I'll be the first to admit that my palette is NOT sophisticated. When someone asks me what I look for in a bourbon, my answer is always the same: "Nothing can be too sweet". So I'm not saying that these are NOT good bourbons, just that I don't like them. (and my experience has been that people starting out in bourbon don't like them either). Maybe next video, we'll do Alex's favorite and underrated bourbons! But until then, Buffalo Trace at 90 proof for $30 is pretty much the benchmark for people looking for bourbon with a sweet profile. Other great value low proof bourbons that I enjoy: Four Roses Yellow label, Green River, Woodford Double Oak, Angel's Envy ($40 in my area). Bourbon starts to get interesting at 100 proof: Early Times BiB, Heaven Hill BiB, Jack Daniels Bonded, James E Pepper Decanter. But I think the real experience is at 110 proof and above: Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Jack Daniels SBBP, Green River Full Proof. Recently, if I go somewhere that doesn't have a good bourbon selection or the pour prices are ridiculously high, I've started to order rye instead. A lot of great cheap options there!
@@alexanderlai9160 Yeah, the first thing I look for is the caramel sweetness. But as long as a whiskey takes me on a journey I’m not disappointed. I love getting halfway through a glass and suddenly finding a new flavor. I don’t know how that works chemically or biologically, but it reminds me that whiskey is a natural product and all those flavors come from an almost magical process involving the grains, wood, weather and time.
I will definitely say that Michter's 10 year bourbon is a good pour (if I'm not paying for it), but you have to admit that at $185 MSRP at 94.4 proof vs Stagg Jr $60 MSRP 125+ proof, and both are astronomically marked up on secondary in the same range and both impossible to find... but there is no world where I would grab the Michter's 10 over the Stagg Jr! Also, this is ONLY a bourbon tier list. My tastes go much cheaper in the rye department. And if I go to a bar that has ridiculously high prices, I find myself ordering a rye instead. And that would prob be Old Forester 100 rye.
@alexanderlai9160 You are correct. There are a lot of overhyped whiskeys out there. I don't like the Michters 10 prices at all, but I have paid for it at msrp. I have never found Stagg Jr even remotely close to msrp. $100 is the only time that I have purchased 2 of them. Cheapest that I've found. I understand the list. It's a great conversation to have.🥃
But I thought these were the bottles that the ultimate taters always recommend! When I got into bourbon only 3-4 years ago, the ultimate taters were telling everyone "Don't sleep on these bottles" and so I went out and bought them. My intention was not to insult anyone, just to say exactly what I would say, if I were talking with you in real life. I do chase the good bottles (at msrp), but i also buy everything at Angel's Envy and you should see my collection of finished bourbons. Whenever a youtuber complains that anything is too sweet, I instantly put it on my list to investigate!
Totally agree on the wild turkey. Russel’s is an A tier for value for me though.
