I love how yellow guy wants to hold hands when the butterfly says "but maybe I can hold your hand" he reached his hand for it, but the butterfly just flies away, this little detail, which could be unintentional, shows us the hole theme of the episode already. The cult only gives you promises but doesn't really fulfill them. They give you the idea of being loved but dont actually care about you. I just love the show and this episode particulary.
great little spot there, imo this is actually not about cults, but the cult is more a metaphor for people deluded by the idea of love (pessimism incoming, but this series is pessimistic) the idea that a soul mate is guaranteed to you, like the characters say is actually deluded. There is no guarantee you will find your "soulmate" like the characters push. It's a cult of love, people who dedicate themselves fiercely to the idea of love and soulmates and put full FAITH in it, can actually be cult like, which is why they chose to include the cult. Essentially the idea of not finding love can be a seriously hard pill to swallow, so general attitudes in society border on deluded, the story of michael in the cave and the denial of the fact he didnt actually find his soulmate emphasises this.

Not to go all MatPat, but I feel like that's a pretty accurate representation of how most cults will actually try their hardest to _hide_ the fact that they're a cult, at least until they believe they've got you caught hook-line-and-sinker. Very, VERY few people actually go out looking to join a cult on purpose, the vast majority don't realize they're in the process of joining one until much later. So yeah, the whole episode being about love and acceptance and then suddenly changing gears to "oh, and you also gotta worship this dude" seems pretty spot-on. From the accounts I've read from ex-cult members, the realization that they're in a cult was often just as sudden and jarring for them.

So in short they are lying to David to keep him from leaving the kingdom of love, but it all comes crashing down on the cult as David wakes up from his daytime nightmare and unlearns the lies taught to him by the teachers
The gravel could also just be a stand-in for money. People who end up starting a cult often do so purely for personal gain rather than out of genuine religious conviction, though I'm sure there's some overlap as well. The fact that Malcolm gets angry if he doesn't get his gravel could also be pointing to this. You'll find plenty of real-world examples of cults where the leader demands that their followers pay them tithes or fees or even surrender all their worldly possession altogether for the cult leader's benefit. And if that's all their cult is to them - a money-making scheme - it would make sense that they'd be pissed if the cashflow ever stopped.
Don't worry about this, it's for the good of everyone. Now everyone can learn about love, and friends, and worshipping, and dictators, and torture, and murder, and- wait, am I being corrupted?

I like this part, "I'm hungry" "No, you're lonely" The yellow guy is genuinely just hungry, but the caterpillar disregards that and tells him how he's supposedly actually feeling to help further assimilate the yellow guy into the cult. The caterpillar is creating a problem for the yellow guy as a means for control. I know I'm pointing out the obvious here, I just thought this episode was neat. I haven't finished the series yet though, so maybe it's foreshadowing or something instead. Either way it's a nice subtle commentary on cults. It was also funny in an absurd way.

Out of all the episodes, this is probably the most "normal" one. He just had a nightmare about the wrong version of love and almost joining a cult and when his friends finds him back he see what love trully is.

This really shows how innocent people are to the real world and how easy it is to be manipulated by people who you think care but just want to use you.

Looking back on the og youtube series, this episode always hits so fucking hard. Even just at the beginning when Shringhold goes to hold Yellow guy's hand, but flies away as soon as Yellow reaches out is such a subtle, yet powerful scene!!!! And not to get too personal, but as someone who grew up with a very conservative/strict community, everyone talking about peace and love, only implying the cruelty of misbehaving the supposed rules of a god, are so real. Not to mention how Becky & Joe nailed the dramatic shifts of each line of the love song, the absurdity of their traditions, going from fluffy puppets in fluffy clouds, to friggin malcolm the gravel-eating-god emerging from hell, absolutely kills me. So in short they are lying to David to keep him from leaving the kingdom of love, but it all comes crashing down on the cult as David wakes up from his daytime nightmare and unlearns the lies taught to him by the teachers

The gravel could also just be a stand-in for money. People who end up starting a cult often do so purely for personal gain rather than out of genuine religious conviction, though I'm sure there's some overlap as well. The fact that Malcolm gets angry if he doesn't get his gravel could also be pointing to this. You'll find plenty of real-world examples of cults where the leader demands that their followers pay them tithes or fees or even surrender all their worldly possession altogether for the cult leader's benefit. And if that's all their cult is to them - a money-making scheme - it would make sense that they'd be pissed if the cashflow ever stopped.

The yellow guy is genuinely just hungry, but the caterpillar disregards that and tells him how he's supposedly actually feeling to help further assimilate the yellow guy into the cult. The caterpillar is creating a problem for the yellow guy as a means for control.
I know I'm pointing out the obvious here, I just thought this episode was neat. I haven't finished the series yet though, so maybe it's foreshadowing or something instead. Either way it's a nice subtle commentary on cults. It was also funny in an absurd way.
Then in episode 5 he’s asked “are you hungry” & he says no.. he probably just thinks he’s lonely, I mean he hasn’t eaten all day, of course he’s hungry!

Out of all the episodes, this is probably the most "normal" one.

Here's some background details on this one.
1. Shrignold's wings, besides scribbles, is made of circles, diamonds, stars and heart patterns.
2. They once again misspell something, Harmunee.
3. When they show the gravestones, the date of death is 1906. 19th of June appearing again.
4. Red Guy, Roy, Notebook and Tony are at the ring ceremony.

6. There is a single frame of the Caterpillar in the egg having blue hair.

This really shows how cults create this kind of facade to manipulate and groom people. This is really well portrayed here as the ‘yellow guy’ is groomed into thinking it’s all love and care but he’s being changed and molded to peoples wants. The fluffy dog is being by him and all he can say is “harder”. This really shows how innocent people are to the real world and how easy it is to be manipulated by people who you think care but just want to use you.
Not only that but, rapist and molester usually approach those people/kids who are emotionally more unstable. They won't go for the confident people cause they will either beat the crap out of them or tell their parents It's freaking sad.

Looking back on the og youtube series, this episode always hits so fucking hard.
Even just at the beginning when Shringhold goes to hold Yellow guy's hand, but flies away as soon as Yellow reaches out is such a subtle, yet powerful scene!!!!
And not to get too personal, but as someone who grew up with a very conservative/strict community, everyone talking about peace and love, only implying the cruelty of misbehaving the supposed rules of a god, are so real.
Not to mention how Becky & Joe nailed the dramatic shifts of each line of the love song, the absurdity of their traditions, going from fluffy puppets in fluffy clouds, to friggin malcolm the gravel-eating-god emerging from hell, absolutely kills me.
And even now, I still laugh my ass off from the:

I simply meant that I was in a highly religous community growing up, and that my own expereinces as a kid could relate to this.
Whether or not it was a cult, is not something I'm comfortable discussing online, however I appreciate your concern!
Im no longer part of that community, nor religion.
Looking back, I understand how messed up it was, however the sheer absurdity of interpreting that, as a bunch of cute/fluffy puppets feeding gravel to a statue, is just funny.
And in a way, being able to laugh back at it all, through art like this video, is very comforting and cathartic! :)
