I love how Napalm collects all these weird bands, like Gloryhammer. Oddly I found them throught a recommendation at the end of Wind Roses "Diggy Diggy Hole". A Minecraft song covered by a dwarf metal band. Thanks Napalm
I think most people found them this way. I stopped listening to Wind Roses soon after, because how am I going to take them seriously with those pompous lyrics and plastic props. They lack everything that makes Gloryhammer good.
Exactly the same. If you go to Wind Rose's Diggy Diggy Hole video, at the end it recommends "Hootsforce". At first I thought it was just weird and silly, but then I started to listen to the other songs, and then the storyline of each album... Now I'm hooked for life! HAIL HOOTS!
Sabaton is another good gateway metal band. They cover historical events mostly battles and wars but they also cover stuff like the "Livgardet", the end of the swedish empire, acts of heroism, and great tragedies. They also have some pretty solid musical flow to them and are not at all harsh in tone. My personal favorite example of this is Long Live the King.

Beast in Black is another great way to start your journey into metal. They are extremely catchy with a crapton of 80s disco and synthwave vibes, but also hardcore af!
Gloryhammer is absolutely amazing and no one can ever possibly convince me of anything less than that. But also I absolutely take this ginormous dnd campaign seriously. I am far too invested in the storyline to the point where I have actually cried during the finales (you can imagine which one but I don’t wanna spoil for those who haven’t listened). They may not take the songs to seriously but you can tell that they love bringing these things to their fans. You can tell the amount of effort it took them and how they’re willing to constantly go above and beyond to create these things. And that’s not even mentioning their skill on their instruments. Tbh I take this series about as serious as watching the iron man series or captain America. Somehow these nutjobs have taken over my heart and honestly, that’s fine by me
Right there with you. I've only discovered them a few weeks ago via The Charismatic Voice and I am by no means familiar with the lore, let alone how the story goes. But while the entire premise may be cheesy af, the love and joy they bring to what they do is real. And that's what makes them so great. None of this would work if they weren't great musicians, either.
Yeah I feel less alone to see I'm not the only one taking the story and the lyrics completely seriously :') I'm a bit new to gloryhammer, so what do you mean by "the finale" ?
@@secretlyaspacewizzard Well, their albums have a storyline and the last song is generally an epic battle which translates to like the third act of a play with high stakes and big decision.. The moment of truth where either evil or good prevails. the finale I'm talking about was the one from the legends beyond the galactic terrorvortex album, so that would be the last song on the album: The fires of ancient cosmic destiny :)
Soon after I discovered Gloryhammer due to my love of Alestorm, it quickly became my favorite band. I love the music. I love the epic power metal and the symphony. But most of all I love the lore and story. I actually like to take the lore seriously and get into the story while I’m listening. It’s so fun and amazing

How did the ridiculous lyrics section not include the whole “inside a chamber of cryogenetical fire a magical wizard is doing a spell” part?? That has to be their best work of all!
Me too! I was sold the first time I saw that ridiculous closeup of Angus saying Oh yeah! while flying through space. And I love that he finally got to ride his laser-shooting dinosaur.
Literally, I discovered Gloryhammer in the beginning of the last year and love it, I hear more bands from many genres of metal and rock but the style and elegance of Gloryhammer nobody has it.
After Dragonforce and Rhapsody, Gloryhammer was the first metal band I got into. I think their story telling is among the best as well, it clear early on what the story is about throu out their songs.
Symphonic version of "Legends from Beyond the Galactic Terrorvortex" is just a soundtrack to the epic movie you just watched in your imagination. Also, "Italian Folk Metal" is a perfect album for any Gloryhammer fan, with such lyrics as "upgrade mufflon with granade launcher" to defend natural beauty of Sardinia from rider of Ryanair; "always ready for adventure and for crusty bread crust" when praising mascot of popular fish stick manufacturer and let's not forget about the staple of Valentina's local cousine, Polenta Taragna, "a platter of steaming-hot awesomeness forged by Thor's ladle" and "a pride of Valhaltelina's couldrons".
I discovered Gloryhammer through a friend recommending me a song called Rise of the Chaos Wizards and I thought "oh this has to be good" and well here I am matching my Gloryhammer shirts with my friends.
I got to talk with Angus Mc Fife and he told me that the original name intended was not Gloryhammer, but Gloryh0l3. I am not joking, it is a legitimate fact.

A great review for anyone who’s new to Gloryhammer or metal in general! I love the deliberate bad grammar thing. Bowes is a native English speaker, so what I think he’s doing here is affectionately making fun of of how most symphonic power metal is made by European bands whose English isn’t perfect. Fun fact: The “chivistic rainbow” line is a joke in reference to Rhapsody of Fire, who Gloryhammer take a lot of inspiration from and regularly make fun of. “Chivistic” is a made up word (which may or may not mean “like a chive”) that comes from mishearing the lyric “shy mystic rainbow” from Rhapsody’s song Steelgods of the Last Apocalypse. Bowes casually mentioned mishearing the lyric on twitter, and then later went and included it in a Gloryhammer song. It’s these little things that make Gloryhammer so much fun!
Power/symphonic metal in itself is a perfect gateway for beginners, because the clean vocals, catchy melody and upbeat sound make it an easier transition to your ears. What an absolutely phenomenal video! One of my all-time favorite bands, easily. The story is so captivating, I've heard every song countless times. 2:12 I actually sent this song to my Aunt like an hour ago. Rise of the Chaos Wizards is definitely a good gateway song into gloryhammer for people who don’t like metal
I remember sitting in my grade 10 english class, working on a project while listening to google play music on random shuffle. It tossed in Magic Dragon into the mix, and I ended up listening to it for like 3 hours straight, before listening to the rest of the songs. Imagine my surprise when they dropped Space 1992: Rise of the Chaos Wizards, my elation at Tales from Beyond the Galactic Terrorvortex, and my continued joy all these years later with Return to the Kingdom of Fife. By far my favourite band of all time.
Wow really well done, down to earth review on this band. I never thought of Gloryhammer being a "gateway into metal" before, but it definitely has been for me. Thanks for making this
I've been a casual metal listener for most of my life and I found Gloryhammer to be a breath of fresh air. I had been looking for a new band to listen to for some time but nothing really appealed to what I was looking for. At first I thought that the band was too silly to fit the bill for me but it turned out to be exactly what I was looking for without me knowing it. The ridiculous tone is great because it's parody without being condescending and I like that they're just telling a fun story and not trying to send some sort of message. Of course this wouldn't matter if these guys weren't good musicians and they most certainly are. The added bonus is that my teenage son is hooked on them now as well. He never really cared about music much at all until I bought the three Gloryhammer albums and now , listening to them is a fun thing we do together
Have to say this has been in my recommended for a while now and was never really bothered about clicking it but man that was actually really well made and put together - basically, sorry it took me so long to click on this - super awesome video I'm a huge fan of heavier stuff like the clip of Amon Amarth was awesome but do like flying through space most of the time if I need some peace from all the banging and actually being able to understand lyrics - again super well-made video loved it!
Was already a Gloryhammer fan but for some reason the fact that LFBTGT had symphonics arranges completely went over my head, so thank you for pointing that out. Nice vid also.
All of Gloryhammer's songs have symphonic arrangements, even the first album. It just became more apparent when they released the first symphonics with the deluxe version of S1992:ROTCW (what an acronym btw). I sometimes prefer just listening to the symphonics. I especially love symphonic Legend of the Astral Hammer. It's just so heroic!
Liquid dust is a beautiful, poetic, perfect way to describe how Zargothrax turned into dust... Don't you dare belittle the sacrifice of Angus Mc'Fife! ;P
Literally one of the characters is a Cyborg Barbarian ripoff of Arnold Schwarzeneggar's Conan the Barbarian who became King of California and a movie star, then self-destructed his neutron star-powered heart to prevent a portal from opening, tearing open a wormhole to another dimension, in the process merging with the fabric of that alternate reality to become a god before literally dropping from the sky during the climactic fight to drop a Macho Man Randy Savage-worthy pro wrestling promo before laser blasting a wizard into liquid dust. I fucking LOVE this band.
Kingz thank you, future vids that aren’t school projects will still be filmed on my phone and wonts have scripts lol. but this is what my vids are like when i put effort in :)
Seeing this video after the new album DEFINITELY has me changing the favorite lines I've heard... I mean... how can it stay the same when we now have bangers like: "Goblins! Agents of Doom Masters of Evil that come from the moon Robots! Servants of steel Their lasers so real you shall feel Wizard! Frozen in tomb His nuclear clone made Dundee go Kaboom" "Toxic dragons fly across a wasteland made from nuclear war" "By the blood of the sword inmy veins, I will never be defeat! For the eternal glory of Dundee!" And last but not least And really... the most important one of all "🎸🎸 DOUBLE! 🎸🎸 WIZARD!"
Wow this video is obscenely underrated. Do you ever plan on doing any other commentaries like this? I would watch them....your delivery is really well done. I was expecting a huge channel with the production values put forth here.
another great metal band in a similar style but more serious in their storytelling is Unleash the Archers. great band, their overall story they tell is far more on the serious side, but the band itself is fairly goofy and lighthearted with some of their music videos being about their epic tale, and some being about them going to a track and having a footrace.
Sometimes you just gotta have fun with metal. It's such a versatile genre and it doesn't always have to be serious or dark and depressing. It can be light hearted, emotional, uplifting and while it is a powerful tool to make a statement or address some really deep issues, personal or global, sometimes its fun to hear songs about drunk pirates and Space Dundee.
Power metal tends to be one of the most accessible subgenres. Jumping straight into symphonic blackened death doom is like jumping straight into Trout Mask when you're just finding Beefheart. A good band to listen to to get into more serious, less comedic metal would be Opeth. Personally I have to recommend listening to "Still Life" from front to back.
Yes Gloryhammer is a glorius gateway in too the Cosmic Horror of Metal like Blind Guardian or Sabaton and even when you are one the deepest layers of the Metalhell this Bands will welcom you with open arms
I love how your example of Standard Metal is Twilight of the Thunder God. I mean, that's totally fair I just love that was your choice. My bet was on Raining Blood.
I've been meaning to find a good video to show people why Gloryhammer is awesome and stands out from everything else in metal music, even thought about making one myself. But I guess I'll just use this one :D Great job, the video is very well written and edited, hope you got an A!
It was a great summary of this seemingly tiny part of the huge topic of metal. Good job! ps.: this is one of the most hilarious lines... i think...: 'Long ago in the distant future, (they were a force for the light) / But now in the ancient times, (they slaughter peasants by night)'
I listen to metal and to classical music for 20 years and when I heard GH for the first time I just could not stop laughing. I said this has to be a parody.
Randomly popped up in recommended. I liked your explanation. My favourite band is Gloryhammer, and only listen to bands similar to them(you know, fantasy symphonic P.M.). Chris is brilliant in this matter. Thx for making the video, I quite enjoyid it!
@@hopegoble8539 ok then, u have to check out Twilight Force or Bloodbound(their newer stuff). Both have fantasy lyrics, both have good melodies etc, especially Twilight Force. Make sure to update me wether u like them or not!
Somewhat amusing to me is that you wrote this for an english class, when I did the exact same thing for my public speaking class. The main difference is that I come from the opposite origin, I have been a metalhead since long before this band, but have nonetheless come to adore them all the same. Also I notice the Startrek DVDs off to the side, I have the exact same box set. Good taste.
They are so silly but awesome, skilled and fun and not afraid to tell you how dorky they are. Both sides GloryHammer & Alestorm. I'm also a big fan of nanowar of steel
Gloryhammer was founded by Christopher Bowes i believe, so possibly you might like Alestorm as well? If any of you like Gloryhammer, you might also like other powermetal bands like Powerwolf, Sabaton, Rhapsody of Fire, Stratovarius, early Sonata Arctica, Wind Rose, Orden Ogan, etc.
I love this. Thank you so much for this! Have you by any chance heard Devin Townsend's live-set in Plovdiv? He has an entire symphonic orchestra there with him and it is incredible. If so, I'd love to hear your take on it; if not, this is a big, big recommendation. Hope You're doing good and are healthy. :)
An excellent and insightful video on Gloryhammer. However, I would also recommend Rhapsody of Fire (formerly just Rhapsody), particularly their discography from 1997 to 2002, Twilight Force, Fairyland's Of Wars in Osyhria, Marius Danielsen's Legend of Valley Doom as gateways to fantasy symphonic power metal. I also recommend Stratovarius, Freedom Call, DragonForce, Sabaton and Axel Rudi Pell as gateways to power metal in general. 😉
Nice video. You got an A, right? My gateway to metal was hard rock. However, today I would suggest Nightwish if you are already into music that's a little more complicated than the usual 3min pop song.
To sum up Gloryhammer it’s basically a DND campaign where the DM literally just gave up in trying to control anything at all
yeah thats about it
I wouldn't even say it that way
It's a DND campain, where the DM just smoked some stuff and the entire party went with it
"Hey, DM, I know I'm one of the players, but can I also be the main villain?"
"Well, you're in Alestorm, so sure."
true
Oh, no. It's where the DM just keeps jumping further than the players.
TLDR: S tier shitposting and that's why everybody loves them

"Flying high into space to charge my laser-powered goblin smasher".
For me it was "fireballs make everyone die" that got me.
For me it was: Ralatho fires his final defence, Missiles of nuclear justice. Beautiful XD
It was the opening line for me: 'The Unicorn Invasion of Dundee'. I just cracked up laughing and have loved them ever since. They are pure silliness.

"goblin king of the darkstorm galaxy ride of the wings of doom"
Going to share this around to my friends, it's a great explanation of why a lot of people find Gloryhammer so fascinating.
thanks! let me know if they like the video and the band :)
Your presentation skills are top notch. Enjoyed that.
This is awesome. Great job
When I say metal, probably a lot of people imagine this: Plays AmonAmarch A.K.A. the Sabbaton of Viking gods history. You just won a subscriber XD
As a big Gloryhammer fan, I love this detailed look at the band and why their music works so well. I'd love to see more music reviews!
Don't you dare belittle the sacrifice of Angus Mc'Fife! ;P
The thirteenth of his name, mind you.
Also, it’s a hair styling product for volume, apparently. At least that’s what I found on german google
I fucking LOVE this band.
love this new style looks super nice
Kingz thank you, future vids that aren’t school projects will still be filmed on my phone and wonts have scripts lol. but this is what my vids are like when i put effort in :)
@@hopegoble8539 i see its quite nice either way:) very well done :)
Unicorn invasions is no laughing matter.
Seeing this video after the new album DEFINITELY has me changing the favorite lines I've heard... I mean... how can it stay the same when we now have bangers like:
"Goblins! Agents of Doom
Masters of Evil that come from the moon
Robots! Servants of steel
Their lasers so real you shall feel
Wizard! Frozen in tomb
His nuclear clone made Dundee go Kaboom"
"Toxic dragons fly across a wasteland made from nuclear war"
"By the blood of the sword inmy veins, I will never be defeat! For the eternal glory of Dundee!"
And last but not least
And really... the most important one of all
"🎸🎸
DOUBLE!
🎸🎸
WIZARD!"
FROM THE HEAVENS
COMES A HERO
MIGHTY HOOTSMAN
edit: great review
HOOTUS DEI!
I remember my first love just like I remember the first time I heard this song. I will never forget! THE HOOTSMAN HAS ARRIVED!!!
This part of the song makes me want to be there. Epic music is epic.
DOUBLE, WIZARD!
HELL YEAH
Great presentation!
A very interesting video. It's cool to hear a different perspective on metal.
Yes Gloryhammer is a glorius gateway in too the Cosmic Horror of Metal like Blind Guardian or Sabaton and even when you are one the deepest layers of the Metalhell this Bands will welcom you with open arms
Gloryhammer is the orchestral section that Wagner forgot to use
Gloryhammer was also my gateway metal band and the first one I show anyone interested in the genre. Thanks for the great video!
I discovered gloryhammer from listening to alestorm. And had the pleasure of seeing them live supporting alestorm.. They put on a cracking show too.
Excellent analysis. That's why I enrolled into the hootforce
You have a soothing voice, talking in stuff like this seems fitting
I love how your example of Standard Metal is Twilight of the Thunder God. I mean, that's totally fair I just love that was your choice. My bet was on Raining Blood.
I love Gloryhammer, but i also like amon amarth...
All in all fantastic video!
TWILIGHT
OOOF
THE THUNDERGOOOD
P.S. you should check the band "Twilight Force". They're fun.
I've been meaning to find a good video to show people why Gloryhammer is awesome and stands out from everything else in metal music, even thought about making one myself. But I guess I'll just use this one :D Great job, the video is very well written and edited, hope you got an A!
FOR DUNDEE!
Great, informative video. What got me into metal was guitar hero and Helloween xD
It was a great summary of this seemingly tiny part of the huge topic of metal. Good job!
ps.: this is one of the most hilarious lines... i think...: 'Long ago in the distant future, (they were a force for the light) / But now in the ancient times, (they slaughter peasants by night)'
Great job!
Thx for making the video, I quite enjoyid it!
thanks! if you have any recommendations let me know, I'm always looking for new PM bands!
Good taste.
That symphonic version should be a film soundtrack!
And all that before anyone ever thought to add basket weaving to the story.
They are so silly but awesome, skilled and fun and not afraid to tell you how dorky they are. Both sides GloryHammer & Alestorm. I'm also a big fan of nanowar of steel
You have proven yourself to be mighty indeed.
I always assumed liquid dust meant like particles.
Fantasy Symphonic Power Metal... or in other words: Power Metal.
Thoughts on the new album that just came out?
DOUBLE! WIZARD!
Was introduced to Glory Hammer through Valhallaluya by Nanowar of Steel
I love this. Thank you so much for this! Have you by any chance heard Devin Townsend's live-set in Plovdiv? He has an entire symphonic orchestra there with him and it is incredible. If so, I'd love to hear your take on it; if not, this is a big, big recommendation. Hope You're doing good and are healthy. :)
As a full blood metal head these guys just make great to listen to music napalm records has the best collection of artist's
Another W for Christopher Bowes
