Heard this on the radio yesterday for the first time in a decade and the waves of nostalgia were so strong I felt like I was tripping. Love this song truly a great one.
This version is so cool and different that I can listen to this and Dr. Dog's cover back to back without getting irritated.
I too fell in love with the Dr Dog version and when I heard this original, I thought it was so abrasive! After listening to it again and again it has grown on me so much that I LOVE it! It's so full of fun and excitement-I can't help but dance! The Dr Dog version is slow and sultry and just as good, just a COMPLETELY different vibe. We should be celebrating the wonder that is music, that such different versions of one song can both be amazing and inspiring in their own ways. I LOVE MUSIC!

I think you have to listen to this song twice to really hear it. The first time, I was like "wtf"? Now the second time I'm tuned into whatever magic is happening here. It's funny how the brain works like that. I still like the dr. Dog one. But this has it's own great qualities and style

No. Sadly I didn’t hear this music until after 2020. The good news is that I listen to this era of indie music and honest to god it sounds like it came out in 2015 or so. So much of it sounds ahead of its time.

Okay. I just heard the cover version for the first time a few days ago despite this being released over a decade ago. Wow. I didn’t know this was the original and had no idea the video was this creative. I had to pause it to take it all in. Like something off America’s got talent or something.

Architecture is incredible. You really can't believe how great music is out there once you detach the umbilical cord of the radio. I saw them live in San Francisco with Yacht and Still Flying and I stood right underneath that chick. In fact, the bassist stood over me on the speaker and dripped sweat all over me! They are incredible. Look up their Pirate Babies-produced music video.
I feel the soul much more in this song than the Dr Dog version. This one really speaks to me.
this is up there with some of the soul guitar artists as most influential grooves that the impact and reach far outweighs how much pub/$ they see from it.

I really wasn't crazy about this album at first. It wasn't until after listening to it in the car for a while that I started to like it. It's a strangely soothing CD to sing (scream) along to - just pure silliness.

Stop hating on this song and its video. You may prefer Dr. Dog's version, but that doesn't mean this one is bad. This is the original song, full of vibrancy, creativity, and energy. In my opinion Dr. Dog's spin is a stereotypical dry, surfer sounding remake. Much less energy, much more pseudo passion. If you like it better, listen to it, but all of the derogatory comments are irritating.
This tune is magnificent! So much energy! The Dr Dog version is so very low key after this effort. I'm glad for people that like it, but it can't hold a candle to the original.

This is outrageous!!!
See, I respect people's right to like the cover better, but you need to realize that they're different. This version's instrumental is more melodic, especially with the steel drum that makes it feel a bit tropical, even. The video and song together give off this creativity vibe that I can dig. Dr Dog version is more tuned to mainstream audiences due to the fact that it's guitar heavy. The guitar in that version is slick and very well played, and replaces the artsy / indie feel of the "boom dadadada" in this version.
Tldr: Both versions are great, but other than lyrically (and even then, phrasing and timing are altered), are vastly different with their own vibes and groove.
It's incredible. Like western tribalism or something. Amazing.
