I literally stumbled onto this technique (through trial and error) at the range today. The more I tried to swing from the inside towards the right (I’m a right hander), the better I hit it. I also tried to keep my swing more shallow so I wasn’t losing so much energy due to steepness. I wanted the energy to really be into the back of the ball. Really enjoyed your video!
Thank you Marcus for great advice. I remember one coach i had who always said "You have to turn your hips more" that was the answer to all bad shots "Turn you hips more, and much more". Now t am very good doing a Hula - Hula dance. I have tried many instructurs and no one explain the swing as good as you doo.
Man! What an epiphany! Talk about hitting the proverbial nail on the head, this is exactly where I have been and worked so hard to correct for so long. Thank you for your valuable insight and priceless instruction Marcus......
Happy New Year Marcus...always a pleasure watching and hearing you. Today I showed my 33 yo son this video and he liked it...he' is a "long" non trained golfer. (Moe aware person) and hits my (single length) 8 iron over 160m - unfortunately not that consistent. He now understands your info...thanks heaps.
Best drill in golf history. You can't hit the ball at all without perfect arm structure, and can't play decent golf without it. Only way to feel it, thanks Marcus.
Really good drills and mental advice. What the mind can conceive the body can achieve. I had that saying posted up on a wall in my swing analyzer bay. Thanks Marcus.
I understand. 😂 For the first time I understand the difference between over the top and inside. Thanks for the first drill. It made my brain understand. 👏
Marcus can't thank you enough. God Bless. One question, I keep hitting up on the driver, but popping it up or hitting the tee out from under the ball. I have watched the videos but something is still going wrong.
Then I am sorry to say that you are not hitting enough up on the ball. The lowest point of the swing is to close to the ball. We need an earlier release to ensure that we get the driver head to move up enough before impact.
I like the over exaggeration strategy as it really helps understand those extremes, at least that works for me. And drill I love is working backwards, reverse engineer the impact position, this has greatly helped me understand where I should be. I set up with the optimal impact position and then do pitch shots engraining that feeling, plus finding the center of the face. Again works for me, but may work for others too.
Exactly! We improve learning from our mistakes. I'm glad you brought up Moe 'cause just a few weeks after I started learning golf, in Dec '95 I bought this magazine it had an special article about Moe and I got hooked, so I started learning the game and the swing on myself (I've never had a lesson) until I hit it decent, and from there on that's all I've included to develop my own way and a few people have told me "You surely know how to bundle them," but I knew that, hehe 😁 Well, in Sep.'23 I started with a small glitch I tried to correct and I did, but in between, I did a move that felt different which gave me very good results on approach shots too, even when I was bending my trail arm on the back swing with a more upright stance---thing I never did before---then I lost it and went mad to the point I started hitting it everywheres but straight! so just went to my old ways and that was it. Coming fall last year I heard of this Viking that wasn't Stenson (one of my faves) but had the type of swing-feel I lost, so I checked and there you was showing me I was doing the right way with the wrong sequence as you mention here, LOL and right away I went took some video of me and sure enough, I was coming slightly over the top thinking I wasn't. From the first corrected swings after that I caught the feeling back and that's all I've been doing since, thanks! I noticed your shaft back at impact is very close to your starting club angle and also your back heel stays almost on the ground through impact, hence your great stability no matter the arm bending. That's why I liked it, 'cause it seems like effortless and although it's your own swing, it's not so different to Moe's philosophy. Now I'm in between and it's started working for me already distance-accuracy wise, so I'm happy! 👍
Fantastic drills Marcus and so pleased your back and doing these amazing videos! Been following your for quite a long time , but something struck me when at the end of the last drill you said early release? Can you explain or share video link. I can come from inside no problem , but tend to push to right a lot when I do. Thanks.
Great lesson….you have to understand both sides of the argument and that is what it feels like at times with a golf swing to get to the answer… you nailed it that time Marcus I believe to stop swinging over the top you have to be in control of your actions of the mechanics and you have to be in control of your body also and not just be numb For instance…I’ve been struggling with putting as of late so I designated my practice day to just finding a way to get somewhat better …and I did I use a 42 inch putter with a Tear Drop head and with it I locked it to my right arm…strong side … and started 1 arm putting and wow what a experience that was So I took it out on the course … my %’s of make more putts went up during 18 holes and a feeling of one arm being in control was fantastic That opened a door to thinking can I cary this thought feeling over to my full swings with all my clubs and short game to I played another 9 holes with that thinking and during my shots that my right and only my right arm is carrying the load My pre shot routine is now…take the clubs in my right and swing it on my swing path to my target as I’m looking at my shot and not down at the ball…the mind is feeling and seeing what I want Another words….I’m in control of what’s going on and with just 1 arm as the controller my task at hand is so much more easier The rest of the body follows the leader much more naturally now instead of me thinking and trying to manipulate all that I found out both sides as you mentioned here…for my putting problems and that opened up more opportunities Take control and you’ll be in control You are so correct Marcus 👍⛳️👍
I don't think we need to think about that. If we move our arms correct our body will turn and you will end up with the back to the target. If we find a good top position we don't need more turn.
My swing in slow motion will not help. We don't have the same release point unless we are exactly built the same and swing with the same speed. Let the ball guide you to a good timing. 👍
When I started practicing golf I was told I was casting the club when I used my arms. Probably never hit it better. Then x-factor and whatnot got in the way and downhill from there.
Hi Marcus - I like that 2nd drill and without hitting a ball my "brain" is already accepting that drop with my arms adding speed. Many thanks and I will try it tomorrow in the garden.
Hi Marcus - great to see you back here! You might have answered this question before but do you have any thoughts about bending your lead arm in the backswing and also going past 90 degrees at the top of the backswing? It looks like you don’t care about this. Most coaches suggest folding the elbows is a death move. Thanks!
I hear that to. 😊 But I only need to hit a shot or two before the naysayer becomes interested in how it can work. I think a relaxed lead arm is much more important than a straight arm. In this video I explain more: ua-cam.com/video/naUkRgytBW0/v-deo.htmlsi=PPm4S-ol0VlqpYvp
Marcus, that are very good drills. I need to try them in my next training session. There also is the opposite drill facing the back to the target. What is the purpose in comparision to facing the chest to the target as in your drill? Thanks!
Facing the target teaches you to swing forward in relationship to your body and that will always result in an inside out path. If you hitt balls with your back to the target you learn to swing over the top in relationship to the body, I never will recommend that.
Marcus, glad you are well. Welcome back. You've probably mentioned it, but what would you say your grip pressure is? I always feel it tighten up on the downswing.
I do grip it firmly, especially with the index finger on my lead hand. I think we should aim for a very firm grip and learn to keep our wrists moving and flexible.
Hi Marcus. That first drill is money! But...doesn't swinging from the inside rely heavily on timing with rotation of the arms? Also, at what point does the rotation part kick in? Thank you as always.
The timing required is always the same. If we focus on bringing the club to the ball we don't need to think about rotation, it will happen. We need to focus on how we want the club to approach and impact the ball. 😊
I played in a 40 golfer tournament that a 89 year old won. I didn't ask him for any tips as he was clearly swinging in to out. This is the secret to good golf.
I think i am like Viking. I can do it facing front. I can do it facing back. I can do it on one leg back but for real i get way to steep. Sort of out then down lead with shoulders. Maybe his heck with target will work
There are two golfers that teach hitting straight. Dalton Mc Cary and probably the best unknown golf instructor ever Joe Norwood he found Southern California golf association and was taught by Vardon. Little to no shoulder rotation sound familiar. He was known as the pro's pro because he fixed so many tour pros in his day. Sadly Mr. Norwood is gone now. See I think to much.
If that is the only problem. Try to direct the push of the trail hand more down towards the ground and hit many practice shots when you focus more on the ground than the ball.
Hi Marcus my driver spin consistently comes up around 4800 on the trackman, clubhead speed 100 mph and ball speed 135 , yardage barely reaches 220! Help
@@gogga26 I ask because Trackman is not good indoors. When you have a very low smash factor and high spin there are mostly a of center impact or a bad release that's giving you the problems. Are you hitting fade or draw?

Great lesson….you have to understand both sides of the argument and that is what it feels like at times with a golf swing to get to the answer… you nailed it that time Marcus
I believe to stop swinging over the top you have to be in control of your actions of the mechanics and you have to be in control of your body also and not just be numb
For instance…I’ve been struggling with putting as of late so I designated my practice day to just finding a way to get somewhat better …and I did
I use a 42 inch putter with a Tear Drop head and with it I locked it to my right arm…strong side … and started 1 arm putting and wow what a experience that was
So I took it out on the course … my %’s of make more putts went up during 18 holes and a feeling of one arm being in control was fantastic
That opened a door to thinking can I cary this thought feeling over to my full swings with all my clubs and short game to
I played another 9 holes with that thinking and during my shots that my right and only my right arm is carrying the load
My pre shot routine is now…take the clubs in my right and swing it on my swing path to my target as I’m looking at my shot and not down at the ball…the mind is feeling and seeing what I want
Another words….I’m in control of what’s going on and with just 1 arm as the controller my task at hand is so much more easier
The rest of the body follows the leader much more naturally now instead of me thinking and trying to manipulate all that
I found out both sides as you mentioned here…for my putting problems and that opened up more opportunities
Take control and you’ll be in control
You are so correct Marcus
👍⛳️👍
Great comment. We are responsible and we need to be in control. Great job my friend. 👍
Hi Marcus, I wish you e ver 0:42 y good new year. What do you think of " turn your shoulders to the target" in the back swing?
I don't think we need to think about that. If we move our arms correct our body will turn and you will end up with the back to the target. If we find a good top position we don't need more turn.
Great drills. However I struggle with release point. If you showed your swing in slo mo, it may help me. Thanks
