      My SIL grew them on north side of house and they did great not to far away from you. She gave me seed, but I see only one and it’s too small to do anything now with cold moving in. It’s growing in full sun and sandy. She was really shaded by a hill and they got a bit of sun.

      @@dustyflats3832 Guess I spoke too soon, this early morning I had a moon flower blossom on the trellis. It was kinda covered by the morning glories, but that's the way it goes.
      Next year I plan on planting a trumpet vine on the trellis, the hummingbirds go for the morning glories but on sunny days they fade before early afternoon.

    Lol! Morning glory comment. We have purple popping on their own. My dad’s fav was heavenly blue. Wow! I just planted Black Magic this year along with Heaven Can Wait! So excited! We are in sand and hope they get sizable by next year. The plants is doing great so far, just wonder if the can handle the winter and if I need to mulch. Z5a. My SIL gave me moonflower seeds, one came up late-real late so we won’t see them as we had 43F this a.m. Hers’s were huge on N side of house. The seed pods are spiny. I pretty much cleared out all but squash, beets, carrots, Brussels and couple hills of potatoes. I’m done! Have a few flats of tomatoes and peppers staring at me and then finish up with potatoes, onions, Brussels and squash preserving. The Brussels were Dagan and Nautica and really can’t tell a difference. I topped a couple on Labor Day and it did fill them out nicely so I did the rest because we are close to freezing. Today I’m cutting into a first time variety of squash-Rugosa Violina? Views say it’s better than Waltham-I so hope as it was without disease, not a huge producer, but Wow! It’s Big peanut! If so I will have plenty to freeze with only a few. Two surprise squash I don’t remember planting were long and green. One might be a short zucchini and the other long and green with yellow flesh and no clue. Lol, you just mentioned your mystery plant. Mine weren’t volunteers and must have been in packet. Nice peppers!
    I noticed this year the blight did not hit tomatoes I planted later nor the volunteers I let sprawl. There are a few leaves turning now, but I think it’s just the plant saying it’s done. Interesting though as the early planted were hit all at once hard. Love the zinnias, I have an all red one I have my eye on to save the seed if the birds don’t eat it.😂
    We have spotted horse mint naturally and pollinators love it and it’s tough to manage as it’s taking over wildflower patch.
    I think it will be a very cold winter. The pine cones are heavy and the birds almost cleaned out the sunflowers and I had a lot. Seen prediction of polar vortex. Maybe I should mulch those berries 😊

Their fragrance is spicy, it’s wonderful. Right now I have some fat green hornworms eating their fill 😊 Better the moonflower than the tomatoes! I’m wondering if it served as a trap crop … 🤔 Oh, does the holy basil reseed or do you grow them fresh every year yourself?

      I don’t use any treatments for it, but do tend to seek out varieties that have natural powdery mildew tolerance or resistance. This year the summer squash/zucchini that fared the best were ‘Safari’ and ‘Dunja’.

    Did your fig produce this year? I want to get a fig tree started.

      The fig shown in this video is only a year old and did not produce yet. However, I have several older figs (3 and 4 years old) that did produce.

    I would like to ask you if you have any problems with hügelkultur beds. I live in Georgia, and we have quite a lot of termites. I am afraid that big logs under the soil will attract them. I would appreciate your thought on this.

      The only critter problems I have with them are the chipmunks- they like to make burrows in the one hugelkultur mound I built on top of the ground (without digging a trench first). I don't have termites here, so I can't speak to that- but my assumption would be the same as yours- that they would be attracted to the large logs at the base.

      @@GrowfullywithJenna Thank you for your reply. The only thing I could find is that I should make this bed at least 10 meters (30 feet) away from the house and it is better to bury logs and not put them on the ground.

    Do you not have deer?

      Lol, I wondered same…and rabbits. We wouldn’t have anything without fence.

      Yes we have deer wander through the backyard periodically. I did have some trouble with them munching in the hugelkutur bed earlier this spring, but applied some repellent which seemed to help. I have a 5’ fence around the main garden, which they could jump if they wanted, but none have tried yet!

    • @dustyflats3832
      @dustyflats3832 Рік тому

      @@GrowfullywithJenna it sees I they can’t see where to land it is less likely they will jump-so keep the garden full😂. I have 7’ I’ve seen them clear elsewhere, but not here. In the winter they got in by the old lower gate so we made a higher one. Had to make a temporary fence for another garden and used rabbit fence on bottom and strung string and cut branches for upper part and that worked.
