not just for people going on holiday. But also for goods going to or from the Nordics and the rest of Europe.
I have no doubt that the Danes will be able to do this,
I only doubt in which century the German side will be finished.
Apparently just like with the alpine tunnel project, Denmark is building and Germany needed to get its act together to not be surprised once there's a train suddenly coming out of the ground with nowhere to go @_@
Additionally in regards to German mega projects there's also the Stuttgart train station and Berlin airport to make fun of (while crying).

Stuttgart is a very complicated project everybody will be very proud of once it's completed. And it's progressing quite well right now.
You might have never heard of the nuclear power plant in Finland. Took more time than the Berlin airport and was more expensive too.

The approval process was only a problem in Germany. Denmark was ready to start building 10 years ago.
The Germans were only in favor of building infrastructure with Russia until quite recently.
If a German is asked for an opinion about potential development it will be negative, just to be safe.

This is good and appreciable for the infrastructure and connectivity. This will help to connect people with people much more faster than ever between the two countries. And it's great for the Trade and commerce.

It is gonna be substantially more. Current estimates are around the 60-75€ mark. Taking the great belt bridge today is 30-50€ one way.

I hope NATO are already paying very close attention and will continue to do so after the tunnel is completed, to monitor any Russian submarines or 'fishing vessels' lurking there. Nobody should trust them, and such a tunnel can be very vulnerable I guess. I hope it’s not my job to warn them, I’m sometimes shocked by how naive the people dealing with such matters can be.

Actually, only the Danes wanted this project and convinced Germany to take part. The Danes are responsible for the construction and costs of the tunnel (€7.5 billion). The Germans build on the German side and bear these costs (€3.5 billion)
@bututo1944 Wjy would Germans be involved, they have near zero experience in infrastructure projects of this size.
Denmark on the other hand are world leaders.
The main Engineering company on the project is Danish COWI, who has been building bridges since the 19040's.
The Germans do have engineering Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG, responsible for the foundation of the railroad tracks that goes inside the tunnel once it is built.
And some dutchies are doing the diggin while supervised by somedanes, employed by some swedes, that are contracted by some danes.

Yes. And as the maps in this video shows, there are rails between them. This tunnel will significabtly reduce travel time between eastern Denmark and Germany, and between Sweden and Germany.

You will be in 2,5 hours from Hamburg in Kopenhagen by train. That's extremely practical for Denmark...
Cuts travel time between Hamburg and Copenhagen/Malmö more than halve and the rail system in Jutland is avoided which has been neglected and is not up for any more capacity especially regarding cargo if I am remembering correctly

The legal side he mentioned is not really similar in Germany and Denmark.
In Denmark you can bring a case/objection to the court system. When a verdict is cast, it normally makes it final. Unless something new is discovered and submitted to the court, there is no way to change the verdict, or delay the project.
In Germany each and every interest group can bring the case to the German court system, and they often have to be heard individually. So while there were less than a handfull of court cases in Denmark, there were thousands of complaints submitted to the German court system. A large part of those supported by the greedy ferry companie not wanting the competion of the tunnel. The Ferry company even paid for "protestors" to demonstrate against the project.

Its already around delayed around 10 years. It was planned to open in 2020.
The two similar sized projects in Denmark ( Storebælt and Øresund ) opened close to the sceduled date!! And Øresund actually was CHEAPER to build than it was estimated! They started the Femern project in 2021, so I expect it to be opened close to scedule in 2029!
@@ViktorFromDK It was/is the political process, that takes time! There is an endless amount of "projects", that they have to prioritize between. "Everybody" has each their own preferred projects, so obviously it takes time to agree politically on which ones to go ahead with first. Once the decision is made, in this case both left-, center- and rightleaning Parties are behind this, then the ACTUAL building of the tunnel will follow quite closely to the planned scedule. As shown with both Storebælt and Øresund.

I remember clearly trhe rail passage across this strati back and forth on my travels in 1988. Also significant the rail connection between Helsingor and Helsingborg is now somewhat irrelevant with the Oresundbron that was opened 12 later between COpenhagen and Malmo.
Ive been carefully following this project since I first learned of it in 2015. When the live cameras went on line in 2019 or whatever I was very veyr happy
As someone living in the Helsingor-Helsinborg region. It is more complicated than that.
The Oresund bridge is reaching max capacity already so something has to be built. I am actually for the fixed rail and road between Helsingor - Helsingborg but I am not for a prefab tunnel like Femern as it would destroy the environment up here and most people on both sides of the strait wont have that. It has to be a bore tunnel but that is also the most expensive project. Therefore it has stalled

From a European perspective it’s a great project. For the locals, on Fehmarn, probably not. It’s a higher goal, that’s achieved here. The people on Fehmarn mostly dislike the whole approach. And would have preferred their quote life, as it is.
I personally really like the perspective, to reach Denmark faster. Especially by train, in the future.
Being familiar with typical German attitude towards developments, and especially the Ossis, hardly anyone would be exited, except for the excellent possibility of quarrels and bitching 👀🙄😁

I think that's highly unlikely! Riding a bike through an 18 km tunnel is neither safe nor healthy. All of Denmark's other cross-sea links ban cyclists and pedestrians. Mopeds may be allowed if they can be designated as motorcycles. A question of speed, I suppose.
You can take your bike on the train through the tunnel, just like over the existing bridges from Jutland through to Sweden.
Don’t you worry, Scandlines has no intention of canceling the ferries once the tunnel is there.
A lot of people like to stretch their legs once in awhile, and the ferry company still has 1-day return trip tickets for approx. 40€ on the Rødby-Puttgarten line. And the latest I’ve heard is that it intents to keep those tickets in the future as well, so it may take 75 minutes each way (boarding + sail time) but if you save 30-40€ alot of people will do that.
Business travellers won’t, but alot of the rest? Sure.

Notice, these sort of projects aren't going on in North America anymore. The stagnation here has gradually crept up.
The swedish government must also help fund this huge project. Swedish people will be able to travel through all Europe as never before.
It's mainly a commercial state project funded by tolls payed by the users of the tunnel. So the Swedish people will pay for it as well.

@@sollte1239 that is also a bit of an exaggeration, German Exporters ans Logistics Companies will also love the faster connection. But yeah in comparison the Danes were harder pushing for it than the Germans.

As a German i can say, it will be a never ending construction side. Made in Germany is over! Its all about to get Money as fast as u can but this construction side will be find an end in like 20 years... maybe...

Personally I am not convinced that letting people drive themselves through an 18 km tunnel is a safe thing to do. I feel like it would be safer to make people drive onto train cars or something similar.
All the germans need is a corridor to sea and quickest way to reach paris via belgium.
