What I had the hardest time overcoming was not so much the cost of the practise materials but it was the cost of my free time. I did not have a lot of free time, so every time I wanted to practice I put all this pressure on myself to turn out a masterpiece because I really had to make that free time count. It took me a while to understand and realize (and your videos helped with that) that practising and learning is actually much more valuable than turning out a masterpiece. Because once you’ve mastered some thing you will turn out a masterpiece LOL. 😃👍🏻👏🏻

You mentioned using glass from a frame, which is what I do. I would recommend not even taking the glass out of the frame. With the frame, it's easier to handle and much less likely to break. Also, you can stick whatever colour paper you want in the frame to best show your paint.

Very well said!!!!. I just discovered “painting practice “ . It is everything you said and more. Because it is a “practice” it set you free from the burden of “producing “ a painting, and because it is a “practice “, you finally accept the mistakes, because it is a “practice “. Good job

Another thing you can use to practise on is wallpaper lining paper. Its thick and plain white, buy a role for around $7. To use it put a couple of coats of gesso on it, then you can have pieces of any size to use and its easy to store afterwards. It last for ages as well ;-)

To be willing to fail and to honour the effort are my most important take-away messages from this video. After trying out a dozen different YT channels by artists who teach painting, I have concluded that this is the best channel for beginners and intermediate painters. It has more breadth and more depth than any other channel, and the paint coach explains things clearly.
The emphasis on keeping it simple and focusing on getting plenty of practice, and being willing to fail again and again on the painint journey are truly important messages. This channel has changed my view of painting - I used to be frustrated and felt defeated because I could not figure out what I could do to improve my paintings. The messages from this and other videos have inspired me to stop worrying about the end results and just focus on experimenting and practising.
When one honours the effort and the process, one will truly enjoy the process and the journey - including all those little detours to try out whatever looks interesting to try out. The painter's journey is not about reaching the end of the journey; it's about the journey itself.

Advice zero : If you are suffering from depression (as quite a lot of artists) : get rid of depression and judgemental thoughts and make things. Just do and don't care. Then you erase and start over. Do again and again. And a few steps are good enough imo.

One thing I have noticed is that I believe the painting community is completely unaware of is the idea of painting the same thing over and over and over again. For years.
Musicians understand this though. Especially those trained from childhood using the Suzuki method. They are taught they must always go back and replay the same things they learned years ago and try to play it more beautifully.
The constant repetition of “review pieces” and scales and warm-ups is very much a mainstay for learning to play an instrument.
But painters do the opposite. They finish a painting to and then move on to the next. They don’t get the benefits of constant repetition.
I have a theory (and am enacting it in my own learning journey) that you should build a set of paintings that you learn to do in one sitting. Smaller pieces without the background fully painted in that you paint again and again. Like a warm up for a guitarist.
I think that the same learning mechanisms in the brain that work for music likely work for painting. But even if it’s extremely effective (just like for musicians) I see most painters rejecting the idea. After all…you don’t have to pay again and again to play your guitar. You do to paint the same painting again.
Better just buy cheap canvas panels in bulk I guess.

Thank you so much for this video! I get discouraged so easily, bc I was never taught that making mistakes was necessary in life. I try so hard to make myself believe mistakes are ok. After listening to you say that a bad painting is actually a good thing I feel more at ease and confident! Bc, I’m trying to do your pineapple still life, and I’m realizing how this painting is a bit out of my current league. So, my game plan is to do all the beginner tutorials on Patreon then come back to the pineapple still life. Thanks!! ❤

He is right about the videos that are on YT, no ones talks about their growth to becoming an 'artist.' Everything is already expected of you in 'art,' and even if you take a class and/or workshop, they do not give very good info, although they are supposed to be 'beginning courses,'.

The coupon (I know, is just a ploy to get traffic in the store or online but...) Thank's for your honesty and all of your effort to keep it (art) ALIVE.

I have got allot of cardboard from work so practice painting is not expensive for me. But i understand that many people struggle whit this. Its so sad that art materials are super expensive. Even for me wen i buy canvas panels and quality oil and acrylic paint. I don,t like to paint and practice on canvas. I practice now whit paints of Pebeo oil paint and acrylic paint. Its a super nice brand to practice whit. The oil tubes are 200 ml for less than 30 euro,s and the acrylic,s i get also from Pebeo they are under 8 euro,s. My brushes i got from a kind of a budget store in the netherlands and those are good inexpensive brushes to practice. I get 2 sets of 12 brushes for under 5 euro,s. They are 1,50,1,54 per set. I love you,re channel Paint Coach 😊👋🏾🖐🏾👍🏾

Very true about the bad paintings. In my house my bad paintings were named by my family: "The Exorcist woman" because the neck seems that is going to go around 360degrees, "the paranormal portrait", the "coloring book still life", and so on. I painted over them on how bad they were. Nevertheless, I appreciate that I at least tried, failed, and learned.

I taught at a studio where we'd buy 16 x 20 canvas boards and cut them into 8 x 10's w a razorknife. Same size as printer paper for photo references. Acrylic paint is cheaper although it has different properties from oil. Depends on what you're trying to accomplish with your practice. The teacher paintings that we would do alongside the students got painted over w gesso or white house paint and reused until the surface quality was too compromised. If you do this and manage to produce something you wanna keep make sure you glue the edges or the canvas may delaminate from the cardboard.
I feel like there's a certain level of proficiency you have to achieve before high quality materials will make a real difference in your painting. You can get there without spending too much

A late comment to an older post.......but what I have found made painting easier is cardboard...........any kind, but the best seems to be the packaging for frozen food. Maybe the coating has a vapor barrier or something. But I slap a couple coats of Gesso on it....two coats on front, one on back for warping. They I tape it to a board to paint studies. If it turns out good, I can always recreate it on a better surface.
And for a great glass palette....look for old microwaves. The glass turntables make a great palette.

    There is no spoon!
You talk a lot in your videos about honouring the process, and I have heard that a lot from others, and I think I have preached it myself. But I still want to produce something that is good and nice on the first try. Why go through all of those drafts if you can just bang out a master piece!? :P
But, there is no spoon. There is no finished product. If we expand our consciousness wide enough then the understanding of our reality dissolves. I know that is a disparate concept from what your were talking about, but I think it's a useful factor in confronting the process. Most of the work we do is washed away in time and the only remnants of it is the great art that is created on the back of those crappy pieces. But even those will dissipate in the future. So it is about creating beauty now. There might not be a spoon, but there is something we can be nourished with

Paris D Black I don’t clean my brushes to often. Instead I use this brush dip where I just dip my brushes in it and it keeps the paint wet until I paint next. It’s a life saver. If you don’t use the dip the clean as much as you can with paint thinner and paper towel then warm water and dish soap.

I kid you not. ROSS has by far the best deals for art supplies. Acrylic, oil and water paints. Got a easil for $14. Lots of brushes and also canvases. Really if it wasn't for Ross I would have never really started something iv been knowing, been being told I should doing and really something deep down I love. I loved it before I even started. I'm an artist, I have ADHD I'm 37y/o and I have finally gotten around to it. I had only paint 2 o 3 time before in school. 20yearz later my painting of an Aztec warrior still hanging in my elementary school! I'm proud of it and at the I nearly won an award for it. That was one of the first and last times I painted till now. I feel in this freedom that that I never had as a sketch artist /doodler. In the midst of a divorce (as I am in this moment) its just seemd like the right time to start. Yes I lose sleep over it, invent my own techniques.

Brilliant topic & thank you. I draw a lot, pencil, ink, charcoal etc. I know I need to practice, like music scales, to develop techniques I can take to making a picture. It all helps the hand-eye-material coordination. However as I explore painting, oil in particular, I don’t want to “waste” good materials, both for cost reasons as well as environmental ones. This video has helped me get some thoughts on getting over myself and getting painting. Thanks.

Your suggestion to start and practice with material that isn't precious resonates with me. I started painting 18 months ago. I do most of my practice paintings and value studies on gessoed cereal boxes. The cardboard is smooth and sturdy enough for my purpose. The gesso makes it workable. I can also do watercolor on the gesso if it's smooth.
For cheap brushe, i buy the cheap da vinci student grade. I often find brushes on the roadside. Same with canvases, tubes of paint, and pallettes i can reuse; since i live in a major city that is a world capital for art, this isn't an uncommon occurrence for artists to recycle their old material by tossing it outside. For paint, i but bulk dry pigment and a muller and glass and make my own paint.

I feel like it’s probably a matter of perspective, but can’t really explain it. I feel like I owe it to myself to keep painting and learning, but want to enjoy it more. Any suggestions??

    AI: "practice!?"
Awesome tips, thank you! . Im trying to discipline myself in drawing first, painting will be later.
I purchased all the cheap stuff to practice with. Just doodling spheres, cones, cylinders, cubes. It gives me so much confidence to just create whatever shape and depth i feel like.

I appreciate your helpful, practical words. maybe along similar thoughts...I've often thought how helpful it would be to me if more experienced painters showed some of their early efforts, even beginner paintings. Often I'll watch those 'experienced' folks, compare myself, then get discouraged. My thoughts for the day! fran in NM

Actually Blick’s stretched canvases and other substrates are generally higher quality and better prices than Michael’s from my experience. They also have a better selection of other specific things like paper palettes, etc. They’re worth checking out at least to check prices. You might be surprised

An artist friend advised me to use walnut oil to thin oil paint because it's inexpensive at the grocery store and Murphys oil soap to clean my brushes when I'm done. What do you yhink?

I really appreciate this video... but i would ask if you have any specific excercises to try... like you said materials arent free but time is valuable too. I paint finished stuff but i want to improve. So do you have any specific recommendations of painting excercises to do? Maybe something that focuses specifically on value? Or color relation? Please dont tell me to make a color wheel lol i understand color but how do i effectively practice using it?

I was once told by a tutor on a drawing class 'buy the best that you can afford to waste' It was good advice, pricey enough that it is decent quality, but not so expensive that I am counting out how many notes each squirt of paint cost.

It's so good to hear honest truths about the real painting process and every painting doesn't have to be a masterpiece. That takes a lot of stress off. Thank you 🙏

Helpful, and hopeful. I’m a high school student and have been trying to practice and learn painting for a couple years, and it’s always been a struggle. With materials, with space, and with the actual process and painting skill... and don’t even get me started on “finished results” as most projects of mine had been abandoned haha- it’s rather painful sometimes... but you were very clear, and made sense. Practice and embracing failure is so important, and you explaining a bit of how to get that going, helps a lot. Thank you :)

tip for the glas palet: i ducktape the back of it so that if it shatters, it wont completely fall appart. you can also go around the edges to hide the sharp corners a bit

I've just started Making painting charts of my paints. Warm & cool colors & earth tones. with oil paint. Next im doing Greys with colors. Then color mixes. To see what colors look like mixed with other colors. Artesa has a set of 24 oil colors that are inexpensive to start out. $16.98. Long flat curved edge brushes from rosemary & Co.

It all depends on how they’re used and what the artist wants out of their paintings
