    Yeah about the frog being “more sensitive”, the dude in this video was completely right, it isn’t more sensitive, but I think a lot of barns and trainers stress to tell their students to not pick the frog or mistake it for mud or rocks.

    • @FluffyDragonDrawing
      @FluffyDragonDrawing 2 роки тому +5

      That makes a lot of sense actually, i do have a question though? I heard that the frog is meant to help the horse 'feel' the ground; how would it do that without there being some sensitivity?

      @avillee 2 роки тому +11

      I was told to just be more careful there because it's softer, so when you use a pick you could put holes/ridges in there where rocks can get stuck. So I usually just used the bristly side of the pick to clean there.

      I realise my comment is a bit late, but I imagine people think of the frog as something similar to the big pad on dogs and cats, which *is* sensitive. Shoes are usually to help with terrain or are a standard for shows/competitions. Most retired horses don't get shoed, but if they're working in rough terrain or competeing it's expected to protect their hoof!

    • @AimlessSavant
      @AimlessSavant 3 роки тому +302

      Well put it this way. The horse was designed by natural progression of their evolution to gallop across solid, malleable dirt. When humans created roadways out of stronger and stronger sediments it would cause extreme wear and tear of horse hooves. The only way to protect against this was by creating a metal shoe. Though as a consequence horses with horseshoes receive almost no errosion of their hoof. Thus the hoof will require periodic trimming to refit the shoe if needed, and keep the hoof from becoming too cumbersome.

    Genuine question here: in the wild do horses have to worry about keeping their hooves clean/maintained? 🐴 What did they do for centuries before us farriers started shoeing them? Or do they naturally have solutions for it that don't work anymore because they live in captivity?? 🤔 Thanks for any answers 💙

    • @TheScorpion0081

      Friction. Horses naturally run a lot in the wild. To the point where friction from the dirt and rocks that are kicked up naturally keeps their hooves from growing beyond the point of comfort. Same with wild bulls, zebra, and other hooved animals.

      Wild horses have to travel 15-20 miles a day to find adequate food and water. Their hooves will be worn and chipped by the terrain. Look up what the hoof of a wild mustang looks like. The bottom, including the frog is hard and there is concavity. The toe area will have a worn area that gives the horse “rollover”. Horses are crazy adapted to live in the wild. That is not to say that the weak don’t get culled.

      Does the horse really appreciate this? Does their deminor change for the better after this?
      Do they know what is going on?

      @@waleah4855 I'm not that person you were asking but I'm not sure if they answered it. I think horses do appreciate it because if something is hurting them hopefully the farrier can help if it is hoof related. Also horses hooves are like our fingernails and toenails. They need to get trimmed every one in a while and sometimes things can happen to them and they need to get fixed. For example a hangnail. Or an ingrown toenail. Idk. Those are the things I think of. I hope this made sense. It is a little difficult to write out.

    I'm glad to see that your sister-in-law went and helped out two horses that needed a new home. People don't realize there or rescue groups for almost any animal out there. Even at your local animal shelter they sometimes have some odd animals other than dogs and cats and bunnies. A new trend is roosters and chickens. For whatever reason people are going out buying them and realize you have to feed and water and house them instead of doing the work they turned them over to the shelter.
    It's good to see someone who knows what they're doing working with the horses. I enjoyed watching your videos I look forward to seeing more.

    Sitting here in Nashville, TN, just found your channel and I'm fascinated hearing your explanations. My last horse was an off the track thoroughbred who developed navicular disease. We went through a lot of farriers with different ideas how to deal with that, so I have a real interest in making problems better with the foot of a horse. You do a great job, thanks for letting us watch.
