Ben and GGBO/Crimson staff: The increase in the amount of luthiery videos available since the first GGBO is my favorite part. So much to learn from watching others create. Sincerely, thank you.
Ben has got so good at shooting these! His process is an absolute pleasure to watch! As someone who spent almost every moment of their childhood drawing, this is really enjoyable to watch how he puts pencil to wood! He’s got a great line!
How many people listen to what Ben's describing and say "What? That's just insane Ben, are you drunk?"... Then when he actually pulls it off (as he always does), sits there in stunned silence and total awe? It can't be just me... The man is a genius...
So far, I'm really impressed with Tim Sway's guitar building ethics. Using as much of the material as possible. Trying not to waste anything and using every single scrap of wood, etc in the build.
Looks like you are off to a good start. I have watched quite a few of your competitors videos, I'm glad I'm not a judge. The competition is going to be tough. Good luck Ben.
I love that the technique you used during the layout process reminded me of getting free hand tattoos, it's exactly what they would do. I am so excited for this build!!
Pretty shape. I’d love to see a throughbody or set or even bolt on centre and those beautiful wings hollowed out. Love the thinking behind the semi hidden control knobs. Super slick. Binding? Hells yes.
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars Thanks a lot Ben, I hope the superglue holds, but when I built a bow I had to repair a bit of epoxyed Ipé Wood and it held during steaming :)
Ben, I really like the shape! I enjoyed watching your design process. I can't wait to see where it goes. I've seen some of your competition and It's going to be interesting! Best of luck!
The more you were drawing the more It kept looking like a 50s car. Love it. A coworker recently gave me one of those pencils and I absolutely love it, as soon as he handed it to me I was immediately like " Ben at crimson talks highly of these" he looked at me funny and I think I need to buy a stockpile now😅
Love that design but when you were putting the binding on you had it flipped upside down and I thought it would look even cooler that way. Can’t wait to see it complete!
For your inner support structure you can put one on the inside of the piece that you are bending down to make the sound holes, that would give you the support you need in that area and should still let it function as a sound hole.
Hi Ben you could still have the Volume and Tone control’s on the side if you were to use wheel pots as you get under the pick guards of some arch tops.
For the idea bin: A guitar with interchangeable necks that don't require hardware to hold it in place. Just string tension and the adjustability that the truss rod would offer (or any alternative ways you might have in mind for a fast/secure way to achieve the same thing).
The shape is great and I dig the cutins and the direction you were going right up till you decided the binding was going into those cutins. I would like to see the binding just around the outside and treat the cut ins differently.
I use the same marking gauge for years but I've never thought about turning the head around to get into tighter corners. Sometimes life can be so simple.
Very 'life drawing class' on the pencil work. I look forward to the journey. This year's GGBO is proving to have some truly wonderfuls build and we are meeting some old friends, new skilled crafts people and some true eccentrics. Be well.
Ben, love your vids, have enjoyed them for years (since finding you while waiting for 3/4 to be born!). The sound holes remind me of one of Murray Kunn's guitars - he makes some lovely stuff, so that is meant to be a compliment. Of course the styling and total design will be completely different and uniquely yours. I like how you use the flat top and create depth, simple and definitely production friendly. Keep it up!!
Two things I just thought of... inset roller pots that you roll your finger across instead of the knobs on top, and on/off press buttons level with the top. Cleaner smooth top appearance. Yes? They also make on/off switches that match the pot/rollers.
@@CrimsonCustomGuitarsI've always had a love for the elegance of art deco and streamline moderne. The guitar is going to look fab, it's also got a bit of John Launtner about it.
ben really threw every synonym of "steampunk" at us hoping one of those word might miraculously end up a professional alternative for "vibe" we see you ben. the struggle is real and we feel you.
Could you still do the recessed control knobs idea by mounting the pots wherever you would like and then using gears to connect the pots to the recessed knobs? A wee bit of clockwork seems like the sort of thing you might enjoy...
I think your first sketch when you first started was way good. You had a small scoop in the lower horn... I was waiting for you to slim down that upper horn!
I just designed my very first guitar, thanks to you. It looks like a souped up Billy Bo Jupiter. Can’t wait to build it. Never built an electric 6 string before.
Ben, She should extend your curves from the top, along that the top. Then your bottom curve, where it meets the upper cutaways, extend them underneath and make that the bottom. Your curved lines on the top, taper at an angle to meet the bottom and then you'll have your side openings.
Been a huge fan since the beginning your are the reason I am building and learning kits and my goalnis to make my own... however I love the shape you have there would love one done with just dark stain and like brass wax
Morning.. I've been watching your videos for over a year.. Yours is one of the better channels I've seen, maybe because you do well at capturing your playfulness and creativity. Now.. My comment.. When you were sketching out, and "have it" I could almost hear "dammit", as the shape drawn resembles Gumby. The upper bout has that shape, kind of. Thanks for the builds.
At 7:35, the little circles you put on make me think youre going to maybe make the the volume/ tone control wheels poking out there under the main area where the pickups are, kind of like a Jaguar. Larger wheels like that would be soo cool instead of the normal knobs on there, especially if they contrast wirh the colour of the body Looking forward to seeing where it goes
Ben, I do love watching you work but for the love of all things, acetone is a solvent. It doesn't melt anything (unless you light it) it dissolves them!! 😁👍
This looks promising Ben. Who knows, maybe one day you could do this for a living!?
He could call his Luthiery "Deep Think With Finger on Lips Guitars"
I’m not sure he’s qualified…
I agree, but Ben's not very good at it just yet.
If he did then he’d have an excuse to buy tools
After this and last year I’m starting to thing Crimson’s motto has become “we can make it lighter” haha.
makes you wonder about balance though
Working on the world's first playable air guitar!

Wondering if you're participating Mr. Angove?

What a beautiful shape. That shape in a solid body with P90s might be the best guitar ever.
This body shape deserves soap bar P90’s.
Totally agree!!
I want Jazzmaster pups
Cant wait for the “I’m going to build a guitar out of this jug of water, 4 tooth picks and a roll of dimes” video 🤣😂
Do you mean a McGyver guitar?
Ben has got so good at shooting these!

As someone who spent almost every moment of their childhood drawing, this is really enjoyable to watch how he puts pencil to wood!
He’s got a great line!
Yeah, a great line between genius and Insanity. 😉
14:55, that look, that double handed, silent point and that satisfied grin
THAT'S why I'm here
MOAR PLZ!
This is Ben's idea of a "smoking jacket" guitar. Something classy while entertaining in comfort. I look forward to it being finished.
I am absolutely in love with this shape. It makes me feel a calm and a peace when I look at it. It flows so well. I hope I can bid on this and win.

The binding just brought the body shape all together! I really like the shape.
All I am going to say is, "Thank you Ben" this is sweet.
Reminds me of a cross between the Jeff Senn Model One and the Framus Panthera 2. Looks awesome
At 10:20 I have to say I see Gumbys head impaled into a pitcher plant.
Love it. ✌
So far, I'm really impressed with Tim Sway's guitar building ethics. Using as much of the material as possible. Trying not to waste anything and using every single scrap of wood, etc in the build.
An interesting notion here with Ben's thinking - if you just leave a mass of timber out in the first place, there is less waste...
@@ianb4801 Ben's entry for ggbo 2022 - an air guitar 🤔😉
The bent sides with knobs flush mounted to the top and still have the effect you wanted.
Really like the shape. You're right, it always looks bigger before you cut it out!
It’s like you’ve stolen my shape! 😂. Just missing a wave 🌊 on the top horn!
Well, I thought about Tchiks one piece Cherry Lady but you're right too 🤣
@@davedavem you never know! 😂
Offsets often end up with similar shapes, if they are done well. This reminds me of the toronado minus the bulge where the bottom horn would be.
Minute 14:05. The grain of that wood cannot be so perfect.
The 2020 is by far my favourite of Ben's builds, and imo the most interesting design to me
I agree, I thought that was a most ingenious method of construction and I'm glad the idea's being used again.
Looks like you are off to a good start. I have watched quite a few of your competitors videos, I'm glad I'm not a judge. The competition is going to be tough. Good luck Ben.
I really wasn't convinced on the shape... until you held it like a guitar. Then it just clicked, this is going to be something very clever.
I love that the technique you used during the layout process reminded me of getting free hand tattoos, it's exactly what they would do. I am so excited for this build!!

Ben you made me pull the trigger
Already built my first kit and will soon order a custom kit from crimson! Thank u for all youve done for us!
You could steam the wings to bend them as much as you'd like, I guess that could work for making space for the volume pots.
To a certain extent yes, the pots are a bit close in to the end of the cut though.. I'm going to give this some serious thought though. B
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars Thanks a lot Ben, I hope the superglue holds, but when I built a bow I had to repair a bit of epoxyed Ipé Wood and it held during steaming :)

So glad you chose to not steampunk another guitar, that body shape deserves to be built and shown off traditionally! Great eye Ben.
If you wanted to you could bend the supports for the inside part and set it inside toward the pickup side of the curves.
Bind with white!! Monochrome seems to be a favorite of lots of people, myself included 😁
My favorite medium for pencil has been wood by far. So forgiving!
You have to incorporate the concealed controls. The idea of side hidden controls will kick it into another level.

You have a steam bender! Sweep the top wings down to lay on the bottom, & use micro control pots.
Nevermind I caught you on the live stream lol.
Brilliant start Ben... very exciting design, and I love the conservational innovation of using less wood.
Absolutely amazing design. This should be the new offset standard.
Wow....I'm loving the design so far....if this is going to end up as a production model I definitely want to know.
