  • Grant Lee Buffalo cover "We've Only Just Begun" original done by the Carpenters .If I Were A Carpenter is a tribute album to The Carpenters released in 1994. It featured alternative rock bands covering the songs of Richard and Karen Carpenter. The cover featured a cartoon-like drawing of Richard and Karen listening to an LP album against an orange background.

This brings back bittersweet memories. The mid 90's were a magical time.

This should have been issued as a single from the album. Grant Lee Buffalo really do this song justice. :)

Anyone who listens to this should really pick up Grant Lee Buffalo's album "Mighty Joe Moon." It is one of the greatest albums of all time in my opinion. Give it a listen all the way through a couple of times, and you'll be playing the rest of your life!

Agreed. THE best cover on this album. Sidenote: when Grant Lee Buffalo was starting to break out in the mid 90s, REM asked them to open for them on their "Monster" tour. GLB turned them down due to another commitment. Michael Stipe was so impressed that when they became available they joined REM on tour. Says a lot about a band that turned down a HUGE band like REM to honor a commitment that wouldn't have brought them the exposure they got with REM.

That's a major second interval. A pretty usage of it here.

I've been listening to this whole album, and this is definitely the best cover on it. The others seem to do little more than putting a fuzzy indie sound on it and shouting the lyrics (probably because no-one else can get anywhere near KC's voice). This one strikes the perfect balance of the original Carpenters sound and the artists' own style, and just sounds more affectionate towards the original song. Great vocal with some clever nods to KC's inflection.

I think you might be confused with Matthew Sweet's LET ME BE THE ONE that Richard Carpenter guested on....RC never did vocals for Grant Lee Buffalo's version of We've Only Just Begun...

Many of the covers on this album were really just parodies, done in the spooky, slow, Marilyn Manson/ Type O Negative” style . This was reverential to the source

poor Karen,,, I miss her voice so much. She really had the gift of an angels voice. btw did you know that Richard got this song from a commercial about home loans. It was written by Paul Williams.

Lots of Winslow Leach and Phoenix feel there. Anything Williams has written is actually by Leach (you think he's fiction?). Sad chords sometimes...

Amazing. This guy just blows me away. I'm a big rock fan, but I am not opposed to bands mixing it up and being outside the box once in a while and GLB does it beautifully here. I have albums Fuzzy, Mighty Joe Moon and Copperopolis. Any suggestions for other GLB albums/vids?
