Bamboo Didgeridoo - how I quickly make one

  • I show how I make a bamboo didgeridoo, from tree to tootin'. I am essentially following the traditional methods of Australian Aboriginal Peoples. They use eucalyptus hollowed by termites or bamboo.
Select a piece of bamboo around 2 inches in diameter. It is better if it is standing dead and dried, but make sure it's not cracked. You can use green bamboo, but you risk it splitting when it dries.
The internodes toward the base are the thickest, so if you use those parts, you'll need a strong tool to cut through them (I use a steel throwing spike in the video). For the rest, a length of bamboo can be used to punch through them, then chip off the edges clinging to the walls. Any rod can be used, but it needs a flat end to chip away these internode edges.
For the mouthpiece, I just dip it in beeswax till a thick layer builds up.
Play it by making a fart noise with just your lips and change the fart's pitch to match the resonant frequency (you will feel it when it "hits").
