I don't like the new system now. It puts the cart before the horse, has too limited people, too much sexism, too much fat and mom - shaming, plus, Nick and Rick Carter would get their head out of their asses, too much limit on feamale vocalists ages compared to men. Exactly! The reason Mariah is so widely loved as a vocalist is because besides having an incredible vocal range, she can back it with a gorgeous tone throughout her entire range. There's not a single part of her range where she sounds grating and harsh. And, most importantly, she has great musicality and taste over when to showcase her moments. She's amazing at toeing the line of over-singing where it's never overbearing, but just enough of runs, belting, transitions, and occasional whistle notes to be exciting and emotive, while weaving in some breathy, more subtle vocals for textural variety.

Hell, Billie Holiday barely had a full octave left at the end of her career, and she's considered one of the greatest singers of all time. For good reason too, because vocal range and power are just aspects of singing. It's why Xtina is hated by so many people. She can hit amazing notes, but she often struggles to convey nuance. It's also what makes Mariah so amazing. She uses her range like a box of paints, her musicality is unrivalled to the point that I really feel her voice is just an actual instrument stuck inside her.

You hit the nail on the head with this take! If we were to go solely by vocal range to decide who the greatest singers are, then Billie Holiday, would be far from the top. It just goes to show that it takes a lot more than vocal range to be a great emotive singer. Billie with only 1-2 octaves can carry so much soul, emotion, and wrap it all in a beautiful tone and powerful lyrics.
I agree with your take on Christina. I love her voice. She has one of the most amazing tones I've ever heard - just so gorgeous and rich. But the way she's so aggressive with her vocals, constantly over-singing so harshly at the extremes of her range as if she feels the need to remind us any chance she has: "Look! I can sing!" She does have some stellar moments though, of which I'm a fan.
I love what you said about Mariah and the paint analogy! Her 5-octave range is impressive technically, but what makes her an incredible *LISTENABLE* singer, is her musicality. She has amazing taste of when to showcase her moments. She's amazing at toeing the line of over-singing where it's never overbearing, but just enough of runs, belting, transitions, and occasional whistle notes to be exciting and emotive, while weaving in some breathy, more subtle vocals for textural variety and complex background layering. And there's not a single area of her range that doesn't sound pleasant because she has a beautiful tone to back up her range.

WORD. But it also depends on genre. Range and vocal prowess/power are literally the LEAST important aspects of jazz singing. Billie is one of my jazz idols and in terms of sheer ability to express emotion using the voice itself (and this is a skill and ability...emotion, voice, and music aren't mutually exclusive and those who say otherwise are idiots), Billie is where it's at. And while Mariah could do all that in her prime, she really is past that. She absolutely done damage to her voice and she's even admitted it herself.

Mariah's greatest advantage as a vocalist is her musicality. Where she places every little riff and run in perfect places and the intricate melodies she comes up with. That's why it's very rare for someone singing her songs to divert from the original melody of songs she wrote and sounding good because everything is already perfectly-placed. Add the fact that her tone is also naturally-beautiful even without all the acrobatics and boom. You have all the perfect ingredients.

    • @superninja6481
      @superninja6481 Рік тому +4

Agreed! Tone and musicality are more important! A wide vocal range is great to have, but not enough to compensate for not having great tone and musicality. I find that people with very wide vocal ranges tend to over-sing as if they feel the need to prove that they can really sing. But some of the most effective singers who might not be as impressive technically, can do a lot more with a limited tool-set, because they've learned to make the most of the notes that do have. Obviously, if you have both - if you can back up an amazing range with a beautiful tone and great musicality, then you're really blessed! (Mariah immediately comes to mind)

Her ability to control her whistles, not even just riffs and runs, but even THE TEXTURE is something I’ve never been able to see someone else do. Her belts are like butter, her low notes root into your soul, her tone is so comforting and enjoyable. I think the best example for this theme i can think off is Ariana Grande and Normani.
I think both have a range that spends from like C3 to E7 which is like 4 octaves and 4 semitones, which is pretty impressive range but the difference in technique and overall control is really massive. I love both Ariana and Normani, but there's no doubt that Ariana completely slays Normani in absolutely everything, all registers, technique, control, musicality....
I think this is best example that big range doesn't guarantee a good singer. And i'm not saying Ariana is flawless cause she isn't and i'm not saying Normani can't sing which really isn't true cause Normani can sing beautifully, those are just pure facts.

Mariah swears she doesn’t know how many octaves she covers … but, I don’t know if I believe that. Her mom was classically trained, and trained Mariah early on. Mariah says herself how much time she spent working on her range .. but, she hasn’t ever taken 5 minutes to scale? I don’t know why she shies away from that question. Too much pressure, maybe .. trying to be modest .. idk

So...am I getting the implications incorrect? Are you insinuating that Mariah DOESN'T use her (let's face it:) superior vocal range properly? She's only mentioned and shown in the beginning...and it's usually during a negative comment...so, I ask you... Do you think Mariah has/has ever mastered her vocal range? (spoiler alert: This answer will directly be tied to your musical knowledge credibility) Truth be told, it doesn't take a Lamb to notice that your past vids, when Mariah is being compared, you rarely A) Give her respect amongst the 'Greats' and B) Don't share the right clips, only bad quality ones and then compare them to an amazing performance from another Trinity/Greats member. Again, if I'm taking the implications incorrectly, I apologize, today's been a day and a half for me. Either way, I find your vids entertaining, and I keep watching, if nothing else but to yell at my computer;)

@@aintnootherfan I apologize then:) I can only speak to my experience on your channel, and I hope other lambs read this and maybe give you a little bit of a break, because I DO believe you think she has talent...but the choice of clips (again, could be outta your control due to copyright), or maybe you just use inferior clips of parts of songs where there are ICONIC live options and then its compared to an amazing part of another artists live performance, it just seems like you include Mariah because she's considered one of the GOAT's, but use inferior clips to show she's not as good as others....I dunno...if you had to rank the Vocal Trinity, like no skipping around, literally naming 1 then 2..then 3...based on your channel and underhanded sleights at Mariah, I bet she's last out of those 3, right? Anywho, like. I said, I'll still be watching...and I get its all subjective (to a degree)...to use the beginning analogy in your video above : Mariah plays with the skill of someone with a small piano, but the options of a big piano. Or one that I've coined which describes her: The Speed of a Machine Gun and the accuracy of a sniper rifle (at times in her career). I didn't get that from the part of the video where you showed Mariah.
Love your love for music! Keep it up!

@@ThabangRejoiceSengani From the little I've heard from Tamar she can sang sang! In both they have great technique but use their voices in vastly different ways.Tamar is definitely the better vocalist, she's does more vocal acrobatics. I think the sisters suit the topic cause Toni sticks to their strengths vocally, and utilize her instrument to it's best capabilities. And Tamar is a more complex vocalist and the riskier one, I feel in some of her performances she pushes her voice to it's extremes which sometimes doesn't work out for her.

Someone finally said it. Range means nothing if you don't use it effectively or well.
Mariah was able to use her entire range insanely well. She used her great rich tones, control, power, agility, colours, dynamics, textures to create incredible vocals arrangements that are pleasing to listen to. She oversings on many records but do they sound that way? No. It's tastefully executed, including her whistles. Whistles are just piercing, slightly annoying high notes if they are not used well in the melody (like Mariah, Minnie, Chante...) or arrangement.
I think thats why people get annoyed with Christina, or why people think she has such a "big" voice but nothing to show for it (so to speak). We know she's gifted and has a wide range but she oversings ALL THE TIME. And the worst part? It sounds like oversinging and it gets annoying.
Like I said, Mariah, Beyoncé, Jhud....gospel singers etc do oversing sometimes but they execute it better to where is satisfying to hear.

I have one: Tamar Braxton(range and vocal acrobatics focused singing) and Toni Braxton( emotive and stylistic focused singing). Now, they're both sisters and were trained by their mother there's no question about their technique but they're vastly different when it comes to their singing. Tamar has a tendency to show her range by taking it to it's extremes and general over singing, this has cost her in some performances.
