- The Met Fifth Avenue: Medieval, Byzantine, Lehman Galleries
Gallery views of The Costume Institute's spring 2018 exhibition, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, narrated by exhibition curator Andrew Bolton.
The Costume Institute's spring 2018 exhibition features a dialogue between fashion and medieval art from The Met collection to examine fashion's ongoing engagement with the devotional practices and traditions of Catholicism.
The Byzantine galleries at The Met Fifth Avenue focus on designers who were inspired by the interiors of Byzantine churches, while the Medieval and Lehman galleries feature designs inspired by the holy ordering of the Catholic Church.

Hands down one of the best themes in Met Gala history
Completely agree. I miss it so very much.
Indeed
Yeah if you’re into the murderous Jesuits running the world.
This and Savage Beauty
I’m still Obsessed with this met gala theme, the fashion and aesthetic was absolutely stunning in every way possible
Same!
That's no coincidence. Evangelization through art
They have amazing breath taking clothes in the exhibition. Unfortunately, the met gala red carpet was very underwhelming. A lot of the celebs missed the theme. The gala would have been more epic had the designers did more "catholic imagination" in their inspiration for the designs.
The best Costume Institute exhibit I have seen. The music, the vibe, the curation, and of course the fashion pieces made this such a remarkable exhibition. I will never forget walking through this.
This space must be a nightmare for the security guards at night.
Yamini Jaswal ahahahaha why?
Yamini Jaswal It's scary even in the middle of a day.
My thoughts too... Galleries are fascinating but creepy at the same time.
Spooky more like.......
Actually I think it must be such a privilege to be alone in a quiet gallery with so many treasures, most paying visitors will never get to contemplate these works in complete silence
I would’ve rolled up in my first communion dress 😂🤣😂
I can listen to him talking for hours. Also, this was approved by the Vatican.
The Vatican now claims they did not know what sickness was going to be involved. in this display.
They sent some pieces and even some ministers/priests were there for the MET Ball, behind the scenes and inspecting the gallery
The vatican approved showing in a museum type setting. Not the mocking of sacred vestments with the display of the Hollywood crowd spin on it. Try this with the muslims and other religions of the world and see if they can get away with it.
landdead26 Vatican didn’t support the event. They only lent the dresses to be exhibited in a separate place than normal dresses and only AFTER met gala decide to go with the theme. The met gala event don’t need Vatican’s approval / permission to go ahead with their Catholic theme.
And it’s not a new thing for museums to borrow ecclesiastical dresses to be exhibited, the met museum borrowed a bunch in the 60s becoming one of their most successful exhibition, few other museums have done the same. What artist wear is their CHOICE and unlike Rihanna, not everyone explicitly appropriate ecclesiastical dress.
Some priests thought approved the event. Just because a few priests that allowed for this sacrilige does not make it okay. If some of your friends jumped off a cliff would you do it too?
The Met Gala is never trivial, the though process and research that it goes through to make every event possible is amazing! the references, the creativity and the FASHION!
the dresses give me chills... so beautiful
Where's "Angels and Demons" by Alexander McQueen. That was an EPIC collection
Three pieces were displayed at the MET Cloisters location. There's a separate gallery video for that collection.
The collections here are truly beautiful and capture the theme amazingly. Thank you for presenting them.
This is stunning. Thank you for documenting these masterpieces. I wish I can see these irl someday
Just fascinating 💖🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I went there yesterday and it was an incredible experience and if I could go again I would go in a heartbeat.
Wow, i was mesmerized. Fashion is like architecture: one has got to experience the artwork on a practical world like wearing it or living in it.
Beautiful, Mr. Bolton..... just beautiful. Hope to visit one day.
Astounding, miraculous artistry!
The best show !! Can’t wait for another exhibition
Am literally crying what perfect dresses
Esta es una autentica invitación a los sentidos y la espiritualidad en su máxima expresión. Really delicius Amazing piece alexander McQueen!!
It.s not convenient for me to visit the Met anymore so thank you so much for this I'm so pleasantly surprised; this display is incredible epic
WHERE IS MCQUEENS LAST COLLECTION IN ALL THIS
They were displayed at the MET Cloisters location which has a separate gallery video.
Amazing. I'd love to see this exhibition visit Chicago.
Amazing!✨
Beautiful!
🙌🙌🙌🙌
Thank you for sharing Those amazing pieces of art that I could only imagine being able to wear ♥
I seriously need to up my fashion game!
Great idea
David Bowie are you???
CH8 GB1 IKR?!?!
These dresses are immaculate
Joan of Arc meets Excalibur! What a truly increadable aultristic film could be written totally inspired by these beautiful stunning stupendous gowns!
This exhibition is beyond incredible!
Uma amostra de vestimentas com design com imaginação católica visualmente e Artísticmente Belíssima peça que são obras de arte lindas
Sarah "The Dutchess" I've been enjoying past Met Galas this however, has taken my breath away.
Perfect
I am speechless! As a museum studies student and fashion history scholar (I also happen to be Roman Catholic) I feel I can now go into the afterlife with greater comfort as I will be well-dressed there as well. Thank you for the upload. I can not imagine the hours and hours of work this installation required.
Best Met Gala ever!
Wow 🤩
Went there today. Such a beautiful display. The background music Time Lapse by Michael Nyman intensified the exhibit. Loved it💕
Magnificent
Love the narration!
i love the leather jacket!!!
Omg the dolce and gabanna collection
So I'm very grateful you're sharing these videos. I went to NY one week after this exhibition ended so I was devastated 😅But... I didn't hear anything about Gaultier or McQueen!! 💀 Is there a second part to this video?
He looks like Bowie :o
i always look for McQueen pieces
It's all fun & games until a sermon starts in the middle of the night
Hi All, does anyone know what the music is at this show at the Met? Loved it, no one available to me today could tell me.
Frank Albano Time Lapse by Michael Nyman.
AWES♡ME 😍
I am not Catholic anymore after being dismissed from this religion after getting a divorce from a man who almost killed me, so I really cannot comment after watching this video and reading all the comments. But I do believe a lot of work went into designing these costumes. Looking at each piece as a work of art without putting a brand name of a religion to it maybe would have went over a little better. I am happy to be a Christian with no label of religion. Very interesting display.
Why did you not get an annulment. Are yuu saying you were excommunicated because you got a divorce. My friend married a woman that was in an abusive relationship. They were able to marry in the church after she got annulment.
Sólo diré gracias Gerard Cortez 🇲🇽
The authentic medieval clothing has a reverence and shows elevation of the mind beyond what is on earth, while the new fashion just makes the forms and colors look trashy. The juxtaposition is a great commentary on what we view as fashion and tasteless all the same.
Can someone tell me the song playing inside? Like when you actually go there? There’s was no signal so Shazam wouldn’t work but I NEED the song. I NEED IT
Squishy Friend Time Lapse by Michael Nyman.
Can anybody help me identify the black mask with rosary beads draped on it? timestamp 3mins 44 secs.
It looks like Alexander Mcqueen but I can't find it.
Anybody knows the name of the theme played in the background during the exhibition @ the museum?
Andres Vanpelt Time Lapse by Michael Nyman.
I can't comprehend clearly what he's saying.
the Mugler tho thankyouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
If anyone can tell me the music they play in the actual exhibit it would be much appreciated. Went there today and could not find it.
Chicken Bob I’m looking for it too, only thing I know is that is from Michael Nyman it seems
Chicken Bob I’m trying to find the music too!!
It’s Time Lapse by Michael Nyman
Tatiana Millan Thank you!!!
I’m curious, how can people actually see the dresses if they’re up so high?
beatifull,
Look amazing. Can someone please give him a new haircut, it makes me nervious.
it's a'rug'...
all he gotta do , is take it off..lol
Richard Lund His wig needs a haitcut.
Omg! All can see now is Andy Warhol!... 😂
If a hair piece triggers you, I wonder what happens when you leave your home. Lol
2:27 does anyone know who designed this dress? 😍
It was designed by Alexander McQueen for Givenchy Spring-Summer 1999. Gorgeous piece!
@@martynaes2443 yes! It is magnificent! no wonder when it's McQueen 😂. Thank you!
Most of those “Crosses” are Ts
4:14 is that the "sasha fierce" dress?
I need night at museum in the met after the smithsonian...
It's equisite.
It is quite shocking... such a beautiful piece.. and no fact checking! Ricardo Tisci invented what!? That is Hondura´s Matriarch Suyapa. She has been wearing the same dress for more than a 100 years. Get your facts straight.
them: ***catholic*** imagination
also them: byzantine icons and mosaics
Before the Schism all Christianity was catholic (katholikos), byzantine art is heritage for both Churches. Especially Italy was more byzantine than western european in middle ages- and was the heart of Church.
Never heard of Eastern Catholic Churches?
It’s because they actually did their research…
This is amazing but somehow I feel a little bit creepy with those mannequins.
And this is the reason why I would never leave the Catholic faith, no matter how persistent these born again christians can be. The art and architecture and the people inspired by the Catholic church keep my faith strong. Why would I exchange the beauty and pageantry of the Catholic basilicas with the whitewashed boring walls of a protestant church?
yeah me too
My religion is also Roman Catholic but I think that we should respect others belief. Don't get too caught up by the "labels", we all are human. We need to spread love and positivity despite of differences.
Madame Poovie you just taught me about history there. I'm sorry you are right. I didn't know the story and just commented. BUT! why would I respect them? Because they are also human like us. They might have taken the wrong path but I still believe that one day, the humanity will unite. We just have to be forgiving.
we’re not Christians because of a building, Jesus Himself was born in a manger
So you're saying you would never leave the Catholic faith because every church looks pretty?
Shouldn't it be the teachings that keep your faith strong and not the superficial things?
Wig
Others want to see a Islam inspired exhibit. I just want to see one inspired by Hinduism.
I wonder what if the theme was muslim, like you can wear hajj pilgrim them clothes, islamic creatures inspiration, holly person, the prophet theme, the guardian angel.
Mixed feelings, I thought this would be more historical. the whole concept of wearing a dress masquerading as a basilica is strange. A church is supposed to be the house of god right, so in making it a garment your making the statement that god lives here inside you. That's a powerful statement, but that's alot of pressure to behave accordingly. I also feel if any of the Doctors of the church could time travel to see this about half of them would try to burn these, the other half you think they are relics lol.
Beyonce Sasha Fierce dress
Lady Gaga should wear it.
Creepy... that's the word that comes to mind immediately! But then again, I've always found Catholic imagery creepy.
For me, extremely beatiful from all medieval art, italian renaissance, to italian, spanish, french (and other catholic states) baroque.
Still nothing beats the costumes Lady Gaga wore on Judas and Alejandro music videos
um, there's no "cult of mary"???? as a catholic I find lots of the fashion beautiful but the people who wore them were often anti God or religion.
Lou Baur yeah it’s def hypocrisy to the max, same old shit
Soni Ratusai ahahaha you're so wrong
Lou Baur, I was a devout Catholic but came out of her. You don't have to be anti God/Religion to be wrong. Clothing and symbols on them do carry alot of power to influence not only you but people and environment around you.
If you are a Catholic go and read about sister Faustina's and the Fatima Revelations of how the modern fashion will tip the cup of God's anger on mankind..
Our Lady said at Fatima "There are certain fashions that are offensive" and these are offensive.
tell that to the pope www.nytimes.com/2018/05/03/fashion/heavenly-bodies-met-gala-vatican.html
Could you please remove the bass in the vocals? It’s really bass heavy and makes the video sound amateurish when you obviously spent so much money on the video / editing of the project.
Those are terrifying maniquin.
Now I get why Kim k dress fit perfectly
The only part which I found disrespectful, is that they didn't have men mannequins for the priests vestments. Modernists have to learn not to project thier values.
Definitely art and gorgeous. Thank you Met and contributors.
Could the narrator be less hoity toity, in order to attract more to engage?
Just an observance.
Some beauty, lots of blatant sacrilege
The rodarte pieces can be removed, they don't do anything for the exhibit... also those pair of dresses are ugly as a first semester fashion student extravaganza.
the theme is offensive to Catholic believes
Not all pieces, D&G and Versace were absolutely horrendous, Balenciaga at least had a respectful approach.
Next year team should be world hunger and pollution
is it me or are bolton's ideas tacky and "safe"
Playing with the Sacred ...Blasphemy
Absolutely!!
wickedness in high fashion evil in high places the Devils church
This's Not Catholic imagination. There's No Fashion in Catholic.
Hiruthayaraj R true..they like to play catholic religion..that not good
It's. BEAUTIFUL ART..
NOT religion ...
Blindness of mind don't let them see BEAUTY
Meh, pretty tacky.
Just because Thom Browne is the boyfriend of curator Andrew Bolton doesn't mean that he deserved to be displayed in the exhibition . There are way more talented designers that should have been considered but were totally ignored. Nepotisim ! Shame on the Met !
There are so many triggered Christians in the comments.
unholy
that hurts that fashion is only for women; where is the equality???
Let’s trivialize Islam and Judaism next year.
I despise fashion inspired by holy art.
