The production also felt monotonous to me first listen and was burnt out till 31 songs ended but in second listen on shuffle, this album grew on me so much that i can't listen to any other Taylor songs except this album 😅
It was just so overwhelming. I listened to the standard album for a few days and they really grew on me. I did the same thing with The Anthology and was able to appreciate it a lot more with time in between and now I can’t choose which I love more
31 songs straight through is very fatiguing on first listen. I have found it works much better as 2 albums or on shuffle too. Great album the more I listen.
I think you missed the whole concept behind the album. A concept that is dictated by "I can do it with a broken heart". She sings all the sadness and anger while a minimally happy melody plays in the background and she pretends to be fine, even though she is at rock bottom.
As someone going thru a breakup after 13 years, this album is everything! (13 years, no ring, no baby, naivety can really wreak havoc! Hence, the need for this album!!)
Down Bad breaks me. The way she compares the end of a relationship to being dropped back down to earth after being abducted by aliens, shown and different world then arriving back and being disoriented not knowing what happened b
GOD I'm so glad I found your comment. I've been saying forever that Down Bad lyrics are slept on because the beat and "fucks" take all the attention. The lyric "Staring at the sky, come back and pick me up" HURTS ME
I'm a massive swifty but I don't get why swifties have to obsess about who a song may or may not be about. Just enjoy the lyricism and art. Folklore proved it doesn't have to be about someone to be great.
It's definitely about Matty Healy. She knew him for a long time and they never connected until the breakup with Joe. Matty's 'wife' is most likely his drug habit. Her 'husband' is Joe. The part when Taylor and Post lie on the ground in a paper silhouette is a dead giveaway because lots of people talk about how Matty is known for lying in just that position while having conversations. That's what I've heard over and over again. 😎
As a long time fan of Matty's, to my knowledge, he has been clean of hard drugs for 5 years. He mentioned it last year during a concert and everyone cheered for him. As far as the position they are laying in, I believe it is a reference to part of The 1975's show last year. Matty was lying face to face with a naked silicone figure of himself in that exact position. He did it at almost every show. You can find images on Google and some videos here on UA-cam.
@@ssalas7374maybe he is clean of hard drugs, I don't know if you consider pills hard drugs, but she has a song that eludes to him trying to buy pills off of a friend of a friend of hers that ghosted him. in her song Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus She says, "you needed me but you needed drugs more and I couldn't watch it happen". so maybe he relapsed. 12:40 Jack antonoff is also a producer on 1989 (the original) and he only produced the songs from the Taylor’s version that he also did on the original + some vault tracks! Christopher Rowe tried recreating max martins sound not Jack!
yep. I knew this reaction screamed disaster from the very first minute. All the "omg, chills, omg, chills!" only added to the "sh!t storm" (😉) that ensued.
So… Unfortunately due to copyright issues, the second and third part of this reaction has been taken down from UA-cam. I’m pretty mad about it, but for now there’s not really anything we can do. Thanks for watching this though!
Hey Issac, always love your reactions :) I just wanted to correct you- Taylor has been using Christopher Rowe to do all her re-recordings. Jack has only been used for songs he actually produced originally and some of the vault tracks that were never released. Also, Shellback worked with Martin on the original release of 1989 and he did actually come back to help re-record Wildest Dreams along with Ryan Tedder and Imogen Heap on their original tracks.
Jack was on the original 1989 album, too. And the reason why max Martin isn't around too much in pop now is because he makes artists he works with give him writing credits even if he didn't participate in writing at all
I really wish that your friends (not sure, I didn’t catch their relation to you) wouldn’t bring up a man every single lyric that Taylor sings. Them bringing up a different guy every minute really took away from the lyricism and what story Taylor is telling in the songs. I loved your perspective especially since you point out lots of production elements I usually don’t hear the first time around.
Same, its kind of hilarious because it's actually an extremely hypocritical thing to do. Fans will always get defensive and angry when somebody says that Taylor only writes about breakups and men, but then they'll turn right around and only ever try to interpret her songs through their preconceived, surface level ideas about the men she dates. It's like, you can't have it both ways lmao. The men are not nearly as important to the stories and worlds she crafts within her songs as people seem to think.
I don't know there the name but the girl in black gets It!!! I like that she was looking at the album with the perspective that Taylor had a lot to write about so these songs aren't entirely about one person in particular
I absolutely love this video! Tks for putting it together :) a suggestion for next time: it would be interesting if the girls were more technical about their review instead of saying “it’s about matty/joe” every minute
15:17 this is Taylor’s signature sound. She first began with her album 1989, which she explained why she titled it the year after she was born because it was a collection of 80’s synth pop songs. Since then, every single one of her albums has an element of 80’s synth pop. It was extreme in lover, some hints in folklore and evermore, prominent in Midnights, and extreme in Tortured Poets.
The song Fortnight is (partly) about Tortured Poet, Sylvia Plath, who k*lled herself in 1963 after her exhusband left her for another woman (there are big references to this in the music video).
I think he’s right, Fortnight seems more metaphorical, covering themes that run throughout the album such as love, longing, wanting someone who’s not good for you, mental health etc. Fun reaction!
It's a fantastic album but it's all basically about Ratty apart from So Long London, Clara Bow, Who's afraid I'd little old me and of course The Alchemy which is about Travis. Healy really did a number on her 😭
This is the best possible group to do an album review. You have the singer, who will listen to and critique the performance, techniques, and melodies of the singing, which is one of the most important parts. You have the song writer who will listen to the lyrics, dissect meanings and intricacies. Then you have the producer, who will listen to the instruments, tone, presence, and skill of the song itself. The only person who’s missing if the Fan/Swiftie, who will review the song in context of the artist themselves, but I think they said the singer was also a fan too.
Jack Antonoff also produced 1989 (2014) with Max Martin, Shellback, Ryan Tedder and a few other producers, just so you know. Jack Antonoff only produced the same songs he initially was part of in 1989 (Taylor's Version), the rest were produced by Christopher Rowe, together with the returning Shellback, and Ryan Tedder.
I understand on first listen it might be hard to grab every detail but I think over time there’s so much perfection to both the production and writing on this album throughout that you really have to critically listen to hear
OK But... do you know that Jack Antonoff did NOT produced the Max Martin songs on 1989 TV???? She produces those tracks with Cristopher Rowe.... hehehe just saying.
24:29 this is a very common critique I’ve seen about the album. Like in every negative review I’ve seen about the album they said it blends too much together
That is so interesting! I completely disagree about My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys. I get lost in her voice and that’s what I hear most. I get that weird senses mix up where I actually see her voice in some way. Sometime when you’re listening to it, focus specifically on how her voice moves through different sounds. It became my favorite song after the first time I did that.
Isn't it soooo fun to bring down another talented woman??? Not every little piece of Taylor's music has to be about somebody, she literally is one of the best songwriters out there, and yet the only thing y'all can think about while listening to her is "Is this song about him or not?"
I think this is a concept almbum... so whenever it dosent go in the "logical" way, there is a meaning behind it, its done intentional... i also think this album is super cronological.... great reaction, cant wait for te rest
Soooo 1975 has a popular song called Chocolate as well - someone else pointed out that bars are lines in a song so if she said you ate 7 bars of chocolate - could be interpreted as you kicked butt and wrote 7 lines of his song ??? I’m not a music person so I can’t confirm this …. Anyone else interpret it this way ?? We know how Taylor loves her double Meanings
Desperately trying to pick out "who" every song might be about is a detriment to actually understanding the stories and metaphors she comes up with lol 😭 Like Fortnight is an incredibly obvious prologue to the narrative we go on to see unfold in the album, but if you're somebody who can't comprehend a song unless you can craft some specific narrative to fit a real life human being, maybe that doesn't seem as apparent to you. Genuinely I think that Taylor still always gets pegged as the "breakups and feelings" songwriter because fans refuse to analyze and interpret her songs through any lens outside of the specific men she has in her life. TTPD's story is brilliant and perfectly straightforward even if you have zero clue about her life story, and that's the true talent within her storytelling.
I AM DEAD. 💀 Jack Antonoff is NOT Ryan Adams. Ryan is the one who did his own take of 1989. Jack was in Fun. as well as Bleachers and has been producing with Taylor for a hot minute. Check 'em out. 😉
Taylor likes Ariana, she just started sharing the trailer for Wicked now that it’s available at Eras tour. She plays a song by GaGa…people just love the drama. MH was a guy from her early years so there is a history. She gets out of this long ass (6yrs) toxic relationship and he swoops in love bombs her already tortured heart, shows her off for attention, gets what he wants and then ghosted her. So slimy!! Anyway thanks for the reaction!
So I saw a theory that “Fortnight” is supposed to be this idea where it’s meant to take place in the future where a past relationship that was daunting on you feels like it didn’t last as long as it had felt when it was happening and you realize the other person moved on and is living a happier, better life than you and you’re jealous of their “happy spouse, happy house” life; hence the “my husband is cheating.. your wife waters flower” lines. SO GOOD!
Everyone is going for the 80s thing these days because Taylor put it as the norm with 1989, before that the pop was bubble gum, next year it was solidified with Carly Rae Jepsen, then The Weeknd, dua lipa, etc.
Hey Would love to see what you think about the single Come Back To Me by RM coming on 5.10! His second studio album Right Place Wrong Person is coming on 05.24!
Listen to the lyrics and stop talking over and assuming, down bad leans towards matt, surprisingly most of the "deep" songs seem to be about matt who she spun the block on... pause to discuss, you can't truly have an opinion when you aren't fully listening o the beat, the lyrics, vocal cadence... listen, pause, discuss, rinse repeat...this format is chaotic ...this presents like it's only to farm engagement

SO GOOD!
Another thing, Jack didn't produce the rerecords. Christopher Rowe did those that were not originally produced by Jack.
Poor Isaac have to hear the girls talk about Tay's past relationship, i know u just wanna hear the music. ❤
Yeyyy 🥳🥳🥳
Wooo!!!
oh im seated
20:39 I love this album but I keep hearing "They'll say I'm Nazi-fied Taco Bell".
GIVE ME PART 2 NOWW
Totally random but i think isaac is the most handsome man i ever seen. I have a HUGE CRUSH.
❤️
Actually no. It wasn't Jack who remade 1989. He did the vault tracks. Christopher Rowe produced the standard tracks on the album.
This would've been more enjoyable to just listen to Isaac review it.
Jack definitely worked on OG 1989 not just Max.
A fortnight is 14 days
Conan Gray mentioning? Now we need a video reaction
i don’t mean this in a bad way but please stick to solo reactions :/
"if its deep its about joe"
8:36- Charlie Puth? That's a signal to listen to his new single with Skz, 'Lose My Breath'
TTPD would be a such a good song, if there weren't this Charlie Puth shoutout and the tattoed Golden Retriever line!
As a Christian, i immediately got the sloppy wet kiss reference 😂 23:43

Why do people always talk about syn? How about the lyrics that T.S. wrote? I thought it was the main thing in the songs.
Hi! Can you please react to Come Back To Me by RM. The song is coming out this Friday, May 10th. RM is a rapper and a really amazing lyricist:)
