    I can totally relate. I’m a 50 year old woman and I love to MTB! Granted, I’m not shredding like the kids, I really can’t keep up with the guys and none of my girlfriends are into MTBing, but yes, I’m a Mountain Biker. What it means is that I’m usually hitting the trails on my own, But I’ll do it every chance I get because I love the feeling of flying through the woods. Sure, I would love to progress and hit those features like a boss, but I really can’t afford to hit the ER every weekend, and at this age, recovery isn’t so easy. So, I’m good with doing what I’m doing, and if I happen to catch some air every now and then, that’s just a bonus for me :)

      Thanks Pricilla, that's awesome! It's important to have fun first while staying safe (54 myself.) I've been trying to progress with baby steps over the last 2 years or so. And with the exception of a dumb crash 1 1/2 years ago, I've been safe. By looking at some recent ride video I did for an upcoming story, I see miles of improvement in my technique and riding style. I can do things on my bike and ride features that would've overwhelmed me in the past. And it's mostly just happened by spending time on the bike and focusing on basics ( I DO practice jumps form time to time mainly because it's fun and does transfer to active trail riding.)
      If you're ever in North Georgia shoot me a message and I'll try to put a ride together. I end up riding solo often myself but it's always more fun with support from friends! Stick around and let me know if there's anything in particular you'd like to see 😀

    So true! Someone finally said what I believe. I am 61 and have been MTBing for 4 years. I learned a while ago to ignore the pressures of watching others and comparing achievements on Strava. Just have fun and ride at your own comfort level. I’m fit and I am happy, that’s what matters. Thanks! Just subscribed!

    Well said and to be honest I never thought about it. But since you asked, I'm an O.G. (old guy) 54 year old mountain biker out to do every trail the best I can and have fun. Improve slowly but surely, riding fast or slow and simply be proud of myself for any skill improvements I gain along the way. Thank you and keep the videos coming!!

    I just finished talking to my nephews, 22 and 16 yr old boys. I told them that peer pressure never ends. I am 51 and have started mountain biking again after 30 yrs. Yes this hobby/ sport is like all the others from photography to welding, the latest greatest and craziest feats are moddeled on my fav. Pltfm, UA-cam. Fortunately I hope I have grown a little thicker armor / common sense over the ever present pressure to perform, create or " keep up with the Jonse"s. Thank you for this excellent video. It is a good example about peer pressure and its affects on all stages of our lives ... B.McP.

    • @TrailBreaker
      @TrailBreaker  4 роки тому

      Thanks, Bill! Yes, peer pressure is part of it but I think most of it is my desire, at my core, to not give up on my ability to do anything and everything I want to. Age will not dictate my performance on the trail but my competence will. The point of this video is to give myself permission to pass on a feature that I know I’m not skilled enough to perform (but may be able to soon...with practice). Thanks for watching👊🏻

    At 52 I pick back up Mountain Biking after a 20 year break. Yes, I am a mountain biker. I don't have the skill set I once had and my 52 year old body talks my 25 year old brain out of a lot of stuff still. But I never gauged myself against anyone else or cared what anyone thinks..... I do it because I love it. I love being in the woods and mountain biking gives me yet an other reason to escape the rat race and unwind. Thanks for your channel brother....I appreciate it!

    This video is 100% accurate. Its a mental battle we all play with ourselves. As adults with other responsibilities, getting a chance to ride is enough of a reward and the progression is just pure seat time. I try tougher trails, and if I have to walk it, I walk it. No shame. There are many aspects to MTB that aren't YT/IG worthy. Being out in nature, the pure exercise, the solitude of being alone in nature, the adventure. There is a motorcycle saying that rings true here: There are only two type of riders: fast ones and old ones. But never both.

    • @TrailBreaker
      @TrailBreaker  4 роки тому

      So true! For me it’s a mental state. Whenever I’m doing something challenging I have one speed, fast ( for me 😁). When I came to understand this I started using the tag line “refuse to act your age” partly as a battle cry for middle aged riders and partly to acknowledge that I still see myself as the indestructible kid who can do anything! Unfortunately this is not the case. This video is about me seeking a balance between immortal Steve and the real one! Also, I stopped riding motorcycles 20 years age for the same reason👊🏻

    At 48 I rediscovered how much fun it was on the bike. The technology of bikes have improved so much from my youth that I have to try some of the small stuff, but as you aptly noted, no one cares about it but you, Thanks for posting this video, it is a nice reminder that we are doing this for the fun of it, not the glory.

      Well said, Greg! Mountain biking is mostly a solitary endeavor for me (even with the YT channel). I normally ride solo and my greatest efforts are unseen. I DO feel like a kid trapped in a old dude’s body and want to be able to do anything anyone else does...period! This video is just me saying out loud that it’s ok to pass on something when my skill isn’t there and the risk is too high. Wanting to do something doesn’t mean I should do something 🙂 Cory, thanks for watching! I really appreciate it👊🏻

    I agree. My main goals are to have fun, get fit, and keep improving. Mountain biking does all three for me. I enjoy being outdoors, the ruggedness, the idea you can travel up and over anything, the independence. I find mountain bikers to be friendly and encouraging.and free spirits. I used to push myself too hard and try to improve too quickly. Now my attitude is to relax and just enjoy it. Who cares if I break a speed record? It isn’t a race! And as far as taking chances, I feared pain and broken bones even as a teenager. That has not changed in 40 years. Some people do not fear pain and take massive risks. That’s just not my personality. I’d rather take it easier and cycle the next 6 months than to be laid up and not cycle the next 6 months,

    • @TrailBreaker
      @TrailBreaker  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks, David! I did this video because I am coming to grips with the conflict between my very competitive "go hard and ignore the pain" rider and the one who sometimes struggles to do that. I've been riding before half of today's UA-camr's have been alive. So I chuckle when their followers say mountain bikers don't wear spandex and that only flat pedals belong on a bike. What's discouraging is when new riders are told they have the "wrong" bike because they don't have the "right" wheel size, fork travel, dropper post, etc. Anyone and everyone is a mountain biker, even my triathlete friends ;)

Groms are made of rubber and recover faster than the wiser set (45+). So; Enjoy the sport; any sport, to the the extent of your skillset and safety sense. as long as you love doing it, then you are a mountain biker, but if you just rode a mountainbike that does not mean you area a mountain biker, same as sitting in a race car for few minutes or do one lap, does not
    mean you are a racing driver.
    1:46 I doubt that many think that, maybe few ppl, but will never do those things.
    so are you an extreme freerider? no, but a mountainbiker yes, but the word mountainbikign is confusing cus it's used a a wide term, even for not riding mountains,
    in Norway we use terrengsykkel, which means terrain bicycle and terrengsyklist, which means terrain cyclist, but translated to mountainbiker.
    but here there are se confusing terms like, demper(damper) bakdemper(rear shock) demperen i bakdemperen er ødelagt( the damper in the rear shock is damaged) some just call whole ting for demper, but that's wrong also krone rør(steerer tube), styre rør(headtube) get confused a lot too.

    Mountain biking is spiritual for me. To me, consciousness is God experiencing its own creation. The written language of God that governs everything in existence is geometry and physics. Mountain biking puts me (all of us) in the middle of Gods creation, on machines designed, based, and built from geometry specifically to test and play with physics. Also my shins are beat the f**k up with pedal strikes and my kit smells like rotten tuna. My bike is my pride and joy and I take better care of it than myself. Yes.....I think I am a mountain biker.

I am still riding at a level of difficulty as before the quarantine but I'm dialing back the voice in my head that tells me THAT'S not enough. I can do more to improve within my current risk level. Continue to work on cornering (which never ends), add pop and some style to my modest jumps and work on making the bike an extension of me on the trail. @@TrailBreaker after having my horizon broadened by riding a lift access bike park for the first time, I realized what really helps the most ( from a beginners point of view ). Like in your other video, you need to dictate what you want to do on the trail rather than let the trail control you, and when you have terrain and features coming at you at 20 mph you need to be active instead of reactive by pumping, squashing, boosting etc. So cornering on berms is #1 priority because that is how you maintain flow and finally getting used to riding down a trail with as little brake as possible to simulate bike park speeds, your bunny hops are good so that should be fine and just being confident in your ability without being over confident. I went to ride solo for my first time. I asked reddit if that was a normal thing to do and some even prefer it because you get to ride at your own pace with no pressure and that gave me assurance. So I was not nervous at all going to the bike park, the night before or getting up on the lift. I just saw it as another trail ride due to the confidence in my own bike handling ability that i put so many hours to hone, and you just need to trust your training and just send it after getting to know the trail.

      I also want to add that this is why I love your channel. I feel that we are in a similar journey in our mountain biking, and that you encourage people to build fundamental skills while showing you working on them as well and you also show your triumph and failures and just seems so genuine. You are telling us a story of your growth vs already being there at the top so we can actually relate to you, and I value your insight. Okay I will stop the bromance now.

    Heck yes I’m real but always learning etc. i went to north ga last week with a friend. Bearhoti trail had a bad crash before a mile one finished the 15 miles. Not used to a rough start downhill. We took a shuttle to save the 5 mile uphill fire road.

      We all are. Tough break with the crash. Hopefully it's more of a buzz kill and not an injury😀

      Trail Breaker yes just a bunch of minor cuts and bruises mostly on my back. I was riding again at Chickopee on Monday. My wife said I’m
      Too old - now that ticks me off. I did look like someone whipped my back was all sliced up but nothing deep.
