    Ripped to a .vob using mplayer.

      This was Hackman's first comedic performance. He just NAILED IT. I grew up with Hackman as 'Popeye Doyle'....and then, to see him in this....it was a revelation. Hard to believe that it was him under that beard.

    You cannot overstate how brilliant Hackman is in this scene. His mannerisms, his voice, his expressions, the soothing way that he speaks. Very few actors could have pulled this off.

    At 4:25....when the monster screaming as he breaks down the door...THEN HE LOOKS AT HIS BURNED THUMB AND SCREAMS AGAIN. I *live* for this scene. It is the funniest thing in the film.

    The most subtle line in the scene is when Harold asks the monster to hold out his cigar. Harold says, "Do you have your cigar? LET ME SEE!"

    What a great scene. I read somewhere that Gene Hackman asked to be in this movie - any part -- I guess he knew it would be a hit. This cameo appearance almost steals the show.

    For my entire life, my father would always say "But wait, I was going to make espresso!" whenever someone abruptly left or he wanted to keep talking. It wasn't until I caught this film on tv that I realized where he got it from.

    The first time I saw this I was literally rolling on the floor. All the more so for how Gene Hackman is so well known for playing hard man, serious roles. I can count the films that have made me laugh as much as that one on one hand.

    I saw this movie when I was younger and my two older brothers told me he was Gene Hackman and they were laughing out loud. Not only a great actor, but a comic man.

    It's still amazing when we see actors known for dramatic roles break us up when given the oppoprtunity to do comedy. Gene Hackman here, Leslie Nielsen and Peter Graves in "Airplane", and, some years back, Lee Marvin in "Cat Ballou". Makes it all the more funny.

    I had a party at my home some years back. Near the end of the party (there were probably 20 people left), I decided to turn off the music and put a Young Frankenstein DVD on the tv. Nobody left for the entire movie, and half way through, the entire party was a in chorus of laughter-me included. This movie is so friggin' funny even today!...and as far as I know, no pot was involved in the laughter...just honest hard, stomach wrenching laughs.

    Yes, the script is great. Directed by the best, no question. In the end, though, this movie lives from the outstanding casting. Hackman and Boyle deliver absolute perfection in this small scene. Comedy is the hardest of all the dramatic arts and they pull it off with ease and brilliance.

    Detail after detail make this scene a masterpiece. Just an endless supply of comic Easter Eggs. The comments mention many others, but my favorite is the coldness of his hands makes the thumb indistinguishable from and feel like the inanimate cigar.

    Personally this is my all time favorite scene with Gene. Yes, he is gifted in dramatic roles but because this was such a departure from his normal typecast..It was my favorite. His blind man chemistry with Peter was priceless.

    I love the facial expression when Gene Hackman says "Cigars!" and then looks PAST the cigars to the side as would be expected if one can't actually see them. It's a small but genius acting detail, absolutely hilarious!
    Then, as the monster walks up and leaves, Gene Hackman just stares empty in the distance like; "woah, where the hell is he?" And to know that Gene Hackman is just acting, that he isn't blind at all, makes it even funnier. What an absolute classic scene! And Peter Boyle is great as the monster as well

    The first time I saw this scene on T.V. I laughed my ass off, I loved how the Monster rolls his eyes when the priest breaks the glass like "Oh brother". That actor is Peter Boyle, AKA Frank Barrone in Everybody Loves Raymond, and in a Hallowern episode reprises this role when he comes in dressed as Frankenstein Monster in a hilarious scene.

    I saw this in the theater when it was out for two weeks and I laughed my ass off. This movie belongs in the pantheon of comedy. Both of these actors were dramatic actors up until Young Frankenstein.
