This makes me "homesick" for the 1980's. Little did we know in many ways we were living in peak times. People back then or even 20 years ago wouldn't believe this country now. Makes you wonder where it'll be in another 20-40 years.

You should come back and drive Morse Rd. today. A lot more has changed. Funny your comment about Rax vs. Arby's as the site of the Rax you shot on Morse Rd. is now occupied by an Arby's. Gold Circle was bought by Kohl's, and most of the site of Northland Mall is now a Menard's. Sun TV became H.H. Gregg, which itself is now defunct.

It's odd how much it's still recognizable today but so different at the same time. At least the beginning part on Morse. Most of the businesses are different but the buildings are largely the same. The Wendy's is still a Wendy's, but the Sisters next to it is one of the few remaining Mark Pi express locations around (I work right off SInclair so now I want that for lunch lol). The area near the 70/71 split looks the same now except downtown had fewer buildings in 1986. Campus looks extremely different now, but when I was a student 1995-99 looked pretty much the same as 86. Cool vid.

What pains me to say is, this video doesn't look like that long ago to me. There early in the video on Morse Road, on one side of the street is Northland. Once upon a time on the other side of the street was an airport, Columbus North Airport. As a little kid we would sit in the parking lot and watch planes fly in and out. In the summer of 1969, fresh out of high school, I was a laborer, building apartments on Rt 161 near Cleveland Avenue. For lunch, we had to drive to Morse Road to find a any eatery, even a hamburger joint. Rt 161 was still halfway out in the country. As for the University area, I worked there for decades, mostly west of the Olentangy River as a delivery person. In my late teens I was a regular visitor to a three story campus bar called The Castle which had live music. I also ventured into the South Heidelberg which I think was on the corner of 9th and High. Sometimes we would travel down to the Beir Stube which I believe is still there, 50 years later. And yes, they spell it that way.

There's just something fascinating about history especially between the 60s to now. well even a bit before then too but im less interested in the 50s, though those were some interesting times as well. things have developed so fast over those recent decades. even being born in 1990 I've seen so many changes in technology especially. I'm kinda sad about the decline of physical retail stores and malls in rural communities especially. there are far less out of house social areas around these days. at least in smaller areas.

When this video starts you see Sun TV, and across the street is RAX. I lived on that street. Northtown Blvd. I lived in the second house from Northland High's football stadium fence. My parents bought the house for something crazy like $10k in '70. The highway shots dated October 5, 1986 is filmed on my sister's 20th birthday. At that same time I had just started my senior year at crappy Westerville North. I remember Flying Tomato too. That place use to be very popular. In the summer you could walk past it and it was like spring break. Everyone on the patio drinking beer, listening to the music, and just being silly.

I really miss Sisters. The chicken and sides and biscuits all tasted wonderful. Rax was good too. There is still a Rax operating in the east side of Lancaster, Ohio near the hospital.

Zoetropeification is the Rax good? I was planning to drive down there to go to hocking hills and was going to check it out. Sisters mashed potatoes and gravy was the best.

@@ThePlantUtopia You should certainly eat a meal at Rax. The menu offerings are nearly all the same items as from 30 years ago. BBC, Mushroom melt, Philly melt, Rax Deluxe, twisty fries, shakes, salads and more. No salad bar like back in the day but that is to be expected. I live about 35 miles away and because of that onIy eat there about 3 or 4 times a year. But the service has always been good and the food prepared well. Worth checking out for sure. I loved Sister's mashed potatoes. Even the rice at Sister's was great.

Ha! Try this now. High has been under construction for what seems like 30 years now. I grew up short north and I remember it being under construction when I was little little. I'm 34 now and it's even worse! I honestly can't remember going through the short north or campus area WITHOUT construction everywhere. I avoid High St as much as I possibly can. Along with trashy Northern Lights and Morse Rd.

I was an art student and would steal plastic cutlery from the High Street
McDonald’s all the time to mix paint and use on clay hahaha. Back when tuition was 700 dollars a quarter, but remember, minimum wage was 3.85.

Morse Rd was a major commerce hub at that time. I was hoping the camera would pan over to the Patio Shoppe on Karl Rd. there was a place there called Sonny's Guitar Shop. I spent a lot of time there in 86-88.

McDonald's has moved locations at least two times on Morse Rd. I work at the Department of Taxation and my desk is in the old Northland Lazarus store. Ritzy's is now a gyro shop. They built a new strip mall in front of Northland mall by the fire department and the McDonald's is on the other side of the strip mall.

Drove past Sears where I worked in 87. I remember the Mcdonalds on OSU when it was single story /inside the restaurant they would sectioned off part of the restaurant I was told for football players --I worked there in 95 and visited it in 1977 as a school kid where they took us in the basement and played movies on how they cook the food then showed us around. I wrote a story about it back at Indianola elementry. Cool to see the Sun TV sign. A guy I worked with who worked at rite rug told me they look have 3 prices for carpet depending on the car the person drove up with. The route you took is almost exactly the paths I took growing up in that time. I was looking for my car.

I also worked at that big McDonald's on High Street, for about 4 years, had a lot of fun there! I remember that huge basement well...lockers for the crew, a training room, an office, and a huge stock room. I'm sure it's all different now.

I lived in Columbus for the first seventeen years of my life. I know that McDonald’s but I don’t think the upstairs part is there anymore. I was actually telling my parents how the current design for McDonald’s buildings is crap and looks like a prison, to which my dad said he unbelievably never noticed. Nice throwbacks on your radio though. Bruce is still the boss 100%.

Charleys at 45:07 is the same Charley's Steaks in nearly every mall in America. That was their first restaurant. When I was at OSU in the early 90's it was a little further down on High St. Many of the places here were there when I came to Campus in '92.
Hayes Hall was not new in 1986. Maybe 1886.

I worked at Sister's Fried Chicken. The part that blows my brain is that I can actually tell you it was sparse pea gravel over a tar macadam. I was there when Northland was built ("always 72 degrees," I sold ice cream, washed trays, sold shoes, lived across a field, went to the library, ate fish and chips with malt beer and malt vinegar, fell in love +times, ate at about 15 historic fast food joints. Ate at Wendy's when there was only one Wendy's in the world.
