This Q&A took place on 28 February 2014, as part of the NFSA's 20th anniversary celebrations of the Australian road movie.

This movie never gets olds. It's Gold.
The creatives behind this film will never know just how influential their work has been to the countless drag queens that have taken endless inspiration from it. There are, by my count, five films that the 1990's gave us ("Priscilla," "Paris is Burning," "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar," "Wigstock: the Movie," and Patti Kaplan's "Dragtime") from which almost every drag artist of the last thirty years can trace their roots back to. Of course, drag has exploded as of late with the international Drag Race franchises and we're already seeing a narrative emerge that incorrectly suggests there were few drag artists prior to when RuPaul's competition debuted in 2009. This could not be further from the truth. But back then we didn't have UA-cam tutorials teaching us every trick of the trade and what we didn't learn for ourselves came almost entirely from these trailblazing films....and as long as those of us from back then are still around to pass them down to our future generations, they will remain so.
