Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge - Commentary Free Play Through.
The is the Ultimate Talkie Edition. That is the original graphics with the full talkie from the remake version plus the iMuse music / transitions. Available as a patch here: gratissaugen.de...
It’s wild to me how well this holds up, the jokes are still funny, nothing seems mean spirited or tone deaf, and graphically it’s still gorgeous.
I still remember playing through this game on my Dad's 486 in 1995 at 11pm on a weeknight. The dialogue made me laugh so hard that I woke them up.
10/10, would get yelled at by my parents again.
That's the second longest Monkey 2 Playthrough I've ever seen.
I like the old graphics much better, thanks for upload.
The voice acting adds, but also detracts from the experience. One thing I enjoyed about MI is that it was basically a graphic novel and you were the protagonist. I enjoyed reading it like a book...
I really hate the voices for that exact same reason.
I like it with the voices, it's like a movie or a play where you need to play as the protagonist but you need to find out your part in the script while playing it.
But I do feel like this is just a different type of experience to read it without the voices.
I also do not like the talking much, but there is always the option to mute the speakers - with the downside of not hearing the music and all the other sounds 😐
Same! I loved the non-vocal audio version.
I still prefer it having voice acting. Feels like an interactive cartoon for me.
And besides, the VAs here sure did their best. Not hearing them would be a disservice.
The music in the credits has such a soothing and nostalgic feeling for me, I guess it's just a nice reminder of passing this game a long time ago reading the funny credits. I still sometimes sing the tune to this day.
I sing it as well from time to time.
Classic pixel version + talkie - what we need more !!!
Soooo much better that the new "grafics"... Especially the good old soundtrack!
Just heard about the Ultimate Talkie edition. I'm totally considering it cos the iMuse music (which is here) is far cooler than in the SE music. Plus it has the bit when the Scabb Island map goes silent when you're getting Wally's potion cos it sets the scene perfectly. As if you suddenly get the feeling something's wrong (at least I did)
They 'corrected' it in the SE, I'm still not sure if it was intentional in the first place because there's music at the swamp again (iirc). But it's just the feeling of: 'wait a minute, something is different.' Small thing but so great!
Captain Dread's theme is way cooler in classical MI II for sure

_"Those guys wouldn't know a good story even if they paid fifty bucks for it."_
That's a good joke in reference to what it may have cost to buy this game when it first came out.
Back at the early 90s 50$ where a sh@t tons of money for a disk game.
iMuse + Talkie... perfection!
I absolutely 💯 % loved these games 😊
I wouldn't feel safe knowing all those books were on the shelf high up behind me
Ultimate Talkie seems to be missing a bunch of SFX. I really noticed this at Phatt Island: Can't hear the guard shoot over your head, can't hear the alarm bell when talking to Governor Phatt, Can't hear the wheel spinning in the alley.
Oh yeah! I guess I was hearing them in my memory! I didn't notice
Aw man the memories.....
Great stuff. I had to watch this after getting soft locked in my actual playthrough after getting 4 map pieces.
I love how Guybrush just picks the monkey up, stuffs him in his pocket and walks off oO
Did Guybrush kill and use root beer on LeChuck as a zombie ghost? He is not the brother of Guybrush.
Revisiting this I find the reason why I grew to dig prog rock, long musical pieces and concept albums. Michael Land et co are geniuses
I STILL prefer this over SE.
Paweł Be gtfgj
yep, way better graphics
I concur: by far, I prefer the original.
@@dobanyi the special edition has the same grapics as this one, all you have to do is press f10
Isn't this SE in classic mode?
It's funny that they haven't included a sword fight system like in the first one, for me that's part of the Monkey Island franchise.
I always wondered why Phatt island seems to be full of so many giant people. There's the guard which you first meet on the island, who seems to be quite a bit larger than Guybrush. Also, Governor Phatt takes up about an eighth of the screen. Then there's the guy behind the door from the Gamblers' Club, who seems to have some colossal sized hands, and looks like he could crush Guybrush's head like a peach. However, at 56:37, when you break out of jail and go back to Governor Phatt's mansion, the guard from earlier seems to have shrunken down to almost the same size as Guybrush. Although, that's probably just a graphical error where they messed up the character scale or something.
it is becuase they are all adults :P
It was not intentional (they explain it in the Special Edition version)
Monkey island 2 is my favorite in the series I like the darker and more atmospheric feel it has and the music is so good
I just finished this on ScummVM, I had no idea there was a "talkie" version. The advantage of text though is you can skip to the next line as soon as you've read it.
2nd greatest adventure i ever played
Surely the wheel spinner would get suspicious that everyone wins all the time
He’s in on the scam. Hence why 15 red wins, and he says he’ll see Ralphie again tomorrow. 48:24 :-)

At the shop on Booty island, if you look at an item in the shop and then talk to the parrot, he'll say something about that item.
wait, the intro wasn't in the special edition so how and from where did you get that audio clip of guybrush telling the monkeys to get out?
The audio was actually recorded and included in the game's data. Removing the old intro must have been a late change to the Special Edition. Ultimate Edition restores the lost scene: www.gratissaugen.de/ultimatetalkies/
If you go into classic mode by pressing F1 immediately after starting the game the opening sequence will play with this voice clip
Root beer only works on ghost. Having been resurrected, LeChuck is a ghost now. 2:19:50
You can actually do that? Wow!
@@walmaker8372 Lechuck is a ghost and the root beer will kill him again and destroy his spiritual essence.

Man I remember calling the Blizzard tipline to figure out the green door bit. Thanks so much for the wonderful nostalgia!!
Blizzard tipline? Did you call them to the realm of non-existance? :D
Bach at the early 90s this was great fun
I remember having the hardest time getting the audio to work on this game.
I highly recommend turning down the speech volume to 60%. The voices sound awkward because they're mixed very loudly by default.
1:21:52 - Her voice is unbearable
My thoughts exactly haha! I suggest turning the sound off or skipping past that part as it really is annoyingly loud and unbearable lol.
Ah, memories
"420 pieces of eight a week" *Nice*
Great game, I played it many times.
What are the advantages of the Ultimate Talkie over the Special Edition, apart from the ability to use MIDI music if desired?
The major advantage is the music. And It's not that it uses MIDI that
makes that desirable. The Special Edition version eliminates the iMuse
transitions which (I personally believe) are an essential part of the
soundtrack. If you're not aware of what iMuse is, it allowed the music
to respond to events in the game and vice-versa. This produced a
soundtrack that was uniquely integrated with the game's progression. Ron
Gilbert talks about how cool and revolutionary iMuse was in the Special
Edition commentary. (Ironically.)
There are two other small advantages: Firstly, since it runs on ScummVM many more platforms (such as linux) are supported. Also it restores 'Easy Mode' which is not available in Special Edition.
iMuse worked excellent.
the original graphics look better
@@THESCUMMBAR I would recommend you use a Roland MT-32 (or its variants, such as the LAPC-I or the MT-100) or the latest version of the Munt MT-32 emulator over General MIDI with this game. The music in this version of the game was actually made to take advantage of the unique capabilities of the MT-32.
It would be with later LucasArts and Sierra point-n-click adventures where General MIDI would be best, such as "The Day of the Tentacle" and "Space Quest V: The Next Mutation."
Reminds me of how TIE Fighter CD-ROM Edition beats the Windows '98 version in so many ways.
2:13:39 hahahaha nice riff off of "luke i am your father"
That was really good voice acting, sounds even better than the actual movie
*no! I am your father.
How did you manage to play the game with iMuse music? I have Monkey Island 2 SE on Steam + installed Ultimate Talkie Edition and it still doesn't sound like yours.
Via Sh Via Sh You need to select MT-32 in the ScummVM configuration and also provide the MT-32 ROM files. Look up MT-32 in the ScummVM documentation for detailed information.
I can't provide links to the ROM files for legal reasons, so please don't ask.
Just completed the game today. The ending is quite sad :(
54:23 best part.
LeChuck busting stud, now that's a title ^_^
How were you supposed to know which books to withdraw? There were hundreds of them!
The hints are in dialogue that I've skipped over for brevity. For example, the voodoo lady will mention needing a book of recipes and I think Guybrush himself will mention needing a book if you reach the coffins puzzle without it.
This is liget my childhood game
played this game back in xbox 360 days still have no clue what this game was about😅
I appreciate you doing this without commentary, but you've kinda done it like a speedrun. It would be nicer if you included the dialogue for the puzzles you're solving before you make a beeline for the items that solve them.
Yeah, i put this on like a movie with my husband. I know this game, having played it myself way back when, but he doesn't and I keep having to explain what's going on.
I think you're looking for a longplay. I recommend World of Longplays. I try to make sure it's possible to follow the story, but I am trying to balance that with keeping it concise.
@@THESCUMMBAR I actually was searching for a longplay when I found this! I guess UA-cam search is not always accurate.
@@THESCUMMBAR Guybrush shoots the Root Beer on LeChuck again. Is it working that killed LeChuck again? He's a Zombie and go up and dies.
Scanned VGA graphics are very expensive
WTF ALL THIS TIME.!!!!! This game had voices??? When i was a kid there wasn’t any sound for the voices D: !!!
No, the game didn't have voices. There was a re-release for the 20th anniversary that added voices, and some talented coders retroactively added the voices back to the originals. gratissaugen.de/ultimatetalkies/
@@THESCUMMBAR ooh cool thank u, I thought It had something to do that the version I played as a kid it was in another language
44:58 ,,Take him away" and then he got flash {see his face)
1:01 WTAF!? Where did this voice sample come from?
All the lines were recorded and included in Special Edition, even if the line of dialogue wasn't actually accessible without patching. The most likely explanation is they recorded the dialogue before deciding to skip the opening sequence and drop easy mode.
Yeh that makes sense...well good job digging it out then!
LettersAndNumbers3000 It's an unofficial patch for special edition called ultimate talkie edition.
If you go into classic mode by pressing F1 immediately after starting the game the opening sequence will play with this voice clip. For some reason it skips it if you don't
When I played this game years ago, I remember somehow taking the cleaver from the chef and chasing him around the Governor's Mansion instead.
Has anyone else ever noticed the typo at the end of the game, where the shop sign in the background is supposed to read as "Weenies", but in the game it's actually spelled as "Weeneis"!? Although, the sign and the word are partially obscured, one can only assume that it was supposed to be spelled the correct way. Jeez, I sure hope someone got fired for that blunder!... I think I must of spent way too much time playing this game and studying every pixel lol!
Yea i saw that
The music in my Monkey 2 SE Talkie sounds a bit worse than in this video (this sounds more midi and less tracker) . What are the audio settings you use? I play on the android app
I'm using the MT-32 emulator. This does require you to acquire the MT-32 rom files.
Thank you! And what is the file name? I have a 2 game files 01 and 02 and a .sog file
From the docs:
Some games which contain MIDI music data also have improved tracks designed for the MT-32 sound module. ScummVM can now emulate this device, however you must provide original MT-32 ROMs to make it work:
MT32_PCM.ROM - IC21 (512KB) MT32_CONTROL.ROM - IC26 (32KB) and IC27 (32KB)
I was hoping Largo LaGrande sounds more like Joe Pesci
Did you play with the compressed speech or the flac one?
The Ultimate Talkie tool produces a flac speech file and music tracks, so that is what I am using.
anyway i can play this game right now ?? tell me please
1. Buy Monkey 2 Special Edition from gog.com or Steam
2. Download and run ultimate talkie tool www.gratissaugen.de/ultimatetalkies/monkey2.html
3. Install ScummVM if needed and add the output of last step as a game
1:10:35 hey there is no glass-bottom boat :D fail
45:10 how can the guard go through that door ? Even Phatt -> Now i know why he was laying in bet, cause he`s so fat that he cannot escape :D
Wait its looks like Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker😊
And star wars
nice
just as curious question is it possible to import music also?
There's literally no point. Just play Special Edition and switch it to classic mode. Unlike MI1: SE, MI2: SE maintains voice-over in both modes. The only reason to use the Ultimate Edition is to get the original music (and the iMuse music transitions) back.
@@THESCUMMBAR its because i want to play it on my ipad with ios 11 and i cant play the ios version due to 32bit issues and then i have to play it through scummvm which is why i want the ultimate version :p
It's not possible I'm afraid.
Yecchh. No ghastly nineteen-years-after-the-fact voice acting, please.
Can't believe Return to Monkey Island completely retconed the ending of this game.
SPOILERS
They removed all dialogue from the adults, and made them not their parents after all, and the interaction between Guybrush and Letchuck is naive, goofish and friendly, and removes all the tension that came before. Also the dialogue and personalitys are completely void of any "realness", it's like they are charicatures of their former characters.
I'll just ignore it and pretend it doesn't exist, Tales was the proper ending, and I can only hope one day somoene mad and passionate enough will try it from there.
I think the end of RTMI leaves things way more open to interpretation than what you describe.
I agree with Ozma.
1:47:44 wtf is that :D lol
The worst puzzle in the game. lol
His Monkey wrench 😉
Well it's supposed to be a joke "monkey wrench".
Classic game but pants compared to the first game
how did you get that specific sound to work on ScummVM? cause I'm stumped.
I have the special edition. is there something in ScummVM i need to change or do i have to download a MT-32 emulator?
I see. ScummVM has the emulator built in (See Audio > Preferred Device) but you need the MT-32 ROM files to make it work. See the documentation: wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/User_Manual/Appendix:_Music_and_sound#MT-32_emulation
Unfortunately, for legal reasons I can't link to the ROMs.
Nevermind! Found them after a brief hike and a short walk later! ;)
Elaine is poorly voice-acted in my opinion. You hear she’s acting, whereas Guybrush feels ‘real’. Elaine in MI3 is perfect (British actress)
It's the same actress... Alexandra Boyd did Elaine in all but MI4.
Yeah it’s weird. Perhaps it’s because in MI3 most of her acting is mostly in cut-scenes and she could put more context/meaning into what she was saying, whereas this is ‘in game’ and she might have been reading from a script and no animation or story board.
i'd rather not hear these voices, especially GB. It doesn't fit him. Guybrush is way less comical, in my head, more sour, more sarcastic than juvenile awkward. I think Harrison Ford would do it. Or Ewan McGregor. To be truly comical, Guybrush has to be read by a voice that doesn't try/want to be funny. That's more in line with the contradictory genius of Ron Gilbert's humour. Only our flat-minded age could choose such flat one-sided voice as this.
To bad the 3rd isn't in this ways. What a waste of saga
Well it wasn't bad for the time, but they did indeed made MI more 'cartoony' when I thought the semi-realistic style was much better.
You still had cartoonish/caricature esque people, but not as exaggerated in some of the later games.
Respectfully disagree, loved Curse of MI. Much like everything else, things change and evolve, and not everyone likes change. At the end of the day, the art style is different but it still felt like MI. That's the beauty of the series.....the art style has changed over the years but the dialog and story and humor all still feel the same.
@@crimsontide1980 i refer to the fact that the original trilogy hasn't been completd because of managerial issues
@@MzuMzu-nx1em yep I agree....would have loved to see a true 3rd game, one done by Gilbert. I mean we did get a third one from Ron but 30 years after the second so what we got this year is nit what he originally envisioned doing. We may never find out what Ron had in mind for the third game. I'm thankful we got another game but I'll forever wonder what a true 3rd MI game would have been like had it came out in the mid 90's
