I am Brazilian and here in Brazil we speak Portuguese. And the word for "God" in Portuguese is called "Deus"... I've always found interesting a game have written Deus Ex ... The capitalized form of the word Deus as the diminutive, symbolizing gods, deities generally originates from the term Latin for Deus, divinity or deity. Portuguese is the only neo-Latin Romance language that kept the term in its original form with the end of the noun in "us", unlike the Spanish "Dios", French "Dieu", Italian "Dio" and Romanian, a language that distinguishes "Dumnezeu", creator monotheistic and "Zeu", It is idolized. I really like the Deus Ex franchise and found interesting in this game have a word for other current languages sounds like something from another world, and the Portuguese-speaking is something so normal.

2:00 This explanation is basically correct. It is "derived" in some sense from Greek, but the words, themselves, are actually Latin. I think most people will come to believe, from what he says, that the words are Greek, if they don't know better. I think he could have been much clearer in explaining it, to avoid this confusion. Also, unless something has changed recently, people aren't entirely sure how Latin was pronounced, when it was actually spoken by commoners in the Roman empire. It was so long ago -- centuries (a millennium?) before the invention of sound recording and playback. So, the best that people of today have to go off of, for understanding how the words were pronounced, are things like rhyme in poetry. But the current academic pronunciation is, indeed, "day-us ex [mak-ee-nuh]", unless something has changed, since I took Latin in the early 2000's.

Warren Spector already answered to the question "why is the game named Deus Ex" and it's a direct reference to the idea of creating your own god with technology (god from the machine), the Helios ending of DX1. Also, this ending seems to come out of nowhere.

The phrase comes from ancient Greek, when it referred to the flying gods who appeared in the ancient drama plays, played throughout theaters in ancient Greece. Indeed it signified the intervention, when it was least expected, that would save the protagonists from their ordeal. This phrase was taken by the romans and the phrase here is latin (deus ex machina), not greek, but it has the exact same meaning. The ancient Greek phrase is still widely used, unchanged, in modern Greek.

The Deus Ex Machina actually rescued many moments from TV series.
Whenever I think "Well that was obvious, why did the protagonist survive?" I remind myself of the Deus Ex Machina and that this already was a thing in ancient Greece. So that's a thing.

  • @kayeplaguedoc9054

I didn't know it was that hard to pronounce until I heard Mack call it "Doos ex" over and over without a hint of irony. Although I do know sometimes people would mishear it. I remember freaking out a teenagers parents once because they thought I was talking about a game called "Day of sex."
And I'd say the reasoning for the game being called Deus Ex was pretty clear. You're character is a Deus Ex machina within the story and the plots in the games take the idea of a "God out of a Machine" quite literally what with Hyron and Helios and all that.

A few things I know on this subject:
    1. It's a fact that Warren Spector's original intention behind the title was a riff against most video-game stories at the time, basically saying they rely on poor storytelling tropes and his game Deus Ex (2000) was attempting to subvert that.
    2. Just to be clear, while the phrase originated from ancient Greece, "apò mēkhanês theós", the words "Deus Ex Machina" are Latin, from ancient Rome.
    3. I guess Spector ditched "Machine" to make it a clean and simple title for a game series, so it's just: "Deus Ex". So, the game series we all know and love is actually called: "From God."

You got something wrong in your explanation. Deus ex machina only applies to situations that are not predetermined. The person or event that creates the solution must be random or unexpected.
i.e. The floor breaks and the villain falls to his death = deus ex machina.
A character who is left for dead (but not killed) and comes back to save the day at the last second = not deus ex machina. This is instead called a "successful plot twist" because we can expect that the character being left alive has a chance to return later in the story.

Isn't Adam (named after a Bible character, hmmmm) supposed to be the guy who miraculously saves the world, thereby eventuating a Deus Ex Machina? I'd be disappointed if that wasn't the case. Even in Mankind Divided he says "I thought I could save the world. Now look at it." so he does want to save the world, that being his end goal. I think defeating the Illuminati or at least compelling them to do good would be the Deus Ex Machina and thus the end of the game.
I really really hope the series doesn't end here, Square Enix cannot do this to us.
Mankind Divided had glorious gameplay and a phenomenal sountrack. Feeding us bits and pieces of the story was just cruel.
