Bareknuckle Juggernaut Pickup Set (Raw Tones Test and Review)

- Here is a much more in depth explanation and test of my signature pickup's range of sounds.
I have an uncovered set in my Jackson Custom Shop 7, so I made this video for those of you who wanted to hear some raw tones with the pickup. This video runs through clean, mid gain and high gain settings on different pickup positions.
You can get more info on the pickups here:

And purchase them here:

Why oh why didn't you call them "Chuggernauts"
LOL!!!
Chuggopotamus
Dan O'Flaherty Chuggasaurus
These pickups have a lot of definition, and are well phrased.... Could've called them Chuggathesaurus

Lol, love it
I remember when I seen this video for the first time and checking the price I thought I would never be able to afford anything like that. Today I own 3 sets of those, man time flys.
Your logic is faulty and you are not speaking from experience. I have many recorded experiments that would prove otherwise. In fact, when designing this guitar, we put the same set in guitars with different body woods and the audible AND recorded result was always different. Wood is a factor. Body wood and neck wood density especially so.
You show 'em Misha
As someone who builds guitars, I can confirm wood does matter.
@@ryancozzolino7832 nice to see that some people know their shit in this age of anti tonewood agenda lol
Im sorry Misha, I was left uncertain... Are the pickups dynamic?
dammit we had a sneak peak at zero and we didnt even know it
i was just thinking the same haha!
+Stephen Kessel This came out after PII.
+ColtonJW Zero was in their Clear EP which came out in 2014 and PII came out in 2012 :)
+Do You Even Djent Oh duh. I'm stupid. I was thinking of the wrong song. My apologies.
ColtonJW no problem
If anything, the Jugg set is less focused on "Djent" than the Aftermath or BH because any guitarist who can pick hard can make it djent, but with the Jugg set, guitarists of other genres can make the pickups really sing!
Honestly, that's the best clean humbucker sound I've ever heard.
I have heard lots of tones and those cleans are some of the best clean solid body tones I have heard too. In my mind lots of fenders themself have some of the best solid body clean tones and I am not surprised that many people have got custom made pickups with Fenderish stratish tones or teleish tones. Idk if that was in Misha's mind when getting these pickups made, but just saying. The way some modern pickups sound without eq changes blows my mind these days, even stock pickups in some lower priced ones. I have Hollow Body guitars as well as a solid body. My guitar teacher had some of the same ideas about good guitar tones for mixes and I am glad my sensitive ears and brain picked up what good eq was for certain genres and solo playing too.
@@SpartanLaserCanon good lord flex much? Lol
@@bradhargis2261 How? He said he has hollow body guitars as well as solid body's. It's not like he said I have 4 PRS Wood Library's, 2 50's Gibson's and a few Mayones knocking around lol
One of the things I always look for in a pickup is that it has a "vocal" quality. That is, it has some sort of resemblance to an actual voice. at 0:49 these pickups legit sound like a guy saying "doot," so I'm highly impressed
Just noticed Zero is playing in the background haha
It's also used for the 'Dirty Groove' sound test for the Juggs on the BKP website
cazza710 Yeah but that was a stripped down version according to Misha...or more like a young version of it
It's incredible! I have always loved BKP pickups, and when I got the opportunity to not only design a brand new pickup with Tim, but also have him be insistent that the pickup was perfect in every way before we even think about releasing it really meant a lot to me. We spent a year designing this, and it was so worth it haha!
I'm really impressed with how well chords ring out even with a considerable amount of gain.
The higher notes somehow manage to cut through it all, and still sound so defined, and yet the low notes are still heavy. I want these pickups so bad.
The guitar in the video has a basswood body, it will sound amazing in that!
Hey everyone! I purchased a set and just had my guy at jackson install them in my new guitar, and I love them! Thanks Misha! You signed my guitar at the show @ the Observatory. Not sure if I can share the link on here but I'll try, it was my first run with these. soundcloud (.com ) /alterationstudios/bareknucle-juggernauts-first
Playing the guitar is awesome.
***** lmao
Just an up date. I put a set of these in a cheap ass RGA. Now my favorite guitar I’ve ever played.
2 years later it still slaps and I have a set up nail bombs in an Ibanez prestige.
@@Graey haha could you post a link to a picture? Would love to see the guitar if you don't mind
@@danieldavidson5447 that RGA unfortunately no longer has those pick ups and I put them into an RGIB. Much better fit!
@@Graey oh awesome! How long have you been playing for now?
@@danieldavidson5447 playing? Maybe like 7 years. Practicing like 0
Anyone else notice that the song in the background is "Zero" from Clear???
Totally just realized Zero is playing during the intro of the video... we got a demo all the way back in september!
Dude. The ending of this is FUF RE-RECORDED. Release that shit to the public, we've been waiting for 9 years to pay you for an updated version!
How about now
The pickups are available uncovered (with several different bobbin and pole piece options) or with a variety of covers to suit your taste. The laser etched logo is also optional, so you can greatly change the look of the pickups to best fit the guitar you are putting them in without changing the sound of them!
really cool! I'll have to grab a set and give them a try! :)
Hey

SOLD! wait are they passive? Fuck it, SOLD!
Misha, I kinda liked your tone with Crunchlab more (GM djent set), it was more midrangey. Maybe it was just a different settings on axe-fx, how do you compare those two? Can Jugg sound similar? I was about to order the set, but got a lil confused. Thanks!
I'm glad it sounds like a guitar, reminds me of those good 'ol Engl days.
It will sound amazing in that guitar!! Do it! (then show me a pic!)
You will be so surprised with how much better and dynamic your tone will be! Do it!
1:57 those first two chords sound straight out of FF7. I'm sure if you changed the 3rd chord it would be one of those Nobuo songs, just can't think which one.
UncleRob199 hes a huge ff fan so I assume that it is heavily inspired by it
im watching in december 2022, misha was so reserved and soft spoken back then, you can really hear how experience has made him so much more comfortable and confident in what he says
Probably before he made million's
I know you weren't asking me, but the mahogany body will likely give your guitar a slightly darker "voice" than a basswood body would. As for the fretboard, I don't think you will notice any sort of difference from that. There are so many factors that go into how your guitar sounds (how your electronics cavities are router, your strings, the size of your truss rod channel, the paint/coating, and many more) that you probably shouldn't worry about it. At worst your sound won't be quite as tight.
great Pickups, to sad they are expensive as fuck
When Jackson custom shop QC was top notch…
If that was a Juggernaut teaser at the end, I might have shit myself
"you can get this really buttery mid gain sound with it"
Paula Deen Approves
The set will sound amazing in that guitar!
The burden of proof is on you, not me, pal. It is a widely tested and accepted fact that tonewoods affect tone (hence the name). So if you are going to make a claim that it doesn't make a difference despite what thousands upon thousands of luthiers and musicians have to say from experience, I am afraid you will be the one who will have to conduct the experiments and provide the data that not only shows otherwise, but also why everyone else has been supposedly "tricked" for so long. Good luck!
I think the tone he had on the first album was perfect.
Having fine tuners is so useful, and with the tremol-no you can have the bridge in dive only or fully floating mode in no time with the turn of a few thumb screws. Versatility win.
I have tried them, I am not a fan. Lace stuff sounds good on cleans for sure, but for high gain stuff it's harsh and a bit out of control. Not very tight and kinda noisy. I wouldn't be able to use them.
Any set is you buy calibrated, it just means that the neck and bridge are matched. I have an open set. The other options are for single pickups, not a set.
Damn. I want some electric 8 string pickups with good cleans... I know he played a 7 string but still those cleans ugh... UPDATE: They do make 8 string versions of those pickups now and I found out recently 🤘
Hey ! this guitar doesn't have the Periphery inlay , is that optional.
+boostuse Yes, by default they don't have the inlay.
+Misha Mansoor what song at the end of this video ?
+daniel leonardo fuf
I was going through a blackstar ht-20 amp on that one. You are just hearing the difference in amp on that one, not a fair comparison at all unfortunately. Jugg would sound even better than the pickups in the Djent set if it was going through that rig.
I hope that clip at 5:10 will be on juggernaut!!!
I used to be the same way too until I got this set!
Not only that, but you can get any choice of the cover finishes and even the logo etch if you were so inclined! I would just double check that the Carvin routes are the same size as EMG. If they are you are all good!
Basswood just consistently gets good results. My favorite sounding guitars tend to be my basswood ones, and players like Petrucci, Govan, Satriani and Vai also seem to have noticed haha.
are you using a basswood body guitar on this video?
Absolutely dude, I am sure you will love them in that guitar!!
The Opals are in a completely different league from the A7Xs. These are comparable to the Adam S3 series. You get what you pay for haha!
2:06 such beautiful chords😭, damn how do they come up with such great and futuristic sounding chords...fucking unreal ❤️
Misha I love you!
same!
you gay brow?
Wet Sigh noup but he is amazing man!
***** Well, that escalated quickly.
***** LOL. Now what you got to say?
They are just noodly clean riffs haha, but thanks! All BKPs including these are passive.
I always block them with a tremol-no!
That's cuz my technique sucks haha.
Output wise they will be fairly well matched, but there might be overall eq differences, which may or may not be your thing.
Oh if that's the case the Jugg set will not only sound killer but look amazing in that Carvin. Those DC700s are great guitars!
Yeah, actually because the bridge is so versatile that it sounds great on cleans and leads, if I had a guitar with only one pickup it would have to be a Jugg bridge, otherwise I would really miss that neck pickup when it came to cleans and leads.
All of the prototype sets were sent to me uncovered to keep things simple. The set being shown is actually the first covered set made and was put together well after the set in the guitar was sent. They will sound exactly the same, and uncovered sets are available if you prefer that aesthetic.
Due to the nature of the pickups having pole pieces, it would have to be made to fit your particular guitar, and I don't know how "machinable" that is at this point in time. If you want to find out for sure though, just email Tim about the possibility once the 8 string version becomes available!
Cubase 6
Yes the pick attack is very present and the tone is very defined if you need to shred! They are also very rich in harmonic content so they are very expressive on the bridge for leads.
It should sound pretty similar due to the construction and body woods. The Jugg will be great in a UV777!
You should post some pics of the set in your guitar on sevenstring when you get the set!
This is actually one of my main qualms with the AM and Ceramic pickups in general, so this is one of the main things that was addressed with the Jugg set!
There are a lot of aspects about the Aftermath that I really like, for example how aggressive and tight they are, so those aspects are completely there in the Jugg, but you also get dynamics and top end that isn't harsh as well thanks to the hybrid design. I would bet that you would love the Jugg set!
How is that proof?
Absolutely. That was one of my issues with the AM set as well, and one of the things I was intent on addressing with this set!
Definitely the Juggernaut based off of what you are looking for!
So far I have tried them in Ash, Korina/Limba, Mahogany and Alder and they sound fantastic in all of those guitars!
Actually, the Jugg set also has asymmetry in the coils, so it is taking advantage of both that design philosophy and the hybrid magnets!
Your guitar will definitely benefit from the pickup change!
Somehow Misha and BKP have made one of the greatest pickups in the world. Bulb is all over the place with his style from virtuoso soloing to thick or djenty gain and it REALLY shows in the pickup. STILL cannot believe how good they are. Dare I say it, But it's like he took an EMG 81, a SD Blackout, A BKP Aftermath, handed them to BKP and said "put these in one pickup". Used EMG all my life, but this pickup changed that.
MISHA.
IS THAT A REMASTERED VERSION OF FÜF IN THE BACKGROUND?!
It sounds like it! The solo is the same. I want a new FUF... i loved that track.
I recognised the groove!
Hopefully Misha will be kind to us and put it in his solo album!
Randall Morris That is Zero, featured in the Clear EP that's coming soon!
No, the one in the end.
Zuurkool1 That's definitely Fuf
I have a set in my B6 currently and it sounds insane. The B6 was one of the guitars used to develop the pickup!
I have been hunting new pickups for an Ibanez RG470 that I bought in 1993. I have looked at DiMarzio and Seymour Duncan pickups. Bare Knuckle is new to be but they seem to have the tone I have been chasing for years.
I love the Opals. Barefoots are great but incredibly expensive.
I figured I would put em where they are most needed haha!
That is actually a pretty fucking clean pickup. I needs one.
Мишка...Мишка...Где твоя улыбка?
I have them on my 8ght strings. I love to work with them, simply a professional tool
Hey well at least my pickups won you over!
I still have mine, coincidentally I have mine in a blue Jackson, but a 6-string Dinky.
Then at a show 7 years ago, I grabbed a Periphery/bulb Strap, so this baby blue is "P Vi: this Thing Djents.. A real genre"
Would the 6 string matched pair of these sound good in the ec-1000 that comes originally with the duncans in it? I'm going to replace the duncans with the juggernauts, just making sure it would be a good fit for that guitar or not?
6 String Jugg sets are available dude!
Sorry I pulled your hand off your guitar Misha!!!
You guys kick ass!! Please come back to Denver soon!!!

Hey I know you get like a million of these questions a day, but I gotta Ibanez rgd2127z. Do you think these would be a good fit for them or can you think of some other pickups that would be better? The most important qualities im looking for are insane clarity on 6 and 7 string chords, and a mad hot neck pickup that really showcases your playing style. I also play in drop g/ a standard and pick hard as shit if that helps
Hey Misha hopefully you see this. Have you ever considered doing something on your own. Like a "Misha Mansoor project" Because i just found out about you and listened to periphery and didn't really care for it. But then i went to your sound click and i was listening to your ideas and songs for hours! even songs that are on periphery now like Zyglrox. But once periphery's vocalist comes in it kills it...Please don't take any offense to this but it would be great to hear i side project.
The guy in the video demonstrated that with one guitar made of plastic and one guitar made of ash they sounded exactly identical with the same pickups and the exact same distance from string to pickup distance despite one of them not even having a wood body. To be honest, you don't even need these trials. All you need is a knowledge of how magnets work. Plus, you claimed to have experimented on the same subject yet won't show me evidence. Btw, it's "support" not "proof"; That's how science works
If you have proven this with multiple replicated experiments then I would like to see the evidence. Also, when putting the same pickups in different bodies composed of different woods did you make sure to use the exact same strings, the exact same bridge/nut, and did you set the strings at the exact same height every time you installed them? I know that woods do affect sound acoustically but I'm talking about when the guitar is plugged in. When it is, only the pickups and pots affect the sound.
Actually, you seen to be unaware as to how magnets work. I'm sure you already now that pickups are made of magnets and they create an electromagnetic field around the strings and detect when they vibrate causing a disturbance on the magnetic field. Why would the wood affect this? It isn't a conductor nor is it suspended in the emf. Magnets cannot sense wood for the same reason that a junkyard scrap magnet doesn't attract twigs and branches to it.
Dear M&M's. I currently have a covered Nailbomb in a 7 string guitar that can only technically have 1 pickup (bridge position). Though I enjoy BK pups, and think the Holy Diver set in my old Ibanez RG sound great, I feel like the Nailbomb fell a little flat, especially clean. Coil splitting and rolling the tone off is the only hope for decent cleans with the Nailbomb. Notier, technical playing when distorted isn't as tight as the HD. Do you think the Juggster might be a better match? Thanks!
I thought that too, beacause of the fact it is an hybrid between alnico and ceramic, which is very interesting, but I noticed that you use to pick strings very strongly while playing riffs, much more than I do, so I was a little unsure about the effective potentiality of these pick-ups while hitting heavy rythms and stuff like that. I cant' help myself deciding if the great cleanliness of the Juggernaut is a pro or a con, but I guess I think I'll rely on your advice.
Hello Misha, I'd like to ask you a question about Bare Knuckles.
I'm about to chose a set on pickups for my new custom made guitar and I think Bare Knuckles will do more than excellent on it, but I'm not sure about what model to chose.
I mean, I like really heavy and djenty chugs and rythms, but I'd like my sound to be also versatile and dynamic, without losing power and attack. I have to chose between Aftermath, Warpigs, Painkiller aaaand Juggernaut. Could You please help me out? Thanks a lot.
So...it's the Aftermath, but without the compression and a bit more alnico-ish "sing" to it?
I'm sure, I'd get the Djuggernauts anyway. I want to get a guitar build for me and the goal is to get as much versatility as possible. I want to be able to play Djent and all sorts of heavy music now and I still want to be able to play this guitar, if, in 30 years I decide to play Jazz, Blues or whatever
From what I've heard in this video, the Juggs seem to deliver just what I look for.
Clever Misha, Zero playing in the background.
To be fair, I'm not sure if it needs it yet; we recorded this on it and it sounds pretty tasty, even through an 80 watt and Podfarm ; watch?v=NXstL_EHYNQ
