- Here is my soil mix or soil recipe for transplanting plants into bigger containers. This is the soil mix for Transplanting trees, shrubs and starter plants. This soil mix is perfect for larger planting containers, It holds moisture well, but also has great drainage. I got this recipe from Carl Whitcomb's books, basically peat moss, fine ground bark mulch and Osmocote fertilizer.

No Problem!
This is interesting that you use hardwood mulch because every soil mix video I have ever watched by nursery owners always us pine bark munch , never hardwood. Thanks for these videos
I have always used hardwood bark mulch. Got that from Dr Carl Whitcomb's book. Thing to remember is if you mix peat and pine bark mulch you will have a very acidic soil. I feel a lot of people end up with what they can source locally, where I am we have more hardwood trees than pine trees.

That makes sense. Thanks for explaining that
How often do you find you have to water a 1 or 3gal pot with this mix? Thank you for posting this!
Would love to see how you water the 18 count rootmaker or all your potted trees. I am just starting out trying to grow some trees for my property that used to be farm land without any trees. I with a similar set up(lots of pots, a few air prune beds, as well as a pretty similar squirrel proof table for rootmaker flats) and figuring out watering by hand or drip/misters has been difficult.
That's really a tough question,,,I have my lawn irrigation that waters my starts in the rootmaker trays and my potted up trees and plants. 6 minutes a day is all the trays need now but may have to increase as it gets warmer. The potted trees can go several days with just the irrigation system, but then I have to deep water them with a hose occasionally. In the hottest part of the summer I will have to hand water more often. The thing to remember is you just have to watch the plants,,,they will tell you if they are too wet or if they need water..I may make a video discussing this later this summer as it gets warmer.
Thank you for the reply! That is a helpful place to start.
