Dave, I started watching you and Christine because I am young and want to learn how to be frugal and still enjoy my life. I just wanted to leave this comment and say that I am glad you’ve made your own channel and we get to see your perspective as well. Frugal Fit Mom is the best and wow you guys are just so awesome. What drove me to make this comment is the moment when you showed us how you and Ryan were getting up the final elevation. I just wanted to say you seem like an awesome dad! Coming from a house without a father, you seem like the kind of dad I’d like to have if I did have a father figure. I can’t wait to see the content that you and Frugal Fit Mom will continue to put out. Keep up all the great work! Thank you guys for sharing your lives with us! Much love!
Just watching this now after my wife and I did 30 miles out of Deadwood a month ago. Heartwarming and The Best Years are two thoughts that come to mind. I fondly remember the outdoor activities with our kids a few years back before they became adults and their lives got busy.....
Awesome video, and great job Mom, and Dad keeping the kids, and Grandma going, and enjoying the bike trip with the beauty of the nature in SD. As far as high fiving on a gravel road a kid I would recommend stopping while doing it.I understand the reasoning, but bike ride without injury it's even more fun.Great kids, well done!!!
I loved watching this! (Very late, apparently.) You guys are rockstars. We rode this trail in summer 2019 and the days were beautiful but the storms every evening and overnight were insane! I’ve never experienced anything like that. We actually missed doing a segment of the trail because the storms flattened one of our tents and we had to hide/sleep in the car and spend a few hours the next morning drying everything out and reorganizing. We started a list of features our future (now current) camper must have on the way home from that trip.
Agreed. The Black Hills get some fierce storms. I got caught in a blizzard there while rock climbing in 2005 in May. It snowed 8 inches overnight and dropped the temps 40 degrees.
I love that they use tushy . 😂also the food to cheer up kids when they cry works longer than I thought . Glad I can still use snacks to keep my kids happy even when they are school age . . Props to all you guys ! Even grandma ! You all are inspiring !
Way to go you guys!!’ My wife and I did the round trip 2 years ago. Edgemont to Deadwood and back to Edgemont in 4 days. Loved the trail. It’s fun to watch your journey and reminisce. Nicely done!!!
What a beautiful thing, not only the scenery, the team work, no internet, and the feeling of accomplishment. Totally awesome and what a great booster, in every way, for the kids, in every area of life! Love it👍💜 tfs!!
He had it right- that was an accomplishment. So much more relatable with including not just the highlights but real life. So many blessings to see here, great job Mom and Dad!
That rainstorm looks like when our family went to Mt Rushmore about 20 years ago in late August. It went from sunny day to epic thunderstorm in about an hour. They get some weather on the edge of the Great Plains.
Such a lovely family video. But please keep reminding your youngest to keep his helmet forward on his forehead! Because if he falls with it way back there it's not protecting the front of his head 💕
This was an awesome video as we drove this entire area (over 2,000 miles from our home) almost 3 years ago. As you and Christine are always “preaching” experiences are far more lasting than material things. We are a frugal family with goals to be completely debt-free within 3 years with only our $50k mortgage to go. It is so encouraging to find like-minded people sharing a glimpse of their life to motivate, inspire, and challenge each other to live frugally. We are also living frugally on my teacher’s salary. I am an elementary special education teacher who primarily teaches within the inclusion model. From little snippets on Christine’s videos you are also a teacher but working in a different role now.
Yep, taught and worked in K12 public schools for 10 years. I worked with many Special Ed. teachers who were absolutely fabulous and taught me so much. I'm glad to hear about how close you are to being debt free. We are also working on paying off the house. We hope to be done in 3-4 years.
Dave, I watched this video, and literally cried when Ryan fell and got hurt. The way everone comforted him and worked as a team pulled at my heart strings. I can't believe that your children, especially Ryan cycled such a long trail, and they all enjoyed it! As Andrew said..."I feel accomplished", as he should!! I am obsessed with your channel, as well as Christine's because of your family dynamics, as well as the values you teach your children. Great job to you and Christine!!
OMG, that was fantastic. I smiled all the way through. What a great adventure. Great job grandma, love the kids but my goodness, Ryan is just the cutest little fella! The scenery was great.
OMG……I’m soooooo into this!!! I’m from ca, but live in northern Colorado now and we LOVE biking. I’m always looking for long rides we can do as adventures.
Awesome video 👏 Ryan is so adorable 😍 and all are troopers my kids would be complaining at mile 1 lol. Love the scenery. Thanks for sharing! Looks so fun and the memories!
Poor little dude. Mama's such a cool and collected lady, a true angel. You guys are an inspiration. Accidents happen, and luckily it was just a few minor scrapes and bruises. Keep being awesome and wholesome, guys. Lots of love and happy riding!
Great to see family had a good time together. thanks for taking us along. mom to the rescue yep mom was right food fixes everything. lol Enjoy rest of the vacation.
I am so impressed! Especially by giving your kiddos such healthy role models! Wowza! I am now looking into getting a bike, you all make it look like such fun!!
This is such a beautiful video of you guys having a wonderful time! Who needs crowded cities and sight seeing when you can have the best time with your loved ones in such amazing nature :-)
I found frugal fit mom a month or so ago. I just love her!! This is the first video of yours that I have watched and I so thoroughly enjoyed it. Family means everything. Wish my kids were little again but alas, they are 20, 21, and 22 years old now and the oldest is married. So it definitely changes things. In our case the son-in-law loves us and goes on every trip we go on and wants us on every trip they go on. Family dynamics may change but as long as you stay a family that is what matters! Enjoy every moment with your wife and kids!! God bless your family!!
Awesome video. You all looked like you enjoyed yourselves. What a nice family, and what a great accomplishment for everyone. I am amazed the young kids could ride so long. Biking is a blast for all ages.
That was incredible! You two are amazing parents to some equally amazing kids. Congrats on completing the trail! The sights were beautiful and the tunnels through the mountains were so cool. Much love to y’all ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great video! Enjoyed watching your family ride this trail - thanks for sharing! It has inspired our family to look for similar "rails to trails" rides in our area. We were just recently in South Dakota as well - absolutely beautiful!
I know this video was from a year ago but I just watched it. Just got back from a trip to South Dakota visiting a friend and fell in love with the Black Hills. I would love to come back and backpack the trail with a couple of friends. I watched your video so I could see what the trail is like. It's beautiful! I love that this is a whole family adventure. Great job to all of you!
yep them are the crazy storms we get in the middle here. im from northeast nebraska and there's some crazy storms. similar to that rain scene in Forest Gump. lol good video!
What a beautiful trail ride. Your kids are such troopers. Nobody complaining about how far it is or that they don’t want to go any farther. I wish I could have gotten my husband to bike when my kids were at home. I still ride but always alone.
Dave, I found your wife’s Channel for the food, but glad to see you have a channel! You’re an incredible husband and dad! Please keep up the content, because you are inspiring me all the way over here in New Orleans as I lead my family!
I love watching y’all especially in these crazy times with so much negativity and uncertainty. You’re so wholesome and it gives me hope for a family unit of my own like this someday (not that I necessarily want 4 kids lol but you and Christine’s kids are so cute and well mannered that it makes me reconsider haha).
My trail where I run has one of those bike tool stops. I wish I had gotten more active when my kids were younger, they are both now 17 & 19 and won't come with me when I go out for hikes and biking and stuff. I'm envious of your family time together. Also, you need one of those drones that follows you automatically so you don't have to stop to set the camera down periodically for good shots. Imagine the shots you could get with that. :) Have fun and stay safe!
What was your favorite portion of the trail? If someone was to bike the trail but was only planning for a shorter portion (for about an hour or 2, 3 at very most) where would you recommend person start? I am in South Dakota (east river) and will be in the badlands later next month just for a day.
Stop 5 (Dumont) to Stop 7 (Mystic) is almost all downhill and some of the more scenic portions of the trail. If you want a climb, then I think Deadwood to Englewood is a good stretch with some nice views. Check out the map here: gfp.sd.gov/userdocs/mickelson-trail-map.pdf
I want to like this and Christine's video a hundred times over. My partner and I are thinking about having kids in a few years but our worry is not being able to trail run, mtn bike or rock climb with kids in the picture. If our family dynamic is half as awesome, positive and adventurous as what you show on video than I think we'll be okay. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to watching more adventures!
@autumn, yes, we trained for about 4 weeks. I wish we had trained just a little more. Most of our training rides were around 2 hours. It would've been nice to have done a few more rides that were closer to 4 hours. We were on the bikes for about 4 hours each day.
If every family was like yours, the world would be a better place! You and Christine are to be commended. 🙂
Exactly what I was thinking!
Dave, I started watching you and Christine because I am young and want to learn how to be frugal and still enjoy my life. Kat, I’m come from the same background. That’s why we love our new frugal fit dad!!
Just watching this now after my wife and I did 30 miles out of Deadwood a month ago. Heartwarming and The Best Years are two thoughts that come to mind. I fondly remember the outdoor activities with our kids a few years back before they became adults and their lives got busy.....
What an amazing family trip! Memories to last a lifetime. Can I also say how amazing grandma was as well.
What a fabulous journey! And what a wonderful gift of family. Thank you for sharing this.
Most AWESOME family EVER!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My mama heart wanted to help Ryan when he fell 💔 So glad that car didn't hit Christine!
Nice to see a family doing outdoor activities together…. Not a stinking video game.
Love the aspens at the lunch stop! This footage has been exceptional. Thank you for taking us along!
What a great family 👪 to ride a 109 miles . Love your video and family ❤❤❤
Until Christine shared her part of this I had no idea you had a channel. Color me surprised.
When you said to watch for the techniques your wife used after that incident I was like “food!” hahaha what a good mom she is!
Go Grandma! She did awesome! So did little Ryan. Such troopers!
It's ALWAYS the Dad's fault. LOL!! I just love your family!
Awesome video, and great job Mom, and Dad keeping the kids, and Grandma going, and enjoying the bike trip with the beauty of the nature in SD.

Mom’s view on her channel, Dad’s over here - I like it!
Good on you Dad....
Nice job
Dave, It did my heart good to see that "dad hand" reach down at about 18:10 and give Ryan a bit of a boost.
I am loving your videos and seeing where you and your family go together! It’s almost like I’m doing the trails with you guys. 😊
I love that they use tushy . 😂also the food to cheer up kids when they cry works longer than I thought . Glad I can still use snacks to keep my kids happy even when they are school age .
. Props to all you guys ! Even grandma ! You all are inspiring !
Awesome video great to see such a tight family

That is unbelievable! What a memory for those kiddos!

Great video, Dave! You’re a good husband and dad! Love to see it in action.
The kids are fortunate to have you both as parents. 💕

I just subscribed to your channel because your Wife told us to and frankly, Christine is very intimidating so I'm going to do as she says.
I can relate. :)
Such a lovely family video. But please keep reminding your youngest to keep his helmet forward on his forehead! Because if he falls with it way back there it's not protecting the front of his head 💕

That was so fun. Accidents are gonna happen and mom is ALWAYS ready for anything. Amazing job you all did - even grandma.
Great job filming! Felt like I was going along with you guys without having to peddle! Amazing kids!
Parenting goals! You guys are awesome.
Kudos to mom for keeping up. Great video. I enjoyed Christine's also.
God Bless you brother, for being a dad, this world nowadays desperately needs.
Dave, I watched this video, and literally cried when Ryan fell and got hurt. The way everone comforted him and worked as a team pulled at my heart strings. Hi. My frugal fit mom sent me over here to subscribe 🙃

heading out to ride in September - this was a great video to show us what the trail is all about. Love the kids' attitudes!! Nicely done!
Dave, I found your wife’s Channel for the food, but glad to see you have a channel! You’re an incredible husband and dad! Please keep up the content, because you are inspiring me all the way over here in New Orleans as I lead my family!
Wow! What a very impressive young family! Really enjoyed watching your video. Very refreshing. Looking forward to doing this trail soon.
I enjoyed watching this so much!! Thank you for sharing your trip (plus the music was a great touch)!
Great Video Dave!

Absolutely love this video! I am planning to ride the Mickelson next year on my trike. Your video has encouraged me. Thank you.
beautiful🔥🔥🔥
Cristine was obviously just there for the food 🤣🤣🤣
awesome

Yea, a great job well done, now try 500 miles in seven days 100 mile on day four many have done it. One you have you find you can do anything.
I want to like this and Christine's video a hundred times over. My next video will cover what we did with our kids when our family was younger.
I know you guys are a VERY active family but I’m curious if your kids / you and Christine prepped or trained for the long ride ?
@autumn, yes, we trained for about 4 weeks. I wish we had trained just a little more. Most of our training rides were around 2 hours. It would've been nice to have done a few more rides that were closer to 4 hours. We were on the bikes for about 4 hours each day.

Actual bikers. Nice. No ebikes!
How does this work? Where do you sleep and shuttles???
