Unsure if many Americans know but the 3800 is a very common engine in Australia being fitted to the popular Commodore for many years. I have a 2003 Commodore with an Ecotec 3800, done 440,000 Kms, never missed a beat, just spoil it with good oil and filters and it runs like a Swiss watch. Am about to do the timing chain soon as I reckon the chain would be worn/stretched and the chain tensioner would be due for a change. Among the best engines ever produced.

Nice job. Just did my first CPS on my Buick Regal. Used a breaker bar and socket and bumped the engine to get the bolt out on the harmonic balancer. Wiggled the balancer as mentioned until I felt the key catch.

Thanks for the video. On my 2006 Grand Prix, there is a small cover held on by 2 - 10mm bolts on the front of the transmission which can be moved, to access the flywheel. Although you can't use a flywheel tool, you can use a large bladed screwdriver or pry bar to hold the flywheel, while you remove or torque the harmonic balancer bolt. It did require two people, one to hold the flywheel, the other to use a large breaker bar on the bolt.

Excellent video. Thanks so much for doing this. On my 2008 Grand Prix with 155K miles I am having to pull my timing cover off tomorrow to replace a gasket on it due to a antifreeze leak where the cover mates to the engine block and water jackets. What a pain for a leaky gasket but have to do since it is overheating and spraying antifreeze from it. Changing the water pump out while I am in there since I only want to do this job once. Your video on how to remove the harmonic balancer was very helpful as I have to pull it to remove the timing cover. Wish me luck!!!

Clifford Franklin I am having to do this with my 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix (V6 3800). I am trying to thoroughly research this before I get into the harmonic balancer. Do you have any tips or any big issues?
Also, did you have to drop the oil pan and remove anything else to get the timing chain cover off to replace the gasket?
Thank you so very much for any pointers.
      -Lucas

I had the same problem and had to do the same and also replaced the water pump a couple years ago. I remember pumping silicone into the bolt holes hoping to not have any leaks and i didn't. Now i have an oil leak either coming from the shaft seal or the oil pressure switch, or if i am lucky maybe i double gasketed the oil filter. I am 59 and not looking forward to pulling the balancer again. I never did ( knock on wood ) have a anti freeze leak after i put it all back together though so i guess i did something right. So two years later this oil leak started, hopefully it is something easy.

I have this 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT2 with the 3800 series 3 v6 engine, and I have an oil leak from the same area you’re working on in this video 💯 To attack possible causes, I change upper and lower intake gaskets, I changed the valve cover gaskets, but I’m still leaking oil! I’m certain my car is leaking from somewhere around that power steering fluid reservoir. Now, because I can’t afford to have a professional work on my car, I’m doing a lot of work on my car myself. I want to properly diagnose this car so I’m not doing unnecessary work!

Must also add I'm glad our Aussie Commodores have the 3800 mounted with "proper" orientation Ie NOT east-west like so many US cars I'm seeing. Commodores have tons of free space in front
of the engine, very easy to take of anything on the front of the engine. Don't have to jack up and take a wheel off either. :o)

Shaun, I'm in the middle of replacing a timing cover gasket. Any suggestions on how to get the cover to come off? Have all bolts removed.

I'm getting the RPM drop and the stalling issue which are common for CPS. I don't have a code or check engine light.
Shaun4BigBlocks, did you get a code of check engine light with your CPS?

Warning: Do not follow his advice to install harmonic balancer back using the oem 24mm bolt. u have to use 'installer' to pull it in properly. the gm3800 harmonic balancer is press fit type-If u ruin the crankshaft snout thread, it will be hell to repair the thread or buy a new crankshaft? u can make your own installer tool or borrow from Autozone. Some Yooutuber mechanics lead u down wrong path. google research first!
