    Hi everybody, thanks for watching - I realise the Yaris isn't the fastest, or the prettiest, or the coolest, but it's an example of a car you get because you need it, not because you want it. £650 for an advisory-free MOT and almost guaranteed transport until the heat death of the universe? Sounds alright to me!

      I have a 2004 one, a distress purchase. It's a neglected, bodged-up rotbox and I disagree regarding the Ford Ka - that did feel a better-made car. But... it's functional. At 131,000 miles it feels tired.

      @@HowardLeVert Thanks for watching, I always felt the Ka felt a little bit more sparse inside in comparison to the Yaris and a tad more rattly , although that latter point is obviously very dependant from car to car

    I passed my test in a 1.4 diesel and I liked it, I remember that despite having around 190,000 miles on it (yes really) it still felt ok, I used to drink with my instructor and did say to him that if he ever sold it I'd be interested. My first car ended up being a 1.2 corsa B and again, it just worked because simplicity, in the couple of years i owned it it cost £8 for an oil pressure switch outside of mot time, it also did 50mpg on a run. Theres a lot to be said for a basic car.

    I have a 2002 Echo - yes they were called that in Australia until around 2005 when the new model Yaris replaced it. I have the 1.3L manual 5 speed and it is fine cruising at 70mph all day long, in comfort and with reasonable fuel economy (40mpg or thereabouts). I have decided to hang onto mine for a few more years at least - its about to hit 200,000km and is still in good shape and is great when I hit the city. I'm even fitting cruise control! I bought it new with no options except aircon (essential in Australia), which still works just fine, like everything else apart from a failed door handle.

    Nice car, reliable. Cheap. I have version with AC, electrical windows, central remote locking and rear disc brakes. Also I have no fault codes on my Toyota Yaris 1.0L (2004), new spark plugs, new air filter, cleaned throttle budy, clean MAF sensor, also tested camshaft position sensor and checked ignition coils - but still have vibration on idle and some hesitation after fast/sharply pressing the gas pedal (hesitation from idle to 1500-2000 rpm, like if the engine is choking), but if I give gas smoothly - the engine normally gains speed and power.... and has normal power from 2000 to 7000 rpm at all.

    First vie of your channel, i have to admire the car you are driving! I absolutely love the mk1 yaris the only vehicles i have driven that i liked more were the mk3 mondeo and the mk6/7 transit/tourneo.
    To be honest the only reason I bought a mk1 yaris was it was cheap and i needed a car fast, and to be honest i fell in love with it within the first couple of days!
    I have to admit to being blown away by how well it felt, both in performance and comfort (mine was a 1.3l ( i could do 39 mph in first gear) rhe speakers were quite good for base spec btw)
    My first was written off 8 days after a totally clean MOT (lets just say i wasnt happy!) I see so many still on the road going right back to the initial release (W reg i believe it was)
    I loved my yaris so much that when the insurance paid out i traveled 150 miles to get another one.
    The MK1 yaris is one of the most fun cars to drive, if it is well maintained the hold the road really well.
    I have never owned a more reliable and easy to work on vehicle. I would buy a MK1 yaris over almost ANY other car made in the last 30 years!
    When it was written off it had 145000 miles on the clock and was as good as the day it left the factory.

    It's a true work horse, not pretty but always there ready to serve.
    Had a first edition 1.3 liter with 86 hp. The steering was shaking like mad as soon as I was past 110 km/h.
    Bought it with 220.000 on board, drove it for 4 years and sold it with 290.000 km, still running.
    And guess what, bought a younger one from 2004 with 168.000 km and already drove it to 230.000 with only the water pump changed.
    Treat her with an oil and a filter every 10.000 km and she will not let you down.
    By the way, the back seat on the one from 04 it slides and tilts just like the new hyundai Inster!

    @6:26 Yeah, dude, and the Japanese have analog gauge, too.
    @6:44 The most exquisite version is the 1.5 TS Turbo, a limited edition. The normal 1.5 TS is fairly common and affordable, too, even though it has only 106 horsepower and 120mph top speed. You can add supercharger kits and turbo charger kits to your liking, though.
    @7:46 AC and electric windows would have been a great addition, because it is a Toyota after all.

    I have the base model from 2002 (it doesn't have power steering). It will not die!
    I've had it for 10 years, and it just goes on and on (currently on 115k). I keep saying that once it has a large MOT fail I'll get rid of it. I've replaced a few bits and pieces, but not much. I service it every year, and because the engine is tiny it is super easy to work on.

      You know what, it's grown on me even more since the video, there's something great about a simple, dependable car. May as well do a bit of preventative maintenance (lanoguard and cavity wax) if that keeps it on the road for a few more years, it'll probably be rot which eventually kills it. Thanks for watching.

    Great little video! was wondering about the equipment you use to film and record audio?

    • @CaiKeys
      @CaiKeys  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks! I use a gopro hero 10 Black for pretty much all of the filming - it's a surprisingly versatile thing and I never really use my bridge camera now. Only downside is you can't really zoom in too far without losing quality, and macro shots can be a bit difficult, so my older Canon bridge camera comes into play. I've not got the model number in my head but it's nothing exceptional at all.
      As for audio, I use a TASCAM DR-10C with a Sennheiser ME-2 Lav mic. It records onto an SD card, which is then synced up in editing. Editing is done in Sony Vegas - I hope to upgrade my kit soon but for just starting off, you can't really go wrong with that kit list!

    Just speculating here, but perhaps they didn't sell the digi dash in colder climates because the cold made the screen too laggy to be of use? Older LCD displays sometimes do have that issue.

    • @CaiKeys
      @CaiKeys  9 місяців тому +1

      That's what I was initially thinking, that the temp could cause issues with the digital display, but couldn't find anything to confirm or deny - another commenter said they had complaints about the dash so changed it in Canada, its a bit of a marmite feature admittedly.

      I could bore you rigid with Yaris talk. All that really goes wrong with them is cats fail, pattern ones are crap, backboxes rust through for fun. Sump can rust through as well. Our key was used so much (door as well as ignition) it ended up wearing away and could be pulled out while driving but replacements cost pennies just keep the old one for the immobiliser. Steering wheel never pointed straight despite tracking as tyres threw it off. I thought the k11 Micra was the last of its type but in reality this Yaris was. Nothing that came after was as basic, cheap and reliable whilst still really comfy. 3 cylinders got nothing on these 4 bangers for noise and smoothness. Yours is a proper Jap build as well. Production moved to France for the 03 facelift with only the tsports remaining in Japan.

      Don't get me wrong, there's 'better' cars available. But for the requirements I have, and for the urgency I needed the car, I reckon the price is about right. £650 post-covid for a working car with a long MOT is pretty respectable, I'd say?

      What would you get? I'm looking for sth cheap and nice as well

    • @CaiKeys
      @CaiKeys  9 місяців тому

      @@Kelo7 I don't think you can go too far wrong with a Yaris if you're looking for something cheap, dependable, and with good mpg. If you're on a budget, reliability should be your main deciding factor. Like I said in the video the driving dynamics aren't great but it's just a runaround.
      A rover 75 is probably the nicest cheap car you can get but there's a lot of bad ones about. Same as any car really. (I've got a review on that, too.)
      Getting something decent for under £1000 is difficult now. Sure, you can get more car for your money if you look around, but if you're not majorly fussed about driving dynamics then the Yaris is a good car, just watch for rust. Failing that, a VW 1.9TDI (Passat, A4, Octavia) is always good shout, pretty reliable things, and a bit nicer than a Yaris.
