According to Merle, this song was his favorite song of all the songs he wrote. It was dedicated to his mom. Thank you for showing us how to play it, Shane. 👍👍👍

I am trying to learn this song because I was inspired by a book I just finished. Titled, The Bakersfield Sound: How a Generation of Displaced Okies Revolutionized American Music was written by Robert E Price. I recommend it if you haven't heard of it. Anyway, my family was part of the Okie diaspora and I can still hear my daddy's radio playing the country music he loved. I know his connection to the history of the Bakersfield sound and his lifelong fondness for country music. My dad really admired Merle Haggard and I want to learn this song as a tribute to him. I'm having a bit of trouble with the intro, but I'm hopeful I'll be playing well enough to play this song at the open mic in my town. I really like the way you teach. Thanks

That is great Denise! Thank you for the info and the recommendation. I also appreciate your sharing your family's history. I plan on visiting Bakersfield sometime this year. So it will be special to see some of the sights and landscapes that shaped much of the music that I love. Keep practicing and you will get it. And if you have any questions or need any help let me know!

      @@countrymusicguitarclassics once again,
Love what you are doing with these videos. I just felt I needed to mention that you do not need to be in a hurry to go to Bakersfield, it’s a rough place. I was raised in a similar situation as Merle (Minus no prison time) and Bakersfield just seems to have more than it’s fair share of hard times. I suppose that is why music just wells up and resonates so well from that area. I have not been back in years, too many bad memories. I will say that it left its mark on me, it has made me resilient. If and when you go, be sure to see Buck Owens Crystal palace, they put on a lot of good country music at that place. Also go visit Don Rich’s Gravesite, He was my personal hero as a young impressionable kid. My Dad played steel guitar as a pickup musician at the Blackboard which was one of Merle’s early Honky tonk’s he played in as well. My dad and Merle are both gone now. I will leave you with a couple lines from one of my songs titled “Bakersfield”
      “Ol’ Merle, Buck and Don
      Are never truly gone
As long as we keep they’re
      Songs alive,
      heroes are hard to find
      But legends never die
      Here in Bakersfield”
Take care and looking forward to more of your videos!🎶

Amazingly bad hatchet job on the finger picked intro (from the 5 to 7 minute marks). Embarrassing really. It's not even in 4/4 timing and this guy doesn't seem to have a clue where the downbeats would even be. Around 6 minutes he tries to play his own bad rendition and its basically in 5/4 (if it was in any intentional timing at all). Just laughable. Beginner guitarists - do not watch this video unless your goal is to become a really bad guitar player. UA-cam has no shortage of hacks putting guitar videos out, but this guy takes the prize.
