Photographing with Nikon D70 in 2023 - 6 Megapixels Enough?

- The time has come to try out the Nikon D70, a 6mp CCD entry level DSLR from 2004. I have used a few 6mp DSLRs recently and I’ve started liking the photo output from them, they definitely have their own look. Usually the camera have usability issues compared to modern cameras, the Nikon D70 is much improved over the Nikon D100 in this regard.

I have the Nikon D70S
Well it’s one my favorite camera I have ever bought
It’s a small beast
Limiting the gear can develop the skills of any photographer
It makes the photographer more calm and it pushes the photographer to make more effort in order to capture a good shot …
I definitely agree, it does help with creativity to limit the gear!
i have my dads d70s and he bought it brand new in 2005. it is in immaculate condition. i recently took the entire camera apart, like every single thing, each button and every screw. while i had it all apart i also removed the UV/IR cut filter in front of the sensor so it now shoots in full spectrum and it is so freaking cool. for about the past 6 months i have only shot fullspectrum im obsessed with the look of it. im now getting into IR and UV filters so i can tweak things that way not. the images you can produce with full spectrum and filters is simply beautiful and extremely unique looking. thats why i love it so much. I also just bought a d200 so i can have the ability to shoot in just visible light when i want to do that. im so excited about having a full spectrum d70s and then a d200 =] long live the CCD sensor! i refuse to buy any "modern" camera. there is nothing like the CCD and it doesnt hurt that you can get a MINT condition d200 for about $120 when brand new they were over $1300 i think? lol older nikon dslr are an absolute steal now days
Interesting! I've been thinking about converting a camera to record ir, or at least to get an ir filter to try some of the cameras I have like the D100, which is supposed to be able shoot in ir without a conversion even.
I Bought one of these brand new as a kit back around 2006, my first DSLR. I Was amazed by it. I Just put it in 'auto' mode and away I went. I Took it everywhere, be it on my own or out with my mates. Even today when I look at the photos I took back them they just pop out of my screen, they are so crisp. Maybe it's a combination of how young I was & how I looked back then when I look at the ones with me on I don't know, the images are just superb. I Don't think I've ever had such a great 'out of the box' experience with a digital camera.
The advantage of a 6mp sensor is getting f4 1/40” hand held shots that are sharp without VR, happy days!
Sometimes fewer megapixels means fewer problems 😂
Excellent video. My D70 is nearly 20 years old. I resurrected it a few weeks ago, and I loved the results. Treat it like film camera loaded with transpaency. The exposure has to be spot on, the composition has to be correct in camera as 6 MP gives no chance to start cropping like they do with these 60 MP cameras of today, no messing around with the sliders in LR or PS. Get these right and the results really do surprise you. Not a Leica M8 but not far off in terms of colour. Do not underexpose hoping to recover detail from the shadows, all you get is horrible banding noise. It is good up to iso 640. I use it with my 24~85 AFS VR and the VR works well on this camera, so I keep the iso @ 200~400.

Thoroughly enjoyed your review of the D70 Nikon. I saw a D70 on ebay for $70 U.S. dollars a few years ago, was very sticky to touch, but had only 327 shutter actuations. I offered $50 and got it. Like you a few minutes with alcohol and Q-tips and like new. Love the D70 and just purchased a D300. I use Nikkor 20mm 2.8, 50mm 1.8, 28-70mm 3.5-4.5 and 70-210mm 4.5-5.6, all series "D" lenses. Today the d70 is less then 35 dollars. You can’t beat it for the price.

Look for ones with sticky rubber grips, they are usually sold cheaper, but it's very easy to clean off. I payed around 20 euros for mine.

My first DSLR was a Canon rebel from about the same time, it's quite interesting to now see how the corresponding Nikon cameras were.
They were shipped with the 18 70 afs DX lens f3.5 to f4.5 lens which I use on my D40X.
To be true to the D70 maybe you should try one. Cheap to buy now.👍

Were the photos you showed camera raw, jpegs, or edited in the/a program (Nikon Studio)?
What setting/mode? Have you done a bracket about the under exposure issue?
For me, I am interested in achieving what I was doing with my (mid 80's) FM2 and Kodachrome25, and Fuji chrome, and the fern you showed looked Fuji to me!!!
I think the D70 were about 1,000 USD when they came out, so not sure if that is "entry level".
They are all RAW-files with very basic editing (exposure, curve, wb), in Lightroom, but I don't remember the color profile (probably the default adobe). I used manual mode and I wasn't aware of the underexposure issue beforehand. The RAWs are quite flexible and it wasn't a problem to just increase the exposure +1 stop when editing. Next time I will keep a closer look at the histogram though. I guess it wouldn't be called entry level today but at the time there were no cheaper Nikon DSLRs, the D100 when released two years earlier cost around 2000.
It takes nice shots but you couldn't get bigger than a 5 x 7 print @ 300dpi. A D200 or D60 would be better.
Nonsense. You can print @ 11X14 with this camera with ease. You look at prints from an appropriate viewing distance and not with a 10X loupe doing pixel peeping. The files can also be upscaled by 100% at the very least, if the original was of good quality. I used to get very sharp 5X7 prints from my Kodak 2MP digital camera of 2000 vintage.
@@lensman5762 I'd say the pics I got with a Dimage S414 were good for 5 x 7 and 8x 10 was a stretch. ..and I woll use the method I like and use the one you like.
