Trying Ube in the Philippines | The World's Most Colorful Root Veg
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 чер 2024
- Dig into the rich history and flavors of Ube, the world's most colorful root veg. In this video I'll be taking you on a journey around Manila, the capital of the Philippines, as I explore Ube in a bunch of different forms. I'll be trying Ube from hole in the wall bakeries and home kitchens to modern interpretations. By doing so, I’ll hopefully answer the question: "what on Earth is Ube?" Coz, it might be familiar to those in the Philippines, but perhaps not the rest of the world! Whether you're a food enthusiast or simply curious about Filipino culture, this video offers a great intro to a slice of South East Asian food heritage.
Keen on getting some Ube Halaya, head to Aling Rose's:

I've found my favourite form of Ube (Bibingka!). Anyone else have a favourite Ube snack?!
Ube ice cream is heavenly
Have you tried the Ube-Cheese Pandesal? 💜💜💜
@@carydum9356 not yet but I absolutely will 🤩
@@SashaPomeranian agreeeed 🤤
Try individually wrapped sugar coated soft ube candy. 🍬🍬 ❤❤
One of my missions in life…
Finally! A UA-camr who properly identifies Ube, eats actual Ube, and uses a picture of an actual Ube yam in their thumbnail.
I support anyone who does this. ❤
Haha! Thank you / Salamat 🙏
Thank you for Feauturing my Lola’s UBE (Aling Rose) 🙏🏻😊
Of course! They were so kind 🥰
In 1st grade (1991), I lived in the SF Bay Area, CA. There was only one existing Filipino bakery at the time. My mom got me my first Ube cake and drove 6 hours to get it. She did that every year until more Filipino bakeries started popping up. It’s wild to see Ube “trending” now because it was always part of my childhood in CA and significant in the Filipino community. But nothing beats going back to the motherland and having fresh ube treats back home 😊💜
Your Mother sounds like a hero! 🦸♀️ what a lovely memory 🥰
I LOVE UBE EVERYTHING SO DELICIOUS! Been to the Philippines 20 times from Seattle USA! We move there for good to open our Beach Resort Hotel and we’ll be sure to have UBE everything on our menus! 🏝️🏨🇵🇭
Oh wow! Good luck with the move 🤩 get in touch when you're over here!
@@FirstPiper Thanks! Will do! 🙏
9 out of 10 Ube flavored stuff in Philippines is just artificial flavor. Ube is not common.
this is the most informative ube video I've seen in a while. More than just glorifying its purple fanciness, you delved deep into its history and cultural importance.
That is a lovely thing to say. Thanks for the kind words!
It's everywhere now. I found ube cheesecake in a small bakery in Beaverton Oregon. It was next to a matcha cheesecake.
Wow! It really is getting global. I saw online that is been called the “flavour of 2024” 😮
I really love how you integrated yourself to go to public market instead of supermarkets to find ube. Another thing is you actually shared that we must buy bread and pastries from small bakery establishments and now you are promoting the very essence of the-way-of-the-FIlipino lifestyle! It's my first time to watch a video from your channel so you sir, deserved to be subscribed. Thanks for sharing Filipino culture!
This is such a lovely comment. I really appreciate it! Thanks for subscribing and I hope you like the future vids.
This guy really did his homework. Ube in the Philippines can be found in a lot food stores everyday all year round. It's a versatile food item, it has evolved in many ways of how its been used as an ingredient in cooking.
Aww thanks for the kind words. I really enjoyed learning about Ube so doing all the research is always kinda fun!
You should try Ube Champorado if you could find some, it's so delicious🤤✨
YOU LITERALLY KNOW EVERY INCH OF UBE’S HISTORY!!! You deserve an award 🏆 💜
Hahaha! I wish!
UBE IS THE NEW CHOCOLATE! I LOVE UBE!
🤩🤩🤩
Kudos on this well-researched video. It’s great to see an ube video from a foreigner that’s actually informative and not just clickbait.
I appreciate you watching! It was fun to put together 🙌
I think you're one of the few foreign vlogger who featured extensively our favorite culinary snack. Thank you for showcasing our love of ube! One of the best ube jam you can bought can be found in Baguio City. They're made by the nuns of Good Shepherd monastery in that city
Thanks for the kind words, Rix, and for the rec on Baguio. It was fun to make this!
this is a cool video format! i liked that you also sprinkled in bits and pieces of history and little details like varieties of ube, plus the vlog of you going around in local filipino establishments was also fun to watch. i hope you also focus on other food with the same format and make it longer since you’re good at explaining things well in a fun way that captures the audience’s attention. welcome to the philippines and i hope you enjoy living here!
This is kind content creator that features Pinoy stuff that I want!! They engage with people, Learn with people and many more! I hope you continue this and be successful UA-camr!
Glad to hear you enjoyed. Hopefully many more vids to come!
Sounds like we all need a bit more Ube in our lives. That colour is quite something!
Cool! Im new here! This is my new fav channel! Complete info! He properly search and tried what real ube is! Not some fake ube imitations. So good job!
Thank you! It was fun to make and do the research. I learnt tonnes as well
The purple rice cake or biko you got from Market Market has no ube in it. It is traditionally made with pirurutong, an heirloom variety of sticky rice with purple to black color but since it is rare and expensive, they are mostly made of regular sticky rice dyed with food color.
Thanks for the heads up. I had a feeling it might not have Ube, even though they said it was "ube sticky rice" 🤣😂
Been here my whole life and how crazy is it to learn about my country from an English guy. Happy to have stumbled upon your channel before you got big and I'm telling you, YOU WILL GET BIG! Great video!
Salamat! 🙏🏼
Because you Flips love foreign validation unless validated by the foreigner you will pretty much wont mind and disinterested so when you see a foreigner posted about something pocal you check it out then boom Penoy pride feeling. 😂
Want to know more unique things? check out about local Philippine deer and a unique breed of dog from the Philippines its not the aspin you know.
You got great content! Thank you for featuring the Ph culture.
They even had an ube festival here in Melbourne recently, in the biggest market of the southern hemisphere, Queen Victoria Market.
That sounds awesome! Great to see Ube being appreciated all over 🙌 🤩
Try the ube macapuno ice cream. That’s ube ice cream in its peak form.
that sounds delish!
I've been off the radar. Dude, I've followed you for years for your music. How did I not know you're in my country, the Philippines?! So happy to see you travelling again.
Thank you for re-visiting the channel. I'm focussing more on UA-cam this year so there'll be a lot more content to come!
This is probably the most informative content about UBE there is! Good job! Keep it up, very educational 👍
Thanks Kevin. I really appreciate the comment! 🥰
Learned something new today about Ube. I am a Filipino and I love Ube. I am now a new subscriber. :)
I like your Blog Very Informative. Ube Halaya is one of my favorite in special occasions like Christmas new year and fiesta.
Thanks for watching Jess. Glad you liked it!
Yeah right well research unlike that Andrew Fraser misleading content on Sisig!
Bigyan ninyo ng importansya ang ube, at ibang native fruits katulad ng manga, buko, santol, atis, guyabano, dahil million dollar business yan. Parang cocoa chocolate o matcha napaka popular. Pera ninyo iyan ube. Eat more plants and Less animals foods. Appreciate ninyo ang binigay sa inyo ng panginoon Hesus yung native plants, trees at plant foods na wala sa ibang bansa

Ube ice cream!!!!!!!!! That would be a treat and a great favorite.
👍👍
Engaging, professional, and enjoyable. Good job!
Thank you!
@ The First Piper - the purple sticky rice cake you had is not ube but really purple sticky rice. It's a variety of rice which is purple or black called "pirurutong" used to make those rice cakes or "puto Bumbong" usually sold during the Christmas season. It will really not taste like ube.
Thanks for pointing it out! Maybe that can be a topic for another vlog? Our different types of rice and its various forms from rice cakes to pinipig!
My mother, who died more than 2 decades ago used to make "Biko" (rice cake) with real ube. That was something. I have not seen anyone do that.
But they actually put ube powder on it to sharpen the color. Since the rice color is not too ube.
One of my favourite food of all times. There’s something about the purple colour on foods.
wow quality videos you deserve 100k followers
Wow, this is.a great content for Ube. Good job!🎉❤
This is the best UBE documentary, very entertaining and informative
You're too kind. Slamat!!
Ube flavored hopia is a must
Masarap!
Ube can actually grow really really big because they are grown for months and sometimes even a whole year. In Bohol, they have ube growing competitions and man they grow very very huge! The bright purple color is usually achieved by ube extracts and not really just the Ube halaya.
Oh interesting! I shall try and find it in Bohol!
Look at you with all of this ube goodness!!! Time for you to get your ube jam from Tamtanco's in Baguio City public market!!! Great job, Ross!!!
We'll get there one day. Nothing like some Highland Ube!
I'm Filipino and one of my favorite color since I was a child is purple because it reminds me of delicious ube dessets and also the color is cool to the eyes! When I ate Halo Halo I first eat ube on top of it. 🥰I loved ube in any form!
When in high school, there was a little resto that served ube frappe. So good ‼️
first time watcher here. really enjoyed the video! subscribed!
You missed out on trying the Ube Cake! Eating it is a slice of heaven. 😋
Once again OUTSTANDING
We also have purple rice which kind of look like black rice but its purple once cooked and its sticky like a sticky white rice. We also have purple corn. And other purple colored fruits like duhat and star apple, well just to share...
Well that was a hell of a research and history 😁. UBElicious 💜.
Fantastic video! 😍
I grow up eating Ube for our afternoon snack. Incorporated to ice cream, cakes, sticky rice cake snacks, halo-halo and made as halaya (with coconut milk).
Yummm! Masarap 🤤
Thank you for this video. I picked up new information. Ube halaya is my favorite... even had deep craving for it when I was pregnant so many years ago. 😊
Try Purple Yam cakes.. it's delicious & it is made of ube.
.....nicely done video, thank you for featuring Ube....one of the best food Filipino's treasure....
Excellent coverage.
Thank you for being a new and exciting ube fan!
Give me everything Ube!
Darker colored ube is grown wild and harvested in the mountains. I tried some of them when I was a kid when my lola bought some from the province. For me, it tastes better and has a much better color in dishes.
Very good content!! I loooovvveee ubeee
Thanks you bạn hiền chia sẻ video thật thú vị 👍
Making it an ice cream is indeed the very best way to enjoy ube!!!
Agreed!
@@FirstPiperI still prefer Ube Halaya has the More Natural Taste of ube as long as you use Carabao milk cuz Condense and evaporated milk are too over powering flavor and sweetness!
Always better with cheese in it.
Excellent video !!! ❤💕👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Summer is here !!! 🌞
I found my new favorite channel. Where have you been all this time?
Oh yeah! I miss Ube.
Its one of my favorite too.. Ube Halaya
I love your take on Filipino culture! New sub here!
Hope you make it big in YT .. Nice content!
Ube halaya is my favorite and ube jam in Baguio too.
Love your short documentary on Ube! ❤
Had to get to the bottom of it! Thank you!
So educational and im living for it!
I love suman flavored with ube. It's so good. You may try it.
Great video!
Ube ice cream is my favorite. I think it was magnolia brand that made me love it when i was like 6 or so. I love its coconuty and earth flavor and most of all, its aroma! More than color, i love ube for its smell. Now, im craving for ube ice cream! When it turns melty and soft, ugh.
Great video! Only thing missing is you did not visit an Ube farm. You should try next time, to see how it is cultivated ;)
Btw, you should try Ginataan Ube Bilo-bilo, to try it as a warm snack form.
I know right! I’d love to get to a farm to see it growing. Maybe one day!
Nice content you really dig deeper in our UBE 👍🏽 GOOD JOB. ❤
You have some quiet primary source right there, appreciate that you really did some digging since Ube is really a deep part of our culture. Love this content keep it up
Thanks for watching!
im sold!! already a subscriber!! more views to come!!
Just subscribed. I like your content bud. May your channel grow exponentially!
Great content!
I love your vlogs ❤ it’s really informative and done well 🫶🏼👏🏼
I love your content! 💜
Ube ice cream is my favorite, and my second is ube cake (the round birthday cake version or the log version are really good). Coming at third is Cebu's diced hopia ube, followed by empanada bread with ube filling, and Iloilo's piyaya with ube.
Mad edtiing skills man.. and vlog’s very informative too! Wish you all success on your vlog🇵🇭
Well researched video abouut UBE from a foreigner's perspective.. Well done..
I love Ube. They are hard to find them at Asian Supermarkets in California. Most of the time we find the Japanese Taro. It's very light purple not like the Ube which are dark purple color.
💗I love Ube! My mom was craving ube when she was pregnant with me, that's why it's my fave! How I miss it
😂😂😂
nice content, keep exploring❤❤❤
Thank you for doing research and covering the topic well. Short but concise 👍 Not many youtubers are able to identify the real ube, and some just don't bother knowing the culture behind the purple tuber at all. Great video man! Cheers!
the video is very well made so I'm subscribing!
I literally just ate "ube hopia" minutes after I found this video, you should consider trying one out!
That sounds so tasty!
great video👍🏻
Ube ice cream has always been my favorite next to Mango.
I like your comprehensive research
Was salivating watching your Ube video 😂
Ube one of the best flavor.... try Pandan Flavor also yum yum yum...
You should visit a place called "Tikew" in San Pablo City, Laguna.. You'll find long line of ube stalls there..
ufff yummyyy!
Omg, this video makes me crave ube!!! I’ll definitely buy some ube hopia later. 😅
1st on the list is The Ube Spread/Jam made by Good Shepherd Convent in Baguio City.
Try it and you'll see!
On it! Thanks for the rec
Soft ice cream 🍦 made from kalabaw milk is heavenly.
So is pastillas de leche made from kalabaw milk.
btw those purple egss are salted eggs, they're purple for distinguishing purposes
Hahaha thank you! I was just kidding about the eggs! 😂
Enjoy your adventure here in our country
Salamat Julius
It's nice that you went to Pasig City. That's my hometown, especially the old town Pasig.
A vlogger who done a good research 😊
Very educational video, Thank you. I love ube, specially ube halaya because It’s made of real ube and the process of making it is very tedious. Maraming salamat.
i stable upon this video and i am in love with you hahahaha and this is soooo well made and kinda short i wish its more of a ten minute video but anyway great video SUBSCRIBED!!!!
We can grow ube in our backyard back in our province. ☺️☺️
