    I appreciate the explanation for why it needs to be washed like this. Most other videos on this topic are just ‘how-to’ without ‘why’

    Great video señor. I will usually wash my down gear in a large plastic tub and let these items soak in tech wash for about 15 mins. Then I rinse the garments in a front loader using a rinse only cycle (x3) and very low spin. When I dry, I’ll use 4-5 pairs of rolled up socks instead of tennis balls alternating between air only and very low settings. Usually 5-6 full cycles for my sleeping bag and several rounds of hand picking the persistent down clumps. I will also place stuff outside for about 15-20 mins in the sun to really help insure the down is totally dry. Thanks for all your awesome winter outing tips. 🙌

    Perfect information. Thanks you for this video. I'm set for life. Down is very expensive. Just subscribed.

    Will the same method work for primaloft (synthetic Down) products?

    Do you need to add more than 2 tennis balls when drying a sleeping bag?

    Can also use tennis shoes if you don't have any balls. Something like converse would do.

      I've never tried that but I can see how it would work!

    That’s not a down jacket

    What if you don’t have a separate dryer?

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  2 роки тому +1

      I'd take it to a laundry facility, just make sure to use low/no heat as those places can really blast the heat.

      Most of mine say do not tumble dry.
      I'm going to wait until summer so they can air dry outdoors in the sun.

    I Ruined my coat because I didn't know you couldn't use agitator washer. The dry cleaners ruined one of one.

  • @raregear
    @raregear 2 роки тому

    No detergent ( nick wax hydrophobic) ( downwax wash only)
    Dont use agitator
    Clean washer from detergent
    Close zippers
    Cold water, delicate rinse
    Add tennis ball to knock of the jacket to retain original loft
    Dry without heat
    3 drying cycle

    Can I sun dry it after a spin cycle?

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  2 роки тому +1

      I don't recommend that. The tumbling helps keep the down from clumping and losing insulation.

    First, I don't think that's a down jacket. It looks consistently flat, like a synthetic. Also, from my experience washing all of my down jackets in a top-loading washer, you will need to make sure the jacket was actually submerged in water after the washer is filled with water. A lot of jackets have really good DWR so the jacket may not be submerged. They will also recommend you wash the jacket multiple times and use a product to refresh the DWR.

      I just a very old and worn out down jacket. But it's definitely down! And yes, great tip on the submerging the jacket!

      Yes, all Nikwax products have handwash instructions right on the bottle. You can use a bucket, the sink or your bathtub!

    Anyone here with a Patagonia Micro Puff Jacket? Is this how you wash that? Thanks

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  3 роки тому

      Hi! Yes, this would work on the Micro Puff. Only thing I'd change is get the jacket fully wet before adding the down detergent.

    • @thdjjfsfh
      @thdjjfsfh 3 роки тому

      The micro puff is not a down jacket. It's synthetic.

    Confusing. Discuss and make clear the detergents first. Seeing these hardly identifiable bottles from a distance that makes them illegible is frustrating AF.
