So I've watched both of these and while good, some very notable games and endings I didn't see mentioned.
    1. Probably the greatest upset in college football history, lower division Appalachian State beats #2 Michigan with crazy ending
    2. Cal versus Stanford, the fans and band are on the field thinking it's over and one band member gets run over as the winning TD is scored. Referred to as "The Play"
    3. Doug Flutie's Hail Mary against Miami that clinched him winning the Heisman trophy. Referred to as "Hail Flutie"
    4. Kordell Stewart's - Colorado, Hail Mary against Michigan. Referred to as the "Miracle in Michigan"
    5. Ending of 2003 Miami - Ohio State national championship
    6. Ohio State - Purdue, just one game on Ohio State's crazy season to the National championship. Referred to as "Holy Buckeye"
    7. More game winning or missed FGs as time expires than can be named
    8. College games that go into 5-6 overtimes or more

The other thing to keep in mind about the bowl games: under 2% of college players go on to the NFL, for a lot of those guys this is the last game of organized football they'll ever play.

In regards to the TCU huge comeback vs Oregon, that was a bowl win.
After the regular season (usually 12 games), 2 teams in a conference play each other for a conference championship in early December.
In late Dec-Jan is a "bowl season" where 2 teams from different conferences (think different parts of America geographically) play each other in a "glorified exhibition" game, traveling to a neutral site (most are indoors or in the southern parts of America). I should say the games do count. The records, wins/loses, stats count, but it tends to have a more "teams get to finish on a high note" feel to it. The teams have to have at least 6 wins to qualify for an invite. TCU won one of these invite games.
Yeah, college football has a weird postseason setup. The major bowls (Top ranked team bowls) are the Rose, Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, Cotton and Peach bowls.
Two of those 6 major bowls are the semifinals of the playoff (Rose and Sugar this year). Then the winners play in the CFP Championship Game at another neutral site (Miami this year).
    Hope this makes some sense.

RGIII or Robert Griffin III that you saw in the green for Baylor. His story is rather tragic. He got in the NFL and did some interesting things but got hurt in a game. He was visibly injured and having trouble moving around. He's the type to fight through it for his team but eventually he talked to the coach about it. The coach, being a jerk, told him to continue playing, that it was his job to finish. He completely destroyed his knee a few plays later, tearing an ACL, MCL and LCL and doing further damage. He had already torn his MCL at least before that final play that tore the rest up. His running game was a good portion of his NFL talent and the coach destroyed that. He played more and is still in the league but he's a shell of his former self, still a solid arm but he can't put too much pressure on that leg.

In the LSU Tennessee game the qb did actually get them set after the coaches changed the package, going from a bigger goal line offense to a more spread offense. The players did a good job of getting where they needed to be or getting off the field considering what the coaches called. The call made the qb take extra time making sure his time was legally set and then went to see what the d was showing that's when the center hiked the ball. So really that play is on the center more than anyone.

I can give you some context about 8:48... because I was at that game. Tennessee is one of our biggest rivals and we had already blocked on field goal earlier in the game. We blocked a 2nd one; the one you saw, to win the game. We finished unbeaten and as the champs that year so it was a HUGE block. and I can tell you this; I could feel Bryant-Denny Stadium shaking under my feet when Cody blocked that kick. Easily one of the best moments of my life was being there to see and experience that.

glad i found your channel. I am a huge sports fan and love cfb as well as soccer (or football for u). There are actually quite a few similarities. First, the fans are insane in both and fiercely passionate about their teams. Second, there is a hierarchy in both sports. In CFB, you have teams like Alabama, Clemson, Ohio St, etc. who are always good and in the hunt, similar to Man U or Liverpool in England. Then you have underdogs, like Iowa St, who finished in the top 10 (out of 128 teams). They're similar to a team like West Ham so far this season. A lot of these games are upsets as well, so think of the clip of Iowa beating Michigan like Crystal Palace beating Man U this year. As I follow both sports and root for teams in each (Texas A&M fan since birth and Leicester City supporter since 2011) I hope this helps!

Just viewing this video today. To clarify the initial segment. If the runner is in-bounds and touches the end-zone pylon (orange in this video) it is considered a touchdown. Secondly, the Tennessee versus LSU match late in the video where it appears Tennessee has won. The referee has signalled a penalty for a substition violation by Tennessee and it appears they have 13 men on the field. LSU gets another attempt and they score. Sad way to lose the game. Cheers! Beesley - All the teams shown in this video are considered to be "Big" schools including of course, UCLA (and yes UCLA is more noted as a Basketball school). All schools which play football, fall under the umbrella of the NCAA organization and are designated to be classified by their sizes. First Division is the largest, followed by Second Division, etc. The schools also compete in what is called a Conference which is sort of a league. Most Schools compete in the Conference they've joined for a title, but they also compete out of the Conference for prestige, revenue and glory. Currently the best Conference in the country is the South East Conference (SEC). You will see its logo at the midfield in each conference game. Most National Titles have been awarded to SED schools recently. There are a few Independent 1st Division Schools that play anyone they wish to, notably, Notre Dame, Army, and Navy. Besides trying to win a Conference Title, schools classified as First Division Schools also compete for National Ranking and National Title. It is rare but sometimes a School will win the National Title but not win its Conference Title. This is due to the playing and winning of Out of Conference games. At the end of the College Football Season. Schools will compete in what is called "Bowl Games". Schools are invited to play in these prestigious Bowl by invitation as a reward fore playing well throughout the season. Two of the Bowl games will determine the Number 1, 2 nd 3 for the year. The Rankings that you noted on the screen were rankings made by Sporting News writers.

  • @danbaker300
    @danbaker300 3 роки тому +3

You're right on the records and rankings. I'll add a bit more about the bowl games in a separate comment. Some context for a few of the games:
1:23 The Bahamas Bowl is not a particularly prestigious bowl game, but it seems like every year there are one or two low-tier bowls that end up being wildly entertaining. This one is a good example of it. (Central Michigan decided to go for 2 and end the game immediately rather than kick the extra point to force overtime, and they failed and lost.) Multiple-lateral plays like the action you'd see in rugby are very rare except as a desperation move at the end of a game, but the successful ones are legendary.
2:13 Fun fact - this was the very next week after the Michigan State-Wisconsin clip in Part 1 that ended on a last-second MSU touchdown. Those were Wisconsin's only two losses of the season until the Rose Bowl.
2:30 On the play immediately before this, Ohio State (rather than kicking a field goal to tie and force a third OT) went for it on 4th and 1 and got the first down by an inch. If they had come up short, game over. (Michigan fans to this day will tell you that the ball should have been marked short of the first down line.) Both teams were fighting for a spot in the national playoff as well.
2:44 College overtime rules are quite a bit different than the NFL. Each team gets one possession with the ball starting at the opposing 25 yard line. If still tied after one possession each, another OT is played, but the teams switch order of possession, since knowing what the first team did and what you have to do to win or match it is an advantage. (Starting with the 3rd OT, teams cannot kick the extra point after a touchdown but must go for 2; this is to try to increase the chances the game will end. After a 7OT game a few years ago, they added another change: starting with the 5th OT, instead of a full possession, each team just attempts a 2-point conversion immediately.) Notre Dame had the first possession of OT and kicked a field goal; MSU had lost yards on their possession and would have had a fairly long field goal attempt to tie and force the second OT, and a miss would have ended the game.
3:06 The game was tied at 6 for most of the fourth quarter. Iowa kicked a field goal with about 3 minutes left to take a 9-6 lead. Michigan State picked up a big chunk of yards on a trick play (catch and lateral), then scored a touchdown (the first of the game by either team) with 1:37 to go. Iowa managed to go 70 yards for the winning score as time expired.
5:03 This completed one of the biggest comebacks in NCAA history (one point short of the record). A&M led 38-10 at halftime and extended the lead to 44-10 with 4 minutes left in the third quarter, then UCLA scored five touchdowns in a row to win it. UCLA isn't one of the major powerhouses in football - they have one national title, in 1954, and had a good run of success in the 1980s and 1990s, but haven't won a conference title since 1998. But they're usually at least decent.
5:36 This was before the national playoff expanded to four teams, so the system was slightly different at the time, but the Peach Bowl (Chik-Fil-A is the sponsor, but most fans ignore the sponsor names for the major bowls because tradition) is now one of the six top-tier bowls.
6:30 This was the championship game from the 2013 season. Auburn had just kicked a field goal to extend their lead to 24-20 with less than five minutes left in the game. This gave FSU their first lead since the first quarter. Auburn answered with a touchdown to regain the lead with 1:19 to go, but FSU scored again (the very next play shown in the video) and won.
7:00 This was one of the semifinals the next year (2014 season).
8:47 This was Alabama's only loss of the 2015 season, and the first time Ole Miss had ever beaten them in consecutive seasons.
9:10 Field goal blocks aren't common, but you'll see them every so often (particularly on long field goals where the kicker has to hit it fairly low to get enough distance). Sometimes they're even run back for touchdowns.
9:48 This was the 2015 season again, and this loss (Arkansas would later score on that drive, go for 2, and get it to win) actually kept Ole Miss from winning the SEC West Division over Alabama (who would end up winning the national championship).
12:18 It's somewhat common in 4th-and-short situations to line up, run the clock down, try to draw the opponents offside (which would give you enough yards for a first down), and call timeout just before you would get penalized for delay of game, then kick the ball. I'm not sure why the commentator was so surprised Arizona State decided to run a regular play, though; they're too far out for a comfortable field goal (would be about a 55-yard attempt) and a punt wouldn't gain that much field position.
17:11 It says the down and distance (here, "3rd & goal") to the right of the clock. Every network that broadcasts games has the scores, rankings, time left, and down & distance laid out slightly differently (and they often change the layout slightly from year to year as well), which can be annoying if you're not familiar with the sport and don't know where to look.
19:42 This one is relatively famous for a premature celebration - just before this play, the Kentucky players on the bench had dumped the Gatorade cooler over the head coach. And then ... they didn't win.
20:53 This is tied for the largest comeback in a bowl game at 31 points down. Oregon didn't score at all in the second half, and the teams traded touchdowns in the first OT and field goals in the second. The Alamo Bowl isn't one of the highest-prestige bowl games, but it's solidly in the second tier.
21:57 This was the Big Ten championship game from 2016.

The first one was a Bowl game. Bowl games are just extra games that get played after the season is over. There are a LOT of bowl games, and more keep cropping up every year. In order to be eligible to play in a bowl game, you have to have either won your conference, or have at least six wins. So basically, that's half of the teams. There are also bowl games that are part of the national playoffs and championships games.
No comment on the hideous Oregon uniforms? They're known for their horrible uniforms.

    • @danV3123
      @danV3123 3 роки тому

I'm by no means an Oregon fan or anything, but their uniforms and partnerships with Nike is sort of what re-made Oregon into a juggernaut there at the start of the last decade. It made people want to play for them, and then they got close to winning the national title twice in five years. YOU might think they're terrible, I might think they're terrible and gaudy looking, but fact is they sell like gang busters and makes the brand of Oregon football unique and attractive to 15-18 year old high school football prospects not just in the western US but nationally as well.
That said, them being in the PAC-12 is a hindrance, but that could be an entirely different discussion on its own.

Tennessee has been operating under a curse for almost 2 decades now. So here's a program that has been running since 1891 and has 6 national titles, 8 unclaimed[1] national titles, 16 conference chamionships, and 6 division titles. And then in 2008 they fire coach Philip Fulmer, who'd gotten them their last national championship in 1998 and several pretty good seasons since.
After Fulmer, was Lane Kiffin for all of one season, 2009, which ended up 7-6. He's in this video. He abandoned UT to coach USC (southern cal), a decision that had the fan base burning mattresses in the street.
After Kiffin, came Derek Dooley, for 2010-11. Yes, Dooley is in this video. He was fired with an overall win percentage of 0.417. Absolute joke of a coach.
After Dooley, came Butch Jones. 2013-2017, overall 0.557, and yes... he's in the video. Butch was a fair to middling coach but there were (solid) allegations of abusive behavior towards the players, just spiteful stuff in player management, and he pretty much lost the team in the locker room his last year and ran 4-6 with his assistant BRADY HOKE (inside joke[2]) losing the last two games of the season for us.
After Jones... Jeremy Pruitt, 2018-2020. He's NOT in this video, fired with a 0.457 percentage though most of that's due to the horrible 2020 covid season. He had promise. He also had, known or unknown, his defensive staff handing out favors and generally breaking the sh*t out of recruiting rules, which is convenient to discover at the end of a 3-7 season because he was fired pretty much on the spot after the last game, and the AD (Philip Fulmer, yes... see above, long story to this as well) retired to ostensibly let the college start from scratch.
And now we have UCF's former AD Danny White and UCF's former head coach Josh Huepel... Heupel? Spelling? The optimism is creeping in again, even though that voice in the collective backs of Vol fans heads is screaming "It's never going to work!"... I suppose we're gun shy now. But what can you do? Wear orange on game day and watch/listen, even if it's versus Alabama and will be a bloodbath for the forseeable future anyways.
[1] college football has had collections of non-sanctioned 'selectors' declaring national champions before. NCAA doesn't really care and the college didn't recognize them, but they were picked.
[2] Brady Hoke used to send single-syllable level text messages in all caps. Direct quote: "JOHN I HOPE YOU DO KNOW I WOULD LIKE TO BE YOUR HEAD FOOTBALL COACH I DO KNOW THE ENVIRONMENT WE LIVE IN AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE AT TENNESSEE!"

Most bowl games are sort of like your friendlies across the pond. It's just a way to reward a winning season with one more game against another team that had a winning season. After about a hundred years of just bowl games, there is now a playoff system, that puts the top 4 teams in a tournament. The playoff games are still called bowl games individually, however.

Bowl games are end-of-season games, usually (but not always) held in warm-weather destinations, that teams are invited to based on how well they did during the regular season. You generally have to have at least six wins (in 12, or occasionally 13 games), to be invited.
Invites to the top six games (called the New Year's Six, as these are all games that were traditionally played on New Year's Day, though now some of them are played before) are run by a selection committee; two of those six serve as semifinals (rotating each year) with the winners playing about 2 weeks later in the national championship game. The champions of the five "major" conferences, and at least one conference champion from the other five, are guaranteed invites to these games. They are:
    - the Rose Bowl, played near Los Angeles; when it isn't a semifinal, it always hosts a team from the Big Ten (major conference in the Upper Midwest) and Pac-12 (West Coast)
    - the Sugar Bowl, played in New Orleans; when it isn't a semifinal, it always hosts a team from the SEC (Southeast) and Big XII (Great Plains)
    - the Orange Bowl, played in Miami; when it isn't a semifinal, it always hosts a team from the ACC (East Coast)
    - the Cotton Bowl, played in Dallas
    - the Fiesta Bowl, played near Phoenix
    - the Peach Bowl, played in Atlanta
Below those games, each conference has contracts with various games that dictate who gets to pick first. The lower-tier bowls tend to have backup contracts with smaller conferences as well, in case their usual partners don't have enough eligible teams for them to get one. The Alamo Bowl (San Antonio), for instance, gets first pick of teams from the Big XII (after the New Year's Six) and second pick from the Pac-12. Sometimes the picks are kind of grouped together and decided as a whole; the Big Ten, for instance, has a clause that none of its contract bowls can have the same team back-to-back years. The Citrus (Orlando), Outback (Tampa Bay), and Holiday (San Diego) Bowls are the top tier for the Big Ten and decide together; then there's a second tier which varies a bit from year to year, and a third tier which rarely gets completely filled.

In 1A College Football (the highest level of play in the current set-up), most teams that had decent or better seasons end up in bowl games. There are 40-ish or so of them right now. If you win the bowl game, you are crowned champions of that bowl game and you get a trophy.

It's too bad the video quality is so poor in older clips. I can think of several plays from the 1970s,1980s, and 1990s that belong on such a compilation...
Doug Flutie's 1984 Hail Mary to beat Miami.
California's 1982 multiple lateral kick return to beat Stanford. Thinking the game was over, Stanford's band was on the field. The California player who scored, steamrolled a trombone player as he crossed the goal line.
1971 Nebraska vs Oklahoma. The two teams were easily the best in the country. Johnny Rogers's punt return for touchdown was one of the great moments in college football, and still is today.
The 1997 Missouri Miracle. Nebraska was undefeated and ranked #1. Missouri, playing their hearts out, had been leading the entire game. Nebraska scores the tying touchdown as time expires. The intended target gets hit, is knocked backwards, dropping the ball. As he was falling, the ball hit his feet, almost like Ibrahimovic doing a bicycle volley. A second Nebraska receiver dives and catches the ball. Nebraska wins in overtime and goes on to win the National Championship later that year.

You got the rankings right. There are 25 teams ranked (#1 is top team). There are 130 teams in FBS college football. In reality, I would argue the Top 12 to Top 20 teams are teams deserving of a ranking. But 25 teams must be ranked. After the Top 15 teams, the next 20 teams are about the same, interchangeable. But a Top 10 team losing is a huge win for the lower ranked team.

This is the perfect time for you to google/UA-cam "March Madness". It's all the same colleges except it's their basketball teams. It's a single elimination 64 team tournament (the basketball season started back in November so its the best 64). Millions upon millions of us fill out brackets predicting how it will play out. It's the most buzzed about sporting event (technically 2 weeks of games) in America because even people who know nothing about the colleges love to fill out the bracket and guess how games will turn out. You have everybody from basketball experts spending days analyzing their bracket picks to girls picking based on which team has the cooler mascot or uniform. You and your girl would fall right in the middle. Do some research or just pick your favorites and see which of you ends up with the better bracket.

the bahamas bowl was a non playoff bowl game. In college football, if you can get 6 or more wins you go to a bowl game. Some of the worse bowls like the liberty bowl or bahamas bowl dont really mean anything other than trophies and ego. But some of the bigger bowls like the rose bowl, orange bowl mean more.
Every year two bowls are selected to be the playoff bowls and if you win those you go to the national championship

Most bowls have conference tie-ins. Then other bowls have a random draw from the remaining bowl eligible teams. As for the independents. I know Notre Dame piggy backs off the ACC for bowl spots. And I know Liberty has several secondary bowl tie-ins if a bowl can't fulfill a conference tie-in if a team goes to either the "playoff" or has the honorary G5 team playing in a NY6 bowl. Not sure about New Mexico State, UMASS, Army, or UCONN

There's a bit of a gap between NFL and College League football in the sense of one is playing by contract (for money, fame, and pride) while the other is playing for passion (hope for an NFL contract, pride of the school, and love of the game.) There's definitely better college moments just due to the players knowing that if they mess up there, they've basically closed every door they've been busting their butts for for the last 8-15 years. NFL players just take a monetary hit but they know that they're still signed on to play for the company for so long and they'll be paid as long as they play.
I would also say I wish my university was featured in one of these, but it's become a kind of standard for the U of U to start playing in the last 6 minutes of the 4th, so these "miracle" plays are just standard for us. . . . Sad, but true.

One of the things that can make college sports more exciting than pro is the difference in player speed. In the NFL or NBA you have the best players playing at a very fast pace but since they are all the best players who are all fast they kind of look slow as you have nothing to compare them against on field (or court). In college you have elite players playing with average players so you can really see the speed of the elites. College ball LOOKs faster than pro even though it really is not.
