Tom Clancy always looked like a Hell-raiser having a grand time. Rest in peace lads, and thanks for all the music!
When they sing this shanty, I can feel the blisters on my hands from the ropes! This inspired me to write me own Shanty!
can I hear it maybe?
or just read
beautiful , just beautiful.
My Father used to sing this when there was trouble brewing.it was a weather vein of sorts to his moods..Rest in peace Abba.I miss you.
I was lucky enough to see Tommy Makem shortly before he passed away playing with one of his sons. His voice was as rich and resonant as it was in the 70's and his stories- incredible! I was raised on this original line up, and, Man, there's nothing like 'em.
I grew Up with these lads listening to their music MUCH MORE then JUST On St. Patrick's Day! I'm 56... But UNTIL my Dad bought our FIRST "CHIEFTAINS" Album...
The Clancy Brothers and Irish Rovers WERE "IRISH MUSIC" For us!
THEN When Milwaukee's "IRISH FEST" Started FORTY FREAKIN' YEARS AGO THIS YEAR! THEN We got to see SO MANY GREAT Irish AND Scottish Music Acts and Performers and I've had the GREAT HONOR and PLEASURE to have gotten to be Friends with MANY of them!
MOST Notably... Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem.
My parents and I got to meet AND TALK and DRINK with Liam and Tommy at IRISH FEST of 1983 the year I graduated from High School! So THIS was the FIRST "IRISH FEST" I was LEGAL to DRINK AT! And Because since then I had learned how to play the "Irish Bodhran" drum and had been in several small groups AND sat in ALOT of "Sessions" and had gotten to Knowing SO MANY People from Irish Fest... I ALWAYS got invited to "Parties" at the "PARK EAST HOTEL" In down town Milwaukee which is where MOST of the Performers would be put up! We got to spend SUCH a Great and Fun Time with them that night!
THEN Fast Forward to Summer of 1987... and The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem had their VERY LAST time to Irish Fest together... It was ALL FOUR OF THEM! That was the Summer a year after my Mom passed away. I knew HOW SAD and Lonely my Dad was because "IRISH FEST" WAS the "WEEKEND OF FUN" that we ALL DID TOGETHER as a FAMILY! So when I found out that My Dad was NOT going to go...
I said, "DAD... THIS WEEKEND is TOTALLY ON ME! ALL OF IT! FOOD, DRINKS... ALL OF IT! Lets LIVE IT UP Like MOM would want us too?!" We even got my kind of... "STIFF" BROTHER to Join us! And we had SUCH A BLAST! Such a GREAT TIME and GREAT MEMORIES!
But the BEST was when, on the Saturday afternoon of the Fest... I ran into NONE OTHER then LIAM CLANCY! And as I had spent MANY a Crackin' Good Times with him and Tommy over the years since we had met them in '83...HE ASKED If We would ALL like to "Join Him and the Lads" at the Park East?!"
WE could NOT PASS THAT UP! And because My Dad could play the Harmonica VERY WELL and had played to ALL of the Clancy Brothers albums... He knew EVERY LAST SONG of theirs! So Of Course he had several stashed in my Bodhran Case!
So... that Saturday Night... after the Fest was done... we made our way over to the Park East... and I saw Liam and Tommy and they Hugged us and were SO GLAD we made it! They were VERY VERY Sad to know that Mom had passed away the year before and said, "Then THIS will be a Night in HER HONOR! We Will Sing and Drink and Laugh and Cry in her Memory!" THAT was just SO INCREDIBLE! :)...
We got some drinks at the main bar, then made our way to the sort of "First and a Half Floor" of the Front Lobby called the "Entertainment Level" and THERE THEY WERE! RIGHT where they Belonged!
In the Corner Snug... Dressed in their Aran Knit Sweaters and looking JUST Like one of their Album Covers! And as SOON as we got up there... Liam and Tommy had us come over to join them and Introductions were made all around and we took our seats and Did the STOUT and WHISKY BEGIN to FLOW! WOW!
And the MUSIC... WAS BEYOND AMAZING! The noticed How Well Both my Dad and I could play and then Liam asked my Dad if there was a song he wanted to do...
And I whispered in Dad's Ear "Dirty Old Town" which has a GREAT Harmonica part in it!" So he said, "How About Dirty Old Town?" and they all smiled and Tommy said "YES! GOOD ONE! Ok Lads... Let's do this!" And as SOON as Liam's SWEET Voice began with "I Saw my Love..." My Dad started in very sweet and soft and PERFECTLY On time and everyone Smiled And It was SIMPLY MAGIC!
THEN... "BIG TOM" Clancy Said.. "I know a GOOD ONE for THIS Lad here Pointing to me! And He Just OPENED UP those BIG LUNGS and Started...
"WHEN I WAS A LITTLE BOY... SO MY MOTHER TOLD ME TOME... " and "HAUL AWAY JOE" was sung TO and FOR ME! We Just ROSE the ROOF!
IT WAS LIKE... A DREAM! A GREAT, AWESOME MAGICAL, MUSICAL DREAM! We Drank And Sang and Laughed And Cried and did it ALL NIGHT LONG and WELL into the Wee Hours of the Morning! I THINK we stopped at about... Like About 3:30 or was it 4:30? I KNOW it was QUITE LATE or EARLY!
So Once the Pitchers, Bottles and Glasses were almost empty and our throats were sung RAW! {And we were QUITE "TIPSY with JOY" as they say?!}...
We said our Good Nights and Everyone HUGGED and Kissed and Hugged Again and it was JUST a FREAKIN' BEYOND AMAZING NIGHT!!!
BUT... I was NOT DONE! NOT UNTIL TWO MORE SONGS Were sung... "Will Ye Go Lassie Go" and "THE PARTING GLASS"! And So I Stood Up on a Chair with my LAST GLASS Of Stout and Did a TOAST To Mom... My Grand Pa and to my two Sister's that had also passed away Kathy in Feb. 1972 and Patty in Aug. 1985... and TO the CLANCY BROTHERS and TOMMY MAKEM for SUCH A ONCE in a LIFE TIME EVENING!!!
Then with Tears in my Eyes I began to sing "Will Ye Go Lassie Go" and then "THE PARTING GLASS"! And With tears in Everyone's Eyes... We Sang To the Honor and Memory of those who's Present... and to those that had passed! EVEN My BROTHER who did NOT often SING... Was SINGLING AS LOUD and STRONG as ANYONE!
YEP! I it's an EVENING I WILL NEVER EVER FORGET!
SO I ONCE AGAIN RAISE MY GLASS TO YOU LADS... THANKS FOR THE GREAT MUSIC and MEMORIES! YOU WILL ALWAYS LIVE IN MY HEART and NEVER EVER BE FORGOTTEN!!!
Please Take Care of Mom and Dad and Grand Pa and my Sisters for me... Til I can get there too! Make sure their Glasses are ALWAYS FULL And a Warm Snug to Huddle by! :(...
SLANTE!
I am blessed to live in a time that I may listen to Clancy and Makem.
I will explain why Liam Clancy has not aged in forty years.
He does what he loves. He cannot do otherwise. And in this way, he is immortal.
Haul away, Joe.
Absolutely brilliant! Wish I was at that hooley in heaven lads!!
I was born and grew up here in England (I'm 67) but amazingly I'd never heard of the Clancy's and Tommy M til I discovered them on youtube last year and have been a big fan ever since.
Other Irishmen and women have always been in the forefront of English TV for many years, so it's a tragedy that the Clancy's and Tommy never tried to make it big over here, I can only suppose they decided to make their fortune in America instead.
well yes, they made it big in the early 60s when the Folk revival came along.. and they settled there
How sad. I actually had the pleasure of being their body guard when they played around 1982. Great guys. At that time, they had their nephew Robbie O'Connel playing with them. Tom loved the beer, and Paddy loved the girls....LOL

"To me!"
Can't stop listening to this, harmonisation at it's best!!!
What a great group of lads. Wonderful music. R.I.P.
I just love Tom
Tom Clancy great character
This was my upbringing, right here.
Let's not forget the brilliant version by the Kingston Trio in their "Here we go again "album in 1959
god rest liam clancy
this music is the best for my night>>the clancy brother and tommy on tommy....you make the songs so sweet
The two Toms are enjoying themselves on this.
Waaaaay haul awaaaay!!! I love this
got here from The Finest Hours movie, Great movie!!
Proud to bear the surname Clancy
All these guys had incredible voices but Tom's was just tops.
My obsession with Sea shanties began here
All the great pieces of those Celtic Islands and so many are ruined by over-production, banal violin or flute sympathising-overlays. When will the musicians get it? That those best tunes are delivered raw? This warms my heart. Authentic.
@MacBloscaidh As a life long fan "The Clancy's" ... that's just my take on same and i do respect your opinion, anyhow... ..they are now having those mighty sessions up above ...I think "The Parting Glass" is the song that should be sung at every wake... God rest them all we shall never see their like's again ....
Liam Clancy was singin' this on No Direction home. It was only for maybe 20 seconds but I loved it so much I had to look it up and I find this! It's even better! All that gusto. XD
Hannah Lynne Great documentary!

They r great!!!! :)
wish a group of 4 could sing any song ...

@lars3939 go listen to four green feilds by tommy or any outher song from him and come back and say that again
Comp, I think they were talking about Tommy Makem (who's not even wearing his obligatory sweater), not Clancy. Tom Clancy always seemed to be the most passionate and boisterous of the group.
Real men
TIMMAH!
Ta'me!

I got here because of the Simpsons 🤣😂👍👋👏
Go ahead boys, sing another song.
TIMMEH

hard in what way?
I imagine they are referring to "hard as in "tough, manly, etc."
It's true he never aged at all till the day he died, fair play to him it wasn't from mindin himself!!! They had a great time. I always wonder did the south park boyos get Timmy from Tommy?? lol
timmah

Nice song but why is he calling out for Timmey on South Park? I'm not making fun, I love the clancy brothers, but I kept thinking about Timmy
Its actually "to-me" but "timmy" is how you sing it lol
one guy is slapping his guitar, so wrong xD >:P
Both Laim Clancy and Tommy Makem were the real' front men' of the group the rest were mere Wallpaper....
@covermethis1
