  • William Goldstein's Homage to a lifelong Inspiration.
My Homage to the Maestro: Remembering Leonard Bernstein was inspired by a lifetime appreciation of the inspiring and emotionally connective music, across all genres, created by Leonard Bernstein. This composition is directly influenced by motives and thematic material from three of Leonard Bernstein’s classic musical theater scores.
The opening, for anyone familiar with On The Town, will immediately notice the reference to “New York, New York, it’s a Wonderful Town! The Bronx is up and the Battery’s down”. Memorable lyrics by Comden and Green. The middle section of the piece is inspired by two beautiful compositions from Candide. The Ballad of El Dorado and of course, Make Our Garden Grow. The last phrase of my homage is inspired by the very end of West Side Story, which is also the end phrase of Somewhere.
I was very careful, in my desire to create an original composition, to never quote literally any of the references, but they are clearly felt. -William Goldstein
