Bourbon Hunting in Louisville: Little Gems Everywhere
I recommend getting Kings County Distillers Cask Strength. It’s a Blantons SFTB rival for sure. I just licked it up last month visiting my brother in Baltimore. I am a so blown away from it and it’s at $102. I do have a case of store pick stagg and it doesn’t stand up to Kings County. new Riff 8 year is also amazing. I live in WA and don’t see many of these. Came back with many that I don’t ever see in the NW
Great Collection! I love the video.
I got a jd rye pick that was aged in the coy hill barrel house.
Must be in Ohio… In the last 2 weeks at my local kroger in Lexington. I’ve got a coy hill, a 2024 eagle rare 17, a 2024 George t Stagg, a Blantons straight from the barrel, and 2 stagg 24A’s… if I could post pics here, I’d show receipts.
🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️WHY ARE PEOPLE IN THE BOURBON GROUPS ALWAYS TRYING TO KILL A BOURBON WITH ANOTHER BOURBON 🙄it’s just plain SILLINESS, that’s what’s wrong in bourbon. Just let a brand be Great and move on to the next thing, and goofy followers are ALWAYS READY AND WILLING TO JUMP ON THE DUMB BAND WAGON !
What warehouse was this pulled from?
Barrel House 1-01, Barrel No 24-08895, Bottled 9/20/24.
Bought it last week, and it’s really good. I must say though I’ve got a 130 proof single barrel from the distillery that’s even better. SBBP and the rye from JD are easily some of the bests things on the shelves
Ok so funny enough I just tried this years coy hill at an evergreen liquors in lousiville, this pick and the 130 proof one I got from the distillery are better
I’ve tried 2 different Coy Hills and regular JDSBBP bourbon and ryes to me are better.
Where’s this at??
Yeah I often wondered the same.
Is it at Uncorked or Stadium. I need a little something like that in my life. It is the rye right?
@@RJR2222 no, regular whisky
That pick sounds amazing. Just as jwilli said, you should put it up against the rye pick. Cheers 🥃
I got an NC ABC pick at 135.4 proof and it's AWESOME
How is it compared to the Jack pick you did… I know it’s not Rye but is it as flavorful as the rye pick
Our pick is dark fruit and figs, this is more banana bread and nutty
@ I bought 4 of your picks… do you have a few more laying around? I have one left but it’s probably getting opened for thanksgiving 😂
It does not have as much flavor as the Bourbon Chronicles JD rye pick. That pick was blasting 200% in every category: Fruit, Sweet, Oak, Heat, Spice, and Long Finish. The Gallenstein's JD (bourbon/tn whiskey) pick has only two things: Sweet and luxurious texture. It comes off as the perfect dessert whiskey , like a special edition release where the 134.9 proof tastes 105, no sharp edges from nose to finish, and drinking it is like drinking honey. As with a lot of sweet whiskey, the finish is not long and the palette is not complex. But man, I would drink this any day of the week. If you're in the area, go get the Gallenstein's JD pick. This is fair warning to everyone, because when I see Tim in 2 weeks, I may walk off with a case. Or two. It really is that good. But if you ever complained that a whiskey was "too sweet" and complexity is your thing, than this is NOT the pick for you.
@ I’m in Florida 😂
I just found a 137 proof here in Florida
Oh damn, did you buy all of them?
@ no I got one and my buddy got the last one at Total Wine in Pensacola
@ what’s your next barrel pick
@@jwilli850 we are doing some research on Nashville Barrel Co. Also the goal is Russell’s but I haven’t had any luck securing a barrel
Blantons is $150 a bottle near me.
Great chronology of the event. Also hunting for that elusive EC barrel proof toasted barrel! Enjoy the samples from your boy!
Go to Uncorked in Covington, I think they have cases of that stuff.
the lottery is till on till Nov 30th to get Pappy Van Winkle - may be in Louisville - the bottles go up to $5k online!
Better grasp 💭 those Larceny BPs-- Fred Minnick luvs ❤ 'em , why shouldn't we?
What's up with all this insane bourbon 🥃 hunting?? It's WAY too overpriced, hard to find Bowman single barrel-- (forget about even seeing it) Weller green label 1.75 yrs. ago was $49!!!😮😢
Tomorrow marks my 2 year journey in whiskey and I have about the same amount of bottles as you. I'm interested in your top 3 4 roses recipes though. Cheers!
Although the recipe makes a difference, I actually think the barrel aging process determines the best bottles of Four Roses more than the recipe. I think each recipe has fantastic barrels and also mediocre ones. So unfortunately, it's just becomes a luck of the draw or word of mouth. I did the Four Roses 10 recipes tasting kit ($120) which is all of the recipes at 104 proof and prob 6-8 years. The top 3 in the blind for me was OESQ, OESO, and OESF. However, when I blinded my Single Barrel collection - barrel proof and ~10 years, my top 3 are OBSF, OBSK, and OESK, so go figure, right? On top of that, I have 3 different OESQ recipes, and they all taste quite different. I don't know what the best way is to pick a Four Roses single barrel, but let me take you through my current thinking process. There are 3 measures of age: actual age (years and months), proof (hotter environment produces higher proof), and level of the rickhouse (higher level has hotter temperatures - this is the second last number in the Four Roses code). If you want the best Four Roses single barrel, look for one that is 1) Greater than 120 proof 2) a "B" recipe, K's and Q's seem to be better than O's and V's 3) Higher age 4) Higher on the rickhouse floor. The top 2 recipes on my list are not coincidentally the highest proof, and my favorite recipe OBSF is 125 proof, 11y 1mo, and 5th fl (VW08-5E). The reason I say "B" recipe is I think the "B" recipes can tolerate higher proof before getting oaky more than the "E" recipes. But if you're looking for a fruity clean taste sweet with minimal oak (almost weller-like), then look for an "E" recipe (preferably K and Q), LOWER than 120 proof, and on the 1st or 2nd floor. I have an OESQ that is delicious at 105.2 10y 8 mo, and on the 1st floor. But I also have another OESQ that is 120.8 proof, 9Y 5m and fl 5 that is oak-y. Finally, regardless of the recipe, it's possible to have too much aging, so if you see a SB Barrel Strength that is greater than 125 proof, 11y and 6th fl, you're risking it may be too oak-y (I have an OBSO that could pass for a Booker's). So maybe you want something high in only 2 out of the 3 categories. However for the 100 proof single barrel, absolutely always go for the 6th floor. Anyways, that's my current theory.
This was the wrost Kroger drop I’ve ever been to. Didn’t get a wristband…
"I don't know why I am doing this to myself?" is the quote that describes much of my relationship with bourbon.
Was there with a bunch of friends at 4am and none of us got a wristband - total mess of an event
Yeah, if you wanted in a line you got shafted
I was there and got the second to last wristband. It was a giant shit show for sure. I feel you on what you are excited to open and drink. I had the chance to get the last king of kentucky but passed because it was like $365 and I knew I wouldn't drink at that price but the guy behind would have. Ended up getting a though GTS though :)
I got screwed. Last number was 970 and my number was 962 which put me in the back of the line 🫠
@ oh shoot that’s terrible luck! The last was like 970 something. Mine was 991.
Congrats!!
nice vid! congrats on the coy hill! FYI rarebird confirmed that the LL/ME barrels were not reject RR15 barrels, but they are older than typical RR10 barrels
Great video fellas! I would have been there if I was available.
OGD 16 🤔🫣👍💯😬
my coy hill is the same proof and it’s amazing, found mine for $80 on a shelf in a store🤟
I probably would have done that GTS bundle for $750 !!!
Yeah, tempting. Especially if the Russell’s is the “gobble” pick and not the bad “good spirits” pick
I stood there and thought about it for a minute.
I would have too.
No, that's too high.
Were those Bardstown Wheated bottles at Party Source? Been surprised I hadn't run into any of those yet.
I can't recall if Party Source had the Bardstown High Wheated (39% Wheat 106 proof) which I think is great. The bottle you saw in the video is actually a Party Town Bardstown Single Barrel! I looked at the bottle, but the barrel strength was the rye mashbill not the high wheated mashbill. And so because I didn't like the origin series rye mashbill, I decided to pass on the single barrel. If I ever see a SB of the High Wheated, I would def grab it. I also wasn't that impressed with the black label wheated (20% wheat 100 proof).
@ Thanks. I agree on the Origin high rye. But I did like the BIB. NKY is awash with Gallenstein picks right now!
Great video guys. I was there and bailed during the chaos.
Should’ve taken that Russel’s 15 over the current coy hill. Both are great but the 15 is special
Coy was $100 and Russell’s was $250 I believe
If the coy hill wasn't there, I would have gotten the Russell's 15. What annoyed me was that the Russell's 15 was diluted down to 117.2. If I'm going to pay $250 for a whiskey, I want to do my own diluting, thank you very much. At 130 proof and JD's sweet profile, I just knew that I would enjoy the coy hill more than the russell's 15 and it was $150 cheaper.
What a shitshow sounds about right. Driving at 0430 and the store opens at 0900 and you are too late! Value of time vs. value of cash I guess? Also, iHop and Subaru is not strong content for what you do. Thank god I was able to watch numerous commercials while you got to the pint.
what city are you guys hunting in?
It was northern KY around the Covington area
Hey my mom used to wake me up early to deliver news papers🤣
Yeah I was helping my mom, forgot to mention that.
@thebourbonchronicles hey I've been there man. That 2010 economy was something else lol.
1:52 police escort back to the car? Really? I wonder happened previously to have the police feel they need to escort folk back to their car.
I’ve seen it with Eagle Double Rare. However this time I didn’t see anyone escorted.
@ crazy!
What an awesome video Tim! Hi Alex 👋 I'm glad you three have a great story from the raffle. Alex is so generous about sharing his whiskey. One day I hope to return the favor two you three! Cheers 🥃 🥃🥃
Yeah right on!
Thanks, Jeff! I actually had fun, I know it was a mess, but I don't do many of these and I had no expectations, so I was pleasantly surprised! Even if I hadn't won anything, I came away the weekend with some good finds: OF SB Rye, JD SB Gallenstein's pick (that ended up being better than Coy!), Green River pick, Hedonism 2024 for $30 off, Knob Creek 12 for $57, Knob Creek Rye 7 for $30, and a BT for $23.
@alexanderlai9160 That is an amazing haul! I have been looking for the OF SB Rye for some time now, but if I find it they want between $250-350. Congratulations on some great bottles. 🥃
@@jeffkastl1290 I think the OFSB rye is becoming much more available, just keep looking. 2 months ago, I found my first one in Michigan for $135. This past weekend, the OFSB rye was at the Kroger drop for $90 and not allocated so I bought it in addition to the Coy Hill. It's fantastic, but NOTHING beat our Bourbon Chronicles Jack Daniels SB Rye pick!
Pick me up one of those bardstown single barrels 😂 can't find it anywhere in ohio (and that green river single barrel)
Yeah Alex got of of those
Ahh now, don't worry-- Green River's gonna be at Food City's everywhere in awhile 😂
Did you ever choose what OFSB pick you are doing?
Not yet, we are on the waiting list. Not sure how much longer, maybe 6 months or more, who knows…
Look for the 115 + proof New Riff single barrel bottles, The BEST 👍💯😉, that KC 120 proof is awesome . CHEERS 🥃
No crash in Ohio. New allocated bourbon chasers are pouring into the market
I've been searching for a UA-cam channel that's in the Chicago area and you guys randomly popped up finally. I've been into whiskey for about a year and I don't have near The collection Alex does. Funny enough I hit up probably the same Costco and three Benny's that he goes to. Good to know it seems like there's a good community here in Chicago
Yeah I’ve been encouraging him to start his own channel!
Dude, it is deplorable to use that stuff like mouthwash. Oh my God, man.
That pick from evergreen of the NBC 7 year is so freakin good. The 8 is even better imo. Insanely delicious. I have them both. Fortunate to live here in the Louisville area.
We are thinking of doing a barrel pick with NBC next. They have 9 yr rye and that bourbon. Any suggestions for the serial numbers we should look for?
Which barrel # is your 8 year? If it is still there next week, I'll pick it up! Or look for it at their bar.
I wish he would gift me a stagg. Ive been trying to find a bottle for several years.
Not in PA it hasn’t
