Lupins. Oh my goodness. They grow wild here in Nova Scotia, Canada. The highways here are lined with them. All different colours. I have them in my gardens as well. Good luck with them.
I like lupins, because they look like a flower out of a Dr. Suess book! And the fact that they will stretch toward the light even after picking is so Dr. Suess-ish!
Ive planted some next to my potatoes the lunpines look beautiful but they also keep the pests away from the potatoes and attract pollinators to my croft.
Thank you for the video! I’m in Colorado (clay soil) and mine always do well. I just drop the stalks that I deadhead in the bed and they will re-seed from that
Looking forward to watching. I got a great surprise a few weeks ago. One of my lupins self seeded and i see i have about 20 baby lupin plants 😁 and just today I see more popping up
Your lupines are absolutely gorgeous! Idk what it is about that structure, but I just LOVE that in a flower! Same as with snapdragons- I love how they are shaped, & how they get smaller towards the tip, & the colors open up gradually... idk I just love it! & you have some gorgeous photos of them also!
Thank you Sarah for sharing your knowledge another great seed starting method to try and your lupins from last year looked amazing. Good luck for lovely blooms again this year.🥰
I've never clicked Like on a video so fast! You definitely inspired me to grow lupine this year, and I collected some wild lupine seeds last year as well. They grow nicely here in Oregon, USA. I sowed them just a week ago and they sprouted beautifully. I can't wait to make flower bouquets of my own this year. Thank you Sarah!
Thanks for sharing your lupine seeding process with us. I have pretty great germination success winter sowing them. I will sow some more this weekend....They do not flower for me in the first year either.
I grew these from seed, and the flowers were small. Most didn’t bloom. But the plants had good vigor , so I’m hopeful they will come back.. FYI all I did was put the seeds in soil and I had great germination.
I have planted approximately 90 Lupine so far! Have many more to sow yet! They are Russell's lupine!! I might try different types next year as well! Good luck to all!
I love lupins but never realized they were used as a cut flower also. As soon as I say your last video I was thinking I'm going to grow a ton of lupins this year. I was never fussy about the pink ones but they look fantastic in your bouquets.
Why am I complicating my garden? Lupins grow like mad here (zone 3A!!) .. I have bare patches in my flower beds so, I should grow more Lupins, of course. Thank you for the inspiration.
I love Lupins! I recently saw an Acanthus hungaricus in a garden and mistook it for a Lupin. It looks really masculine and interesting. I dont know about vase life, but it is definitely a perennial.
Interesting to watch your Lupin sowing Sarah. I have mine germinating in a cool greenhouse. They are the ones used as a green manure but such a beautiful colour of pink and lilac blue. I did have problem with greenfly on them last year so will keep an eye out for ladybirds and send them in that direction 🐞🐞🐞
First year growing Lupine! So excited will they bloom this year? Started them a couple weeks ago. Thank you for sharing! New subscriber here! ❤ I hope to grow my fresh cut flowers this year!
Hi Sarah, thank you for all of your videos! I'm a flower farmer as well. I haven't grown these yet, but they do look so beautiful. Well done! I've heard of using beer for slug control through the gardener's workshop. I know she used to offer a slug trap that you pour it into. Lisa has so much valuable information on her website and she's all about education. Hope this helps, happy growing! 💐
I have winter sowed some a year ago here in zone 5….I transplanted them when they had several leaves into my garden…that year the just grew a little, only 2 plants came back this year, but very healthy….I think they will bloom….they say 1st year is they sleep, 2nd year they creep, third year they leap.
I'm so glad you did this video!!! After seeing your lupines from a previous video it made me want to grow them! How many stems do you get from one plant?
I really love lupins but I’m in constant battle with the slugs. I’ve never thought of using them as a cut flower - for some reason that seems so extravagant. Definitely going to grow more so I won’t mind sparing some for the vase
Ooh I bet that purple would go great with some "Echo Blue" & "Echo Blue Picotee" lisianthus! I grew those 2 varieties last year & they seem the same shade!
Sarah, I was wondering if you still had your worm farm and if so, how's it doing? Loved this video on lupins and am going to order me some seeds to try. Love all the gorgeous arrangements you create. You're so very talented. Good luck with this years growing season!!
Hi Jan, yes we are loving the worm farm, I have been looking at the vermicompost under the microscope today and we actually have plans to make it even bigger than it is now! Glad you enjoyed the video :)
I sew a lot of lupine last year in July (winter here) and they started growing nicely. After frostI planted them in my flower bed, now we are in summer and the still haven’t flowered…
Hello, I have a question. I wanted to plant lupins, but then realized that they prefer acid soil, do you have acid or alkaline one? Because yours are BEAUTIFUL 😍
I've not had much success with foxgloves in the last couple of years, something always happens to the plants over winter. Hopefully I will get a few this spring. I love the peachy colours!
@@bloomandgray Honestly last yr was the first mine actually survived the summer. I'm shocked they still look ok with the winter we've had. I did put a thick layer of mulch around them. Maybe that's made the difference.?
I live in Arizona which has full sun and is very hot in the summer in between the monsoons (heavy rain). I'm curious if you irrigate or water each plant? Do they need a lot of water? Thank you! :)
We have clay soil here, too! We would love to grow these, but haven't grown them yet! Definitely saw some slugs in our area as well, so we might use those pellets! Off subject, but Sarah do you suggest putting worm castings in a raised bed growing set up?
I wished I'd know about putting them in hot water, I got told to sand the shell of the seed, needless to say I did and took off quite a bit of skin on my finger and thumb, it worked but the hot water method seems alot better.
You can get 90 lupin band of nobles seeds for 99p at premier seeds direct. Chiltern seeds charge £2.65 for 61 seeds. Chiltern can be a bit overpriced. I’ve been getting whatever varieties of veg/flowers I can from premierseeds seeds for more than a decade now and great germination / quality. Seekay horticultural are similarly priced, similar quality too. Whenever I see something on chiltern I like, I double check if I can get it elsewhere for cheaper 😉
Is there a particular species? In Norway they are a ( loved by gardeners) pest, they very invasive, and are forbidden to sell seeds or grow, because they invade the habitat of wildflowers and they die out. I am going to sow a legal lupin, a eco green manure blue lupin, not as showy, but hopefully a nice filler at least.
1/4 of the way in, and I still don't have a clue about how to grow Lupines. I know how you feel about them, and that you once didn't like them, but now you do, and they bloomed in autumn, but I don't know what you did to grow them.
Hey, guess what, I wasn’t born a filmmaker, it takes time to learn how to make good videos. I’m a grower not a teacher, some people follow my videos because they like my journey, some people just want the info. Maybe some patience and thoughtfulness wouldn’t go amiss.
In my opinion lupines are not desirable as a cut flower. They attract aphids a lot and then you get them inside and on your good plants. Where I live in Atlantic Canada they are a beautiful wildflower and we look forward every spring to the flower show along our highways. But I put them in a flower garden and they reseeded prolifically.... seeds dropped in amongst other perennials... they have an extremely long ,strong taproot and thus are difficult to remove . So if one does want to grow them ,give them a space to themselves 😏
@@nowirehangers2815 i have no idea what you mean by I just grow things. No need for U to take offense I was just sharing some constructive feedback for her.

I may try some this fall. Currently in Central Texas we're having brutal heat, over 100F every day. Your lupines look dramatic as well as lovely.

It’s been a while since I had this field soil tested but when it was last tested in 2018 it was 6.9.

Those stems looked really strong. What spacing will you use? I always think they will be too space greedy for my allotment rows.
I think they’re 12 inches apart
What spacing will you plant them out in your bed? I followed your tutorial and have mine ready to go out but need advice on spacing..thx!

Beautiful! What is the apricot/orange flower @ 1:30 that kind of looks like a single zinnia?
It’s a geum, the variety is Mai Thai 🙂
I love Lupines as well! They're native here in the US. Did you use your own vermicompost already?!!
It’s not my own, I met a nice guy in the village nextdoor who was a worm breeder! He gave me a bag of vermicompost to try.
Do the have a good vase life ?
When your seeds are in a jar of water for 1 to 3 days is that kept in the dark or light?
Just in the light on the kitchen worktop 😁
Do you grow the lupin in fabric or mulch with out landscape fabric?
It’s in landscape fabric
Is your greenhouse heated? What are you night time lows right now?
No it’s not heated, low temps of below 5 degrees Celsius
Germinating some now.
do they cross polinate?
I’m nervous to transplant mine into bigger pots
They flowered weekly in the first year? This confused me slightly. I've just sown some and I'm wondering if they will flower this year or next?
‘Weakly’ you might get some small flowers 🌸
Are lupines cut & come again/branching? Or do they just send out 1 stem per plant?
OMG those deep purple are beautiful. Halloween hostess gift…just sayin 😊

Yes they suck the sap from the plant and it causes stunted growth and weakness.
