  • The Met Fifth Avenue: Medieval, Byzantine, Lehman Galleries
Gallery views of The Costume Institute's spring 2018 exhibition, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, narrated by exhibition curator Andrew Bolton.
The Costume Institute's spring 2018 exhibition features a dialogue between fashion and medieval art from The Met collection to examine fashion's ongoing engagement with the devotional practices and traditions of Catholicism.
The Byzantine galleries at The Met Fifth Avenue focus on designers who were inspired by the interiors of Byzantine churches, while the Medieval and Lehman galleries feature designs inspired by the holy ordering of the Catholic Church.

They have amazing breath taking clothes in the exhibition. Unfortunately, the met gala red carpet was very underwhelming. A lot of the celebs missed the theme. The gala would have been more epic had the designers did more "catholic imagination" in their inspiration for the designs.

The best Costume Institute exhibit I have seen. The music, the vibe, the curation, and of course the fashion pieces made this such a remarkable exhibition. I will never forget walking through this.

The vatican approved showing in a museum type setting. Not the mocking of sacred vestments with the display of the Hollywood crowd spin on it. Try this with the muslims and other religions of the world and see if they can get away with it.

    • @billben7482

landdead26 Vatican didn’t support the event. They only lent the dresses to be exhibited in a separate place than normal dresses and only AFTER met gala decide to go with the theme. The met gala event don’t need Vatican’s approval / permission to go ahead with their Catholic theme.
And it’s not a new thing for museums to borrow ecclesiastical dresses to be exhibited, the met museum borrowed a bunch in the 60s becoming one of their most successful exhibition, few other museums have done the same. What artist wear is their CHOICE and unlike Rihanna, not everyone explicitly appropriate ecclesiastical dress.

Some priests thought approved the event. Just because a few priests that allowed for this sacrilige does not make it okay. If some of your friends jumped off a cliff would you do it too?

I am not Catholic anymore after being dismissed from this religion after getting a divorce from a man who almost killed me, so I really cannot comment after watching this video and reading all the comments. But I do believe a lot of work went into designing these costumes. Looking at each piece as a work of art without putting a brand name of a religion to it maybe would have went over a little better. I am happy to be a Christian with no label of religion. Very interesting display.

The authentic medieval clothing has a reverence and shows elevation of the mind beyond what is on earth, while the new fashion just makes the forms and colors look trashy. The juxtaposition is a great commentary on what we view as fashion and tasteless all the same.

The art and architecture and the people inspired by the Catholic church keep my faith strong. Why would I exchange the beauty and pageantry of the Catholic basilicas with the whitewashed boring walls of a protestant church?

Mixed feelings, I thought this would be more historical. the whole concept of wearing a dress masquerading as a basilica is strange. A church is supposed to be the house of god right, so in making it a garment your making the statement that god lives here inside you. That's a powerful statement, but that's alot of pressure to behave accordingly. I also feel if any of the Doctors of the church could time travel to see this about half of them would try to burn these, the other half you think they are relics lol.
