Both can be considered among the best amplification available due to many factors... but especially because they have to power to drive ANY speaker.

Nice. To my ears I preferred the SMc by a lot. I felt they had better transient attack, were less veiled and more dynamic than the Accuphase. And I preferred their bass, It was better defined. The Accuphase sounded a bit warm ad softer to me, but I was more engaged with the SMc. The Accuphase are beautiful though! Mark Knopfler cut was great! Thanks!

Nice review - well done! The other angle on "long term" reliability is to know that Accuphase has been in business longer than McCormick and is a larger business (more staff, departments, factory space) than McCormick. If a key person at Accuphase is no longer at the company I'm pretty confident that the business will continue on...
Good points, but Steve McCormack has been around for decades and doing upgrades to everything he's ever made. No customer of any product he's ever been involved with is left in the cold having to pay dealer and distributor markup again. Virtually every piece can be brought up to current standards or serviced by the actual man that designed it (or his long time assistant Patrick)... Not an unknown random support person that may or may not have lots of experience.
Also, if you are in the USA, it's serviced and shipped in the USA which is a huge deal nowadays with shipping costs and delays.
That's why I give the edge to the SMc Audio piece in that area although Accuphase will have a good resale market like McIntosh and should be reliable.
Both are successful, but have vastly different business models for marketing, distribution and customer support.
just imagine if one those ornaments dangling from that tree were to fall and strike Jason on the head...Jason, would have his 'Isaac Newton' moment...
Interesting video. I love what Steve and Patrick have been doing with their upgrades. My fully upgraded DNA 1 punches way above its price point. Do you know if these monoblocks have the gravity bass system installed too? I agree that the Accuphase sound a bit soft and veiled, which may work with bright speakers or rooms. At high volumes I did not like the Accuphase at all. As for looks, to paraphrase Fernando, it is better to sound good than to look good.
These don't have the gravity base. As you know, they can easily be upgraded and aesthetics changed too, but sound great as-is.
My friend has upgraded DNA1 like you although they are monos and use the new transformer post Plitron era. I'll have a video released soon featuring these that you may like.

Yeah...I have the gravity bases in mine and my friend Doug does too.
I will be featuring his DNA1 monos in an upcoming video. These blew away the McIntosh 501's he was using temporarily on his MBL 101e....look cool too with a unique EI core transformer sticking out with a hot-rod style hood. You'll probably like that video.
Great comparison thanks. Were you using their own preamps. Being a Mcormick on my mums side I would have to go with that brand, naturally.

Pretty harsh on the Accuphase, but I preferred the SMc Audio
