Monumental salt-taking by a Male Red Admiral

  • This male Red Admiral landed on the eastern, sunny side, of the Savernake [Forest] Column, to take salts much as other males do here. The purple Emperor is famed for this behaviour, but I have also seen Silver-Washed Fritillaries doing the same thing. I have seen Red Admirals on mud in summer, but never on stone before, so this was a great opportunity to finally film this species for Butterflying Adventures. A lovely day and no less than 2 Purple Emperor sightings were to follow (see a later video).
