    That tells the respect that the Big 12 has among the CFP powers as well as the B1G and SEC, and the lack of respect that Jim Phillips and the ACC has in that power structure.

      I get that is how people cope with the fact the Big-12 is pathetic, to keep telling themselves it is somehow better than the ACC, but no. The conference isn't the issue, the free ride was used up by the big-12's expansion of garbage and the ACC is grabbing teams before losing them, which may be smart but doesn't evoke the sympathy like it did for the pathetic circumstances the big-12 found itself in.

      @vistatiger7493 Except... Cincy, UCF, and UH earned their invite to the P5 level by winning their conference and a NY6 bowl. SMU has never even sniffed a NY6 bowl victory. In fact, they couldn't win a conf title until UH, Cincy, and UCF left for the Big 12.
      So, let's not pretend that SMU is something more than they really are. If anything, they poisoned the ACC.

    Also there is no "slippery slope" here, this is just the powers-that-be attempting to stop the upward movement of FCS to FBS and G5 to P5/4.

    If the Power Conferences are making the barrier to entry even tougher, it might have been smart for SMU to take the hit to have a seat at the table. It may cost them a ton of money but it was probably either that or get relegated to the second tier forever. They might even be saving vs what it would cost to make the jump in the future. It's still a gamble with the shaky ground the ACC is on.

    The ACC should have never accepted SMU if it is not going to treat it as an equal partner. If SMU is successful it helps the ACC and gives it a stronger foothold in Texas.

    • @lorenzohaynes3886
      @lorenzohaynes3886 Рік тому +8

      SMU gives the ACC no foothold in Texas whatsoever. Texas kids that would've gone to FSU, Clemson, and Miami already do. SMU isn't changing anyone's mind. Now, on the other note..... SMU should've stayed where it was. Taking no money to get in the ACC was not something they should've agreed to. No money for 9 years is saying you're not valuable like the other schools in the conference. Lowrler revenue at first is one thing. Zero revenue for a decade is simply not respectable.

    • @benjaminhawkes6693
      @benjaminhawkes6693 Рік тому +5

      I have nothing against SMU but getting a foothold in Texas takes more than one tiny private school no matter how well they do. I'd still say they are more valuable than Wake Forest and BC.

    • @benjaminhawkes6693
      @benjaminhawkes6693 Рік тому +2

      @@lorenzohaynes3886 For the most part, I agree, but in recruiting it will help the ACC at least slightly. It isn't giving them huge inroads into tv markets (I imagine Texas cable providers will balk at having to pay the "in market" ACCN rate, especially outside dallas, though it is usually done by state) but having a team there gives kids a game there for the family to come to... it helps, it's not about quality of the team as far as athat is concerned (Stanford and Cal are the only regular partners though).

    • @devilfrawg4953
      @devilfrawg4953 Рік тому +1

      @benjaminhawkes6693 Wake Forest has done more in [pick one of the following: baseball, football, basketball] than SMU will ever accomplish in the ACC.

    • @benjaminhawkes6693
      @benjaminhawkes6693 Рік тому

      @@devilfrawg4953 Football, probably not. Wake has had 3 good seasons ever. That's not a hard bar. They (SMU) don't actually play baseball so that's some low hanging fruit. BB, probably but Wake isn't really any good at it anymore most years.
      As I try to tell Wake fans, it's not about success as such, its about viewership and brand. Those come with success only to a degree. Tiny private schools are unlikely to ever achieve sustained (as in still good outside of a good season) TV ratings or become a large brand. ND really is the only one. There are a few other mid-sized private schools (Miami, and Duke, Syracuse, though mostly in BB) and one massive private school that might as well be public (USC). You'll note two of those, as well as Pittburgh and Louisville are named after decent sized cities. Being able to identify with a city or having a city identify with you is important. Same goes for states on a larger scale. People identify with the larger flagship universities of the state, they often at least have family members that attended.
      I think that's why SMU tries to sell themselves as Dallas, but frankly they should change the name of the school, athletically, to Dallas maybe, otherwise I don't know if it is helping. I don't really know if it will ever succeed but clearly they are working on branding stuff.
      This issue of small schools being unlikely to become big brands applies to SMU too... but the value of SMU to the ACC is their TV market, and state. Even a minor inroad into Texas is worth more, unsurprisingly (and I emphasize: TO THE ACC) than a 4th brand in North Carolina (and probably the 5th overall behind ECU).

    I look at this with a slightly different take. I think the CFP committee asked themselves a question regarding all of the schools that have recently come up from G5 to P4/5. Are you a full share member of the conference you just joined? Houston, UCF, BYU and Cincinnati are. SMU is not. That made the decision rather them. As many have said, buying your way in has more hidden consequences than SMU realizes.

    I'm a fan of a BIG XII School (Former SWC School), and do not feel one bit bad or sad for SMU about the Death Penalty they received so long ago and now that their little ploy to buy their way back into a power conference will likely blow up in their face. SMU thought at one point they could buy players with no repercussions and now think they can buy a spot in a power conference without repercussions. Anyone seeing a common denominator here? People in the SMU community think they're so much smarter than everyone else, but they keep repeating the same mistakes. Reap what you sow SMU.

      The only reason SMU got the death penalty is because they were the only school the NCAA could get away with giving the death penalty to. Every Texas school in the South Western Conference was doing it and that is why Arkansas left. Whatever school you root for was most definitely paying their players. You are a hypocrite.

    SMU would be a great addition to the B12. They have a proud athletic tradition. The death penalty could have been applied to any number of programs in those days. Politics, they lost that battle.

    • @nickmoutos8308

      SMU would be a HORRIBLE addition to the BIG XII in just about every conceivable way. The BIG XII has plenty of Texas teams already, covering the largest markets in Texas and DOES NOT need another Texas school. To add another school from Texas to the BIG XII would dilute the talent base from the state as well as diluting the the relative equality among current BIG XII members. I do not believe SMU has the talent base or fan base to compete with the current 14 and soon-to-be 16 member schools.
