What a beautiful masterpiece. Soft, alluring, sophisticated, and magical. Imagine this is playing in the background and you are with your beloved lover sharing a magical kiss for the first time.
thank God. Finally a version of this piece that doesn’t give equal weight to both hands. The melody is in the right hand, the left-hand plays the compliment. That’s the way it supposed to be done. A lot of people play with equal weight and it just eff’s the whole thing up. This is beautifully played with the exact amount of touch necessary between the two hands.
Tak pięknie i prawdziwie B Liu zanurza się i nas w nocnej magicznej przestrzeni , w której chce sie wciąż być i sluchać tej cudnej romantycznej muzyki ,jesteśmy z Tobą !
I was looking for a good interpretation of this nocturne. Bruce Liu's was the first one I came across. As soon as I started listening I knew I needed not look any further. Absolutely beautiful, full of feeling (in fact I think he is crying, not just sweating profusely, at the end of the video). I honestly am lost for words...Beautiful does not even get close to what I would like to say. Thanks for posting this amazing video.
Also listen to Dimitry Masleev, another great performance, Also Grigory Sokolov and Valentina Lisitsa, are the best interpretations for me of this nocturne.
@@leonardodelyrarodrigues3752 there is another great Chinese pianist, very well known in China. He has just posted his version. Try it: ua-cam.com/video/mMvkqF9L_4Y/v-deo.html
I am assuming this was a very small, intimate group of listeners, judging by the smattering of polite applause at the end. I expected to hear men weeping and woman swooning. Never have l heard this piece played so magnificently. Every single note.
I thought the same!!! In the introduction, they said this performance took place in Chopin’s salon in Paris.Salons were where Chopin performed most of his pieces since salon back then only had a small group of people that are close to Chopin to give him a comfortable atmosphere unlike most opera houses filled with strange audiences (I read this in a book and yes Chopin preferred playing in a salon for only a small group of people)
Wow, what incredible touch and sensitivity. Also, bringing a fresh approach to a piece played so often. One of the greatest living pianists with a great future.
Agree whole-heartedly . . . for me it's the first time hearing him play. I'm going to have to watch the full concert. Audience seemed a little sedate in comparison to the excellence of what they had just heard.
I listened to this video again and again. He played it beautifully and gently touched my inner soul. In the end, I felt a tranquility that no words can describe.
Noticing how he is almost only using his 1 2 and 3 fingers for the right hand is probably the key to how accurate and expressive each note is played, along with the emotions and the dynamic movements of his hands over the instrument.
Chopin's #20 nocturne, a hauntingly beautiful piece of music. Mr. Liu plays it on the Fazioli concert grand. Its sound is so beautiful, seemingly perfect for the pianist and for this music. This is a privileged small audience in a privileged small salon. The music is so beautiful that it was transcribed for violin and many top violinists play it. I have a special feeling towards Mr. Liu because I once studied in Montreal, in the late '60s. Bravo!
Mille mercis pour cette magnifique performance ❤ mon Dieu quel talent ! On sent que vous vivez chaque note que vous jouez . Bravo 👏 c’est l’une des meilleures interprétations de ce nocturne de Chopin ❤❤❤❤❤
This nocturne must have been played at the end of a longer, more demanding recital. I don't think he would have even broken a sweat playing just this nocturne.
A uniquely beautiful and very wide color spectrum, above all a unique dynamic and emotionality, as a result of such a gentle and colorful sound and an unobtrusive tempo, without breaking the upper limit of volume and speed for this Chopin piece. Phenomenal and very demanding, I believe that the feeling was created by itself in the moment of reliving by holding, prolonging and slowing down the performance of certain notes and phrases, or volume and tempo, exactly as this extraordinary pianist feels. Articulation of the experienced or interpretation superb and unique....👏
Gracefully played Frederic Chopin: Nocturne! Nothing else was to be expected from Bruce Liu. And playing at the Salon Frederic Chopin it’s even more demanding. Thank you, Deutsche Grammophon for upload.
@@FoxyJohn You don't need to think about that, listen to the melody, it's perfect, it depends on what reference you have. In the end it's a matter of taste :) . You know, a computer can play this also.
@@tiberiuoprea8482weird comment. The reference is the autograph score. Which I have. And it’s wrong. He plays F# instead of D# in the left hand. And it’s all I can think about.
@@FoxyJohn Maybe he made errors, I don't argue about that as I don't have the score and didn't play myself this piece ever, but it's a shame that you cannot hear the melody just because one or two mistakes. I looked for a different play of this song on youtube and imo this is the best version. I don't care about stupid mistakes that I can't even detect, but the melody is beautiful and this is what matters to me. I also like Miles Davis which is known for his take on mistakes, which he loved and transformed it to make a beautiful melody, still he is considered one of the best.

Bruce, I hope you read this because I have to tell you that you are already a legendary pianist for the 21st Century. With a lifetime of repertoire ahead of you to acquire, you have already, in my view, joined the Greats. You have at your command as much or more nuance and sensitivity as Horowitz and a maturity that matches Rubistein! Please, make videos and CDs so I can collect your wondrous playing... I am not saying that a pianist like Marta Augerich is not a super pianist... to each his or her own... but IMHO, you are much more than she... for Mozart, there is Lili Krause (Piano Concertos with Stephen Simon, Conductor) and Maria João Pires is tops. You are just like them. Keep up the good work!
Beautiful. Expressive. Sensitive.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yes this was the first time I hear a cinese pianist to play like this, with whole soul, not only techique

That's what makes Bruce special. Fluently playing different dynamics on different hands is one of the toughest things there is to do on a piano imo.
You sound like a music snob 😢
yes his voicing in the right hand is exceptional
Bass line
Not even Chopin himself thought it was possible to play it like this
Liu様あなたの音色に生涯にわたります神様の祝福とご加護を祈り続けております。
the way he finished, with sweat dripping down his face, oh god it was magical, his hands were so soft and sensual 10/10 perfomance
I guess, it was a tear. And I was crying too

Notwithstanding the factor of his sweating the performance is just perfect.
I heard Bruce Liu place this exact piece in Montréal. A privilege that I will remember forever!

No. Valentina.
He blends the scales so smoothly. He starts quiet then ends loudly, just how it should be.

Un pianista fantastico, davvero dotatissimo, un grande fuoriclasse.
What truly beautiful music, played truly wonderfully well by Bruce Liu. What an insipid response for such great playing. A Listener for pleasure.
How beautiful! So delicately played. Thank you Messrs Chopin and Liu for bringing some peaceful respite into a troubled world. Clara
