    All I can say is a big WOW!! Had no idea you had such a big garden area. Inside and outside the garden fence. And also you never told us your thumb is so GREEN! Great drone shots too! This video is so good and the entire area is fantastic and beautiful! I'm going to watch again, and maybe even again and again! Great job! (Oh, and didn't see a weed growing either)

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  3 роки тому +5

      Thank you so much! I have a dear friend who did the drone shots for me- it was so much fun to see both my own and my parent's property from that point of view! And I promise you there are weeds-a-plenty 😆, but my habit of mulching everything heavily really helps prevent a lot of them from growing. Thanks for watching & have a great week!

    You have so much green...green grass there....so you have lots of room to expand your garden....🤫 ....!!!!!! Really like your idea of the way you grow the tomatoes.....

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  2 роки тому

      Yes we do! I expand every year- but honestly I won't get rid of all that grass. That is my very favorite mulch for my vegetable beds- hubby bags it up when he mows and dumps it in a big pile behind the barn.

    I love rewatching your videos 😊 they’re always so helpful and information packed! And you are not alone on loving okra and eating it fresh from the garden! I’m originally from NEO and now live in SWPa and even though I wasn’t raised eating okra, I love it now! It’s so good hard seared with blackening/Cajun seasoning also.

    Our garden is 1/4 the size and still takes a lot of time. Don't know how you do it. We lost our best Kieffer Tree last year, and you have inspired me to put in a Hugelkultur Garden in our small orchard.

    I enjoy watching your videos because there are few I’ve found from Ohio. I live in the Hocking Hills and right now the weather pattern is on and off warm……if it’s warm it’s raining and I cannot work the ground.
    I bought more grow bags this year and I have a small enclosed garden with raised beds which were not deep enough….I wanted to use untreated boards but hubby was against it…so I thought and thought…..we had plenty of barn roof slate and I placed it against the existing boards and now can put more soil etc in those beds…lol it sort of looks like grave stones lined up but hey they were free and repurposed…..this garden area is against our barn / gathering barn which I have an art studio upstairs and it’s now the room with starts. The second floor deck has winter garden jugs lined up and I’ll use that area for pots of cabbage and plants that Mr Groundpig wants to eat…every year we catch and release the ground hog that’s a pest and move far away but another one comes along…..
    I have an area which I wanted to develop into a large garden but it’s next to our drive and the road…I’m concerned about those who feel they can just take what they want because they’re too lazy to grow their own….( earlier we had someone steal half of our cut and split cherry wood while we went camping) drove their four wheeler up on the hill and took it.😡
    I’m concerned and I know some say I’m silly but a lot of people are without scruples , it’s there they take.
    Further back behind the house I have a 12 x 20 cattle panel greenhouse….but I’d like to make another for more plants. Because our weather was awful in this area last year and I had a poor tomato yield…..normally there’s farmer stands but the few had tomatoes at $2 a piece….without flavor. Riding thru Amish country was the same.
    Right now I’m starting seeds in cardboard boxes and then will just cut away the bottom and plant the box without disrupting the plants roots.
    Being we are seniors a big garden is not in the picture because we both have shoulder problems so I’m taking my flower beds next to the house and planting a veggie kitchen garden…I’ll also will grow cucumbers in the greenhouse since they did well in there last year.
    My husband thinks I’m wasting my time because the critters and deer destroy whatever they want, living next to the woods increases the numbers.
    I’m ready to can more. We made one large room in the barn into a gathering room with wood walls, floor and hand built counters and shelves. To be enjoyed for family get togethers but more for me to have all my preserving equipment etc out there rather then in the house.We often just sit out there and enjoy the wood burner and relax…….gets my hubby out away from the TV….
    Where did you get your elderberry starts? When my kiddos were young I made elderberry pancake syrup every year but they picked it along the railroad tracks near us.
    I advocate medicinal gardens all the time….mullein saved us when we just had Covid after Christmas. I give it to my husband now because he was just diagnosed with COPD. He builds log homes and the constant wood dust has ruined his lungs and smoking.( he quit this past Sat, cold Turkey) oh my….😮
    I made dandelion, golden rod, echinacea and mullein tinctures and plan expanding more into medicinals…..Did you know Rose of Sharon is edible? Even hostas but I haven’t tried those….Rosemary Gladstars medicinal beginners guide is a good source for info….
    I love your garden room with the bench…..I’m wanting to take the area where the above ground pool sat and still has the sand and stone wall and make it into a old brick patio with pots and handmade grow bags filled with medicinals and bee friendly flowers. I’m making ceramic tiled tables from the left over stone tiles that were going to be discarded from my husbands job sites…..more then half our barn redo was wood he salvaged from their burn pile……thank you again ….sigh I could go on and on…😊
    Thank you for listening…it’s just nice to have a gardening vlog from the same zone…..🥰

      Thank you for sharing all of this with me. I totally understand the frustration with critters- we are dealing with much of the same. I got my first 2 elderberry starts years ago from gurneys seed, and since then they’ve spread significantly. I’m also trying my own cuttings this year.

    Wow! You have one of the most tidy, beautiful and healthy gardens!! Such an inspiration! I have to be honest that I find myself being a tad bit jealous sometimes when I see some of the healthy northern gardens. I'm in the south, but not quite southern enough for some crops. But I repent, and use your garden as the inspiration that it is😊. Btw, those zinnias that were a deep peach color were absolutely stunning! I must get my hands on those. Peach and orange flowers are my favorite 😍!!

    Hi, I live in Southern California zone 9a, but getting ready to move to Northern California zone7a-8a on the coast within the year. I saw your channel for the first time this morning and was in awe at how well you described everything. I’m just beginning my journey with gardening again after many years away from vegetable gardening. My spring garden was a severe fail, even my potatoes were scrawny. Everything was grown in grow bags. I will not give up, only learn more, try harder and watch more UA-cam. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

    I live in Northern Ohio and caught a Tomato worm on my Jalapeno plant this year. I have grown them for a few years and this is the first time I've seen one on them. I had no idea they attacked peppers too until now!

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  3 роки тому

      Weirdly enough, I've had less hornworm damage on my tomatoes this year than normal. But a hornworm took down an entire jalapeno plant I had in a hanging basket. It even ate some of the peppers. They will eat anything in the solanum family, including peppers- but I don't often see them on things other than tomatoes!

    A note about pests. I tried succession planting beans many years ago. My downfall was planting the second crop in the same bed as the first. I had an explosion of bean beetles in the first planting. When I pulled the that planting, I watched in horror as the beetles walked casually to the newly uncovered other half of the bed with the tender new bean plants! Never did that again!

    You definitely have a LOT of plants and varieties going. I'd never be able to keep track of all of those every year.
    Dancing with Smurfs! That is one of Tom Wagner's varieties. I have not grown that one but have grown some others that he bred.
    Do you know which variety of Jerusalem Artichoke you have? It is flowering very early, much earlier than most varieties which do not flower until after the fall equinox (

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  2 роки тому

      The only reason I can keep track of them is because I'm a trial manager by trade-- so I'm growing a lot of these varieties for seed companies and providing feedback on their performance!
      I have the 'Stampede' variety of Jerusalem artichoke. I've been very impressed with it!

    • @69thPaladin
      @69thPaladin 2 роки тому +1

      @@GrowfullywithJenna I have a few unnamed varieties of Jerusalem artichokes, and one that I had purchased at Whole Foods thinking it was stampede ... but it wasn't. So that took 3 years to eradicate and dig them all out. Guess I should have just bought Stampede ;)
      I envy people who keep track of plants diligently like you do. I do that with my potato and tomato varieties, but mainly to track pedigrees. Much else that I grow is at risk of me losing track.

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  3 роки тому

      Thank you, Kerry! Borage flowers in Pimms would be quite tasty- I will have to try that. I'm hoping to do a video on watering, but I primarily spot water by hand (using a spray end on the hose or watering can). I have 2 large rain barrels attached to the barn with a hose hookup. When it gets really dry I have a large overhead sprinkler that I use to water the entire garden- this is attached to a hose which runs from the house (I use well water for this). Ideally I'd have drip irrigation hooked up to everything, but it's a project I've just not gotten to yet. Often when I tell folks how infrequently I water they are surprised. My in-ground gardens typically only get watered once or twice a summer (the containers and raised beds are watered much more frequently- typically once a week). I attribute this to both my clay soil which retains water longer than other soil types and my use of heavy mulch everywhere in the garden.

    Hello. Sorry for the late post ehre but your garden is awesome so I just subbed. I did have a question however, You had mentioned that y7ou needed a replacement for Early Girl because they were being 'phased out.' I was curious as to what you meant by phased out? phased out of your garden or that growers are moving away from the Early Girl Hybrid in favor of something else. I love early girl as a variety and have grown it every year. I was wondering why it is being phased out (from either scenario) in your experience? Thanks and your garden is amazing!

      Hello Tim, thank you for your support & welcome to the channel!
      Regarding Early Girl- the company that maintains and produces the stock seed of this variety will not longer be producing it- so at some point it will not longer be available to the packet companies who sell to the home garden market (ie garden centers and gardening catalogs). My assumption is that this is mainly due to the fact that other varieties have surpassed it in quality and earliness.

    The blueberry tomatoes were my favorite garden snack in 2021.. small and easy to eat a bunch. Mine were too little to really do much with, but very productive and delicious! I forgot to grow them this year 😆
    I know I’m a year late, but I love your garden, and I’m 5b too. The vine borers destroyed most all my squash this year. I think I saved an acorn squash plant (opened the vine and found the larvae 🤢.. it’s greening up now) but my summer squash are all gone delicata, patty pan, round zucchini and yellow straightneck, and my spaghetti squash.. I had 2-3 of each. I replanted some summer squash plants,.. we’ll see. I think I’ll have time for them to produce at least some. A few are in pots so I can put them in my greenhouse. Is there a preventative for borers?

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  2 роки тому

      Ugh.. the vine borers. Major issues with them here too 😩.
      I don't have a fool proof, organic solution yet, but here are a few things that can help:
      Once the larvae have entered the stem, it becomes very difficult to control the damage caused by borer, so focus on preventing the larvae from entering the plant.
      Choose resistant varieties- butternut squash is among the most resistant of the winter squashes, while hubbard-types are often the most susceptible.
      Remove and destroy any plants killed by borers as quickly as possible.
      You can use a physical barrier such as a floating row cover or super light insect barrier to prevent adult borers from laying their eggs near your planting. Folks also swear by placing aluminum foil (or panty hose) ‘collars' around the base of the plants. Physical barriers need to be in place when the first adults are detected or crops start to vine and need to be removed at blossom time to ensure pollination occurs.
      Avoid planting squash in the same location 2 years in a row
      Plant as early as possible in the season.
      As soon as the squash plants are finished for the season, dispose of them.
      Tilling the soil in the fall and spring can help get rid of overwintering pupae.

The sunnier part (8hrs) has that sweet 100 at about 8 ft and only now starting to ripen. Got first mini melon a week ago on August 12th. Seriously, try the Minnesota Midget Melon. 4 ft vines. 10 softball sized melons per plant and very quick times for short season growers like us. My only problem is that I lose a couple plants to rotting at the roots from rain in May and then I have a ton of very ripe fruit to give away in August. One year I harvested 30 melons in 3 days after only 75 days. Very sweet and delicious tho, so nobody refused them. Top comment was , "Adorable" . :)

Some of my best smellers include: signet marigolds which have fantastic citrus scented foliage, Jasmine scented nicotiana is fabulous- a richly intoxicating scent- though the open towards the end of the day, wild petunias have a lovely sweet/spicy fragrance (though IMO other petunias stink!), and sweet alyssum has a honey-like scent.
