    I think many of us Americans don't realize just how good the lighter, smaller cc engined bikes are (personal opinion on that). No lack of the fun factor with this bike. Makes me wish that I had a bigger budget for another bike or two. Nice review and looking forward to hearing more and your long term experience with it TMF. Nicely done as always.

    Dont know why they didn't put the new dash in from the new Duke series :/ Would make the bike that bit more premium. The dash, in my opinion, makes the bike feel cheap and is very 'old school' in terms of the new age 'digital dash'.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 років тому +5

      Yes agreed - I guess they have had to keep something back for the 2018 model - what's the betting that'll have the TFT??

    • @zaks5433
      @zaks5433 7 років тому +2

      1990 the current dash looks cheap and nasty as well the shape of it. TFT is the way forward now

    • @mayxnkb
      @mayxnkb 7 років тому

      They'll have it in there when they update the RC series for 2018. I was going for an RC390 up until KTM decided to update the D390 and give it a host of features that this one doesn't get. Cheers :)

    • @SMU_3L
      @SMU_3L 7 років тому

      I have no preference of whether its TFT or not. But an updated dash is needed. An LCD dash would be fine too, its just not as premium as any other model in the line-up. Now would seem to be the best time as they have introduced it into the new small capacity Dukes, and have also re-vamped cosmetically the RC a bit, and changed the exhaust etc.

    Good to see you reviewing these bikes. They are very thorough reviews considering the big magazines and reviewers tend to do these bikes. This and the cbr500r are great starter bikes i loved both of these but went with the cbr. They are most underrated as a good solid everyday bike for commuting and touring bike. Plus insurance is pretty cheap too. kudos to you and KTM in getting this review done. Top work TMF!

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 років тому

      Thank you James - I love smaller capacity machines, so much fun to ride and you don't lose your licence (or worse) so readily....

    • @Pomoz7
      @Pomoz7 7 років тому

      I'm weeks away from having to make the same choice. I need TMF's Duke review to assist because I can't test drive either bike in Singapore. Nobody will let you - "not enough profit in it for us to have a demonstrator Sir'.
      Anyway, I love the Honda's build quality, but it is a big porker of a machine. It is 30kgs heavier than the the Duke. That must impact performance and fuel efficiency. They really have been lazy in designing the bike, there must be lots of scope to reduce weight without having to use expensive parts.

    • @sullybiker6520
      @sullybiker6520 7 років тому

      It's actually the same in the US. Triumph, BMW, and Ducati tend to provide demo bikes to the dealers, but you will not be able to ride one of the Japanese bikes outside of the demo days (which the Manufacturer fronts and provides bikes for).
      The CBR500R is an interesting bike. It's well made, but it's heavy as you say, and the engine isn't a lot of fun for a sport bike, compared to the very lively Ninja 300 and R3. The CB500F and X are much better platforms.

    • @jamespjcoombes
      @jamespjcoombes 7 років тому

      Possibly, i still get 76 uk MPG though so get well over 200 miles on a tank and it is heavy but i do touring on it and it makes it a little more easy to handle in the crosswinds.

    • @sullybiker6520
      @sullybiker6520 7 років тому

      The engine's insanely economical. I'd have one in a heartbeat, but here the cost is edging towards Ninja 650 / FZ07 territory (though I prefer faired bikes).

      Ps.. and my original 'KTMRC390 First Ride' review received a 'Best ever review on UA-cam' comment in 2014 so mine above is a real compliment to you mate! I wonder if you rate either the RC390 or the Duke over the other? I always thought they were mechanically pretty much the same bike. I always argued the RC390 was really comfortable. Wrist ache is more a question of riding technique. As you say the Duke is for town the RC390 is for race track or open road!

    Another UA-camr, Red Renna just bought one of those and she digs it. Seems from your first impression that it is a well sorted bike - KTM is another company that seems to be on a roll; so many nice bikes out there for all segments of the market. I love the way the frame looks in orange... and I don't even like orange. lol!

    I had one of these as a loaner for the day no more than a week ago when my T120 was in for service. Talk about being the opposite kind of bike - extremely light, fast as hell somehow and very smooth fuelling at low speeds compared to the snatchy T120. Only real downsides I could find in the short time I had it were the rubbish mirrors and it didn't feel very planted above 110 km/h or so - otherwise a great bike and insurance isn't higher than the T120 either which always is a bonus I suppose.
    Anyway keep up the great reviews. And yes I got my T120 AFTER you had your video on it - it's a great bike if you like that kind of thing :)

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 років тому

      Yes I love the Triumphs as you know - should be getting a T120 as a long term loaner within the next few months and I'm really looking forward to that (as previously I only rode it for about an hour....)

    Hi, TMF!
    What are your thoughts about buying the RC390 for second bike? I have, like yourself, a Speed Twin and looking for a bike that I can easily get in and out of my BLACK van. ;)
    I’ve had the RC125 earlier and I really liked the stiffness and handeling of that one. So therefore I’m thinking of the RC390..
    Curious what you might say..
    Best regards and thanks so much for all those lovely reviews!

    Needs updating in areas like the clocks but what a hoot to ride...I loved ripping through the countyside on one a while back. The new duke i'm riding is a big improvement in engine, suspension etc so no doubt things to come for the RC next year.

    I'm 6ft 4 and looking at smaller capacity sport bikes would this be an option? They look a bit to small but I don't really want a 600 or a litre bike. Just want something to learn on and have fun maybe do some touring. Guess I'll have to go test ride some when I've done my DAS.

      TheMissendenFlyer my main concerns with the 2017 Duke 390 is over heating and the close distance between the exhaust pipe to the rear shock has me worried that it'll damage it? is it a good bike in stop start traffic ? is it suitable for a 185cm rider? is it a fanny magnet? lol 😁 thanks in advance

    Cracking bike. I bought one last year. Got the 2015 for £3500 brand new. There are still a few about at that price. I prefer the old under the belly exhaust although the old mirrors are rubbish. I wonder if a power commander will improve the fueling at low revs. The first thing I did was swap out the 2015 seat for an aftermarket one. Sounds like they improved it for 2017 or that MrFlyer has a tougher bottom than me :)

      Sadly good roads around here are few and far between - best nearest road is A413 Aylesbury to Buckingham I reckon and then there are just odd good bits like the A4010 from Wendover to West Wycombe and then the A40 to Stokenchurch (all of which you'll recognise from my videos if you've seen many of them) but there's too much traffic to be proper fun - wouldn't hold your breath....good luck!

    Brought a new 2015 Duke from the shop maybe it was cursed but went back the next day coolant leak and constantly in and out the dealers with oil pressure problems and temperature problems ended up selling it back after 8months shame because when it worked it was a fun light little bike but too many issues for me to be going back to KTM any time soon.

  • @duncanblanchard334
    @duncanblanchard334 7 років тому

    Think I prefer the 390 duke, but as KTM sell loads of these in India etc I would be concerned about the heat issues. If the fan came on that quick in the UK, then it would be running full time in hotter climates, unless they are made to a different spec. Nice video, but I do prefer the old intro, just saying.......

    • @mayxnkb
      @mayxnkb 7 років тому

      The reason they sell loads in India is coz since it's manufactures here, the taxes and customs don't apply as they would to you. This one is about 3000 pounds here, compared to 5000+ in the UK. Plus yeah, the fan basically runs full time in the humid tropical conditions of India.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 років тому

  • @johnschlesinger2009
    @johnschlesinger2009 4 роки тому

    I have a 2015 one. Hate the dash - navigating with those two buttons is rubbish. The average speed indicator is a joke: I do a regular 30 mile trip in 40 mins or less, and the average always says 23 mph! The fuel guage is bad as well: it goes from two bars down from full to 2 up from empty in the space of about 6 miles. The mirrors are very good for learners, as they give a good view of what on most bikes are the blind spots (for which rear observation is needed). Fuel economy is brilliant - 60mpg plus for decently progressive riding. Steering lock is great for a sports bike. Despite these niggles, I love it - fitted an akra can, which looks good and, with a change in fuelling, gives a worthwhile performance boost.

    • @mostwanted192837465
      @mostwanted192837465 7 років тому

      Garth Watford the cbr has the mose usefull power. Its not my dream bike, the daytona 675 is. So im getting rid of it when i get my full license. I miss the really sporty ergonomics on the cbr but other than that it is the best out of the 3. The rc is a single cyl and the r3 lacks power. Those were the reasons to get the cbr, also the cbr sounds more like a proper bike.
