I worked on the Esso Northumbria when she was on the launching ways and when she was fitting out. She was not the first super-tanker as stated on the video as I had worked on the same size vessel in Amsterdam the year prior to the Esso launch. However the Dutch built and launched their ship in two halves and welded them together in the river Ij. NDSM shipyard now gone. I am now 76 and still remember with fondness and pride my time in British shipbuilding. PS At 76 to a 100 dollars a barrel the ship paid for itself in three trips!.

It was the world's first super tanker so with regards to the design what exactly did you expect, as for cutting corners that's wide of the mark the ship was built well with skilled workers and experienced shipbuilders, the fact that the ship operated for many years without major issues, please do your research correctly in future
